Tasek Lama Recreational Park (Malay : Taman Peranginan Tasek Lama) [2] or Tasek Lama Park, [lower-alpha 2] [4] is an urban park located along Jalan Tasek Lama of Kampong Tasek Lama, in the heart of Bandar Seri Begawan. [4] [5] As one of the oldest recognised parks in the nation, [6] it features an artificial lake and waterfall. [7] The park is a popular destination for both locals and visitors, offering a rare green space within the city. In addition to its scenic landscape, it is known for its diverse bird population, attracting birdwatchers to observe about 80 bird species known to exist there. [5] [8]

History

On Jalan Tasek Lama in Kampong Tasek Lama, the Tasek Lama Recreational Park was built near to Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien College in the early 1990s. [9]

Features

Popular for a variety of outdoor activities, the park is a popular leisure place in the city. Surrounded by vegetation, the park offer pathways that go to the waterfall are used for jogging, walking, and running. [2] [10] The park offers various exercise facilities, including a reflexology path, gym equipment, and a children's play area. There are also hiking trails leading to Bukit Sarang Helang and other hills, such as Bukit Luba, Bukit Karamunting, and Bukit Markuching. [2] Additionally, the jungle trails of Bukit Markuching and Sarang Helang feature a wooden terrace by the waterfall and an observation tower that provides a panoramic view of the park. [11]

The park has been reported to support around 80 different bird species, including the straw-headed bulbul, white-rumped shama, oriental dollarbird, black-and-red broadbill, and white-throated kingfisher. [5] [8]

At the summit of Tasek Lama waterfall, a concrete dam was built in 1926 to direct the water flow to Brunei Town (present day Bandar Seri Begawan). In order to sustain the growing population, this initiative signalled the start of a series of initiatives from 1937 to 1947 that were aimed at improving the water supply system. [12] In 1964, the 60 acres (24 ha) Tasek Dam and a 7,300 cubic metres (260,000 cu ft) per day treatment facility were finished. [13] Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III opened the Tasek Dam on 13 February 1965. [9]

Events

To strengthen the bonds between their nations and Brunei, visiting dignitaries are invited to partake in a "Morning Walk" and engage in tree-planting activities. In 2007, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah and Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi walked through the park, commemorating the visit by planting palm seedlings together. [14] [15] During Prime Minister Najib Razak's official visit in 2009, he joined the Sultan and Prince Mohamed Bolkiah at the park, where they planted a Cyrtostachys renda tree. [16] [17] In 2012, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong began his day at the park with breakfast and a stroll alongside the Sultan, after which they jointly planted two Tristaniopsis trees near the waterfall. [18] [19] During their visit to Brunei in 2013, Teo Chee Hean and the Singapore delegation visited the park with Prince Al-Muhtadee Billah, Prince Abdul Malik, and other Bruneian ministers and officials. [20] Additionally, in 2011, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono accompanied the Sultan on an early morning stroll during his second visit since taking office in 2004, where he planted his own Symplocos polyandra tree as observed by several government officials from both nations. Sulaiman al-Qanuni ibni Sharif Ali, also known as Senior King and Adipati Agung, was the fifth Sultan of Brunei, according to Silsilah Raja-Raja Berunai. He succeeded his father in 1432 and ruled until his abdication in 1485, to allow his son Bolkiah to become Sultan.

Pengiran Anak Mohamed Alam, sometimes spelled Muhammad Alam, was a nobleman, magistrate and politician who became the fourth Speaker of the Brunei Legislative Council from 1971 until 1974 and Chief of Jabatan Adat Istiadat Negara from 1954 to 1981. He is the father of Pengiran Anak Saleha, the queen consort of Hassanal Bolkiah, the current Sultan of Brunei. He was also a maternal grandfather of Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince.

It is the first English secondary school in the country. The school is also one of the only three boys' secondary schools nationwide, with the other two being Muda Hashim Secondary School and Ma'had Islam Brunei. The school provides five years of secondary education leading up to GCE 'O' Level and IGCSE qualification.

A proposal for an 5 hectares protection status to be implemented on the island. The island is home to sundry vegetation and swamp forests.

The Jabatan Adat Istiadat Negara is a government department under the Prime Minister's Office that functions to guarantee the constant maintenance of Royal Customs. Matussin bin Omar, pen name D. P. Matussin, is a historian, civil servant and writer from Brunei who previously served as the third director of the Brunei Museum from 1987 to 1995. He started writing poetry, short tales, essays, and song lyrics in 1962. Since then, he has established himself as a well-known scholar of Bruneian literature and culture.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar 'Ali Saifuddien</span> Public park in Brunei

Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar 'Ali Saifuddien is a historical urban park, located in the Pusat Bandar of Bandar Seri Begawan, where significant state ceremonies are held, including the Sultan's birthday celebrations, National Day, the National Musabaqah Al-Quran, and the birthday of Prophet Muhammad, among others. Formerly known as Padang Besar, the park underwent renovations in 1983 and was renamed in honour of Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III. This site holds historical importance, as it was the location of Brunei's declaration of independence reading on 1 January 1984.
