Progresif Sdn Bhd. (formerly known as Progresif Cellular Sdn Bhd) is a Brunei-based Government Linked Company headquartered in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei. Founded in 2014, Progresif now has more than 130 employees and around 200,000 customers, [1] with eight retail stores throughout the kingdom.

History

Progresif was established in June 2014 after acquiring assets and infrastructure left by the now defunct B-Mobile Communications Sdn Bhd. [2]

In July 2014, Progresif appointed Paul Hyde as chief executive officer, [3] and entered into an $18 million contract with Chinese multinational telecommunications equipment provider Huawei to help update legacy infrastructure and launch a network stabilisation program. [4] This project required a full replacement of the mobile core network and Radio Access Network, in addition to upgrading the backhaul network and all base stations from 3G to HSPA+. In February 2016, the company announced plans to launch 4G LTE technology, and in April 2017, the company submitted an official request to Brunei's telecoms regulatory body, Authority for Info-Communications Technology Industry (AITI), to begin trial of a 4G network. In June 2017, telecom industry veteran Paul Taylor was named as CEO of the company. [9] In October 2017, Progresif relaunched the company website, adding significant content in the areas of news, local events, and technology, as well as content from the company's quarterly magazine, and articles on the Arts & Culture, Environment, Education, and Entrepreneurship. [10]

After the formation of Unified National Network (UNN), Progresif relaunched their products and services [1] in January 2020. At the same time, Hjh Nurul Haniah binti Hj Md Jaafar was internally promoted to the position of chief executive officer.

Enterprise solutions

In 2017, Progresif launched Progresif Solutions, a division devoted to enterprise solutions, particularly for business, banking, and government entities. [11] The first execution was for oil refinery operator Hengyi Industries Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Hong Kong Tianyi International Holding Co., Ltd., [12] for a project site in Pulau Muara Besar and company headquarters at the Empire Hotel & Country Club. [13]

Internet radio and magazine

Progresif launched Progresif Radio, Brunei's first mobile radio station, in November 2017, with dedicated apps available in Google Play and the App store. [14] [15] The station features localized content, user-generated content, and local bands, [16] as well as premium international content. [17] Auditions for DJ positions at the station attracted more than 100 applicants in August 2017. [18]

Progresif PAY mobile wallet

In May 2018, Progresif (partnered with Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam) released Progresif PAY, Brunei's first mobile wallet platform. [19] The branchless banking system allows Progresif subscribers to create a virtual debit card, with which they can pay bills, make donations, send money to other Progresif PAY users, and shop online. [20]

Brunei, formally Brunei Darussalam, is a country located on the north coast of the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia. Pan Borneo Highway, also known as Trans-Borneo Highway or Trans-Kalimantan Highway, is a road network on Borneo Island connecting two Malaysian states, Sabah and Sarawak, with Brunei and Kalimantan region in Indonesia. The highway is numbered AH150 in the Asian Highway Network and as Federal Route 1 in Sarawak. In Sabah, the route numbers given are 1, 13 and 22. The highway is a joint project between both governments which started as soon as the formation of Malaysia in 1963 which comprised Malaya, Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore. The lack of a road network system in Sarawak was the main factor of the construction.

The mass media in Brunei are strictly controlled by the government under Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, which has effectively imposed martial law in the country since the Brunei Revolt of 1962. News coverage consists of police-beat reporting, lifestyle features, and community events, with little in the way of diverse viewpoints. Reporters Without Borders reports there is "virtually no criticism of the government". The liberal democracy watchdog Freedom House lists Brunei's media as "not free".

Astro Radio Sdn Bhd is a Malaysian radio network company which operates radio broadcasting services and more since 1996. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Astro Malaysia Holdings Berhad. Astro Radio owns and manages 10 private radio stations which are transmitted through the FM radio spectrum. As of November 2021, Astro Radio still remains as the number one and largest radio network company in Malaysia with 77.7% of Peninsular Malaysians and 15.6 million listeners tuning in to its stations weekly, together with its Media Prima counterpart, Media Prima Audio, according to the GfK Radio Audience Measurement (RAM) Wave 1 in October 2021. ERA being at top of the list with the most audience reach estimated at 6,000,000 listeners, followed by SINAR and GEGAR.

Granted a 3G license in February 2005, b.mobile was Brunei’s first 3G mobile service provider, utilizing the established UMTS technology.
