St. Thomas (SPG) Church is one of the oldest churches in the city of Secunderabad, India. The church was built in the year 1852 [1] by the British missionary society called the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts. [2] The church is a prominent structure situated in close proximity to Secunderabad Railway Station.

History

The church was built in 1852. The church possessed extensive lands much of which were bought by the British government of Secunderabad in order to build the existing Secunderabad Railway Station. The church now serves a Telugu and Tamil congregation.

The church runs high schools in Secunderabad and Ammuguda. [3]

In 2023, the bishop was Rt. Rev. Dr. Moses Asirvatham; the Cathedral has outreach work in Trimulgherry, Mettuguda, Moosrambagh, Kazipet, Moosapet and Tuni. [1]

Architecture

The church is built in the Gothic Revival style that was popular during the Victorian era. However the exterior of the church is simple with the bell tower abutting the Altar. The layout of the church is a cruciform with a nave and two transepts. The altarpiece of the church is a stained glass window depicting Christ the Good Shepherd.

Christianity in the state of Tamil Nadu, India is the second largest religion in the state. According to tradition, St. Thomas, one of the twelve apostles, landed in Malabar Coast in AD 52. In the colonial age many Portuguese, Dutch, British and Italian Christians came to Tamil Nadu. Priests accompanied them not only to minister the colonisers but also to spread the Christian faith among the non-Christians in Tamil Nadu. Currently, Christians are a minority community comprising 6% of the total population. Basilica of Our Lady of the Assumption is a minor basilica located in Secunderabad, India. The decree designating it as a basilica was issued on 7 November 2008. The church is located on Sarojini Naidu Road in Secunderabad. It owes its early history to Father Daniel Murphy along with Bishop Carew. St. Mary's Church was completed in 1850. This church was formerly called the Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Hyderabad. In 1886, it ceased to be a cathedral. In 1871, a few nuns from St. Anne at Turin came here and opened a school that is popular as St. Ann's school.

St. Paul's Church is located in the corner of Old Poor House Road, and Bowring Hospital Road, next to the Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital, Bangalore Cantonment, India. Benjamin Henry Arthur Margoschis was a Protestant Christian missionary in India. He served the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts (SPG) as an overseas missionary in India. The inhabitants of Nazareth, a small town in Tamil Nadu, called him the "Father of Nazareth" and Margoschis Aiyar. Aiyar means clergyman in the native language. Reverend Margoschis was responsible for the development of the small town of Nazareth, which is situated at the southern part of Tamil Nadu, India.
