St Wilfrid's, Alford is the Church of England parish church in Alford, Lincolnshire, England. It is a Grade I listed building.
The church is named after St Wilfrid and is the second church to be built on the site, the earlier being constructed of wood. [1] The church was thought to have been built in 1350; but in the early 21st century, one corner of the building was found to date back to 1289. The tower was rebuilt between 1525 and 1535, and Sir Gilbert Scott led an extensive restoration of the building in 1867. [1]
Included within the church are a 14th-century rood screen dividing the chancel from the nave, a Jacobean pulpit, traces of 16th-century glass within the stained glass windows, and a 17th-century tomb within the chancel.
St Wilfrid's has a peal of six bells, originally cast and hung for full circle bellringing by John Taylors & Co of Loughborough in 1934.
The first peal of 5,040 changes was rung in June 1935; since then there have been a further 38 peals. [2] Bell ringers are drawn from a wide age range and work under the tutelage of a teacher. Since 1991 there have been 16 peals rung on the bells. [3]
In 2008 six St Wilfrid's bell ringers entered the local striking competition and were placed second, allowing them to enter the lower level of the county competition in which they were runners-up. In 2009 the St Wilfrid's team competed and won the local striking competition held at SS Mary & Nicholas, Wrangle; they entered the higher level of the county competitions in September 2009. [4] On 4 June 2011 the St Wilfrid's team competed and won the local six bell striking competition at Friskney. They entered the higher level of the county competitions in September 2011. [4]
Change ringing is the art of ringing a set of tuned bells in a tightly controlled manner to produce precise variations in their successive striking sequences, known as "changes". This can be by method ringing in which the ringers commit to memory the rules for generating each change, or by call changes, where the ringers are instructed how to generate each change by instructions from a conductor. This creates a form of bell music which cannot be discerned as a conventional melody, but is a series of mathematical sequences.

As of 2010 it is not regularly open to visitors because its foundations are moving and it is unsafe.

Addleshaw Tower is the free-standing bell tower of Chester Cathedral, in Chester, Cheshire, England. It was designed by George Pace, and built to house the cathedral bells. These had been hung in the cathedral's central tower, and needed overhaul, but it was considered to be unsafe to re-hang them in the tower without disturbing its architectural features. Despite the design resulting in some local controversy, the tower is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building. It is the first free-standing bell tower to be built by an English cathedral since the 15th century.

The Suffolk Guild of Ringers for the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich is a society and charity supporting the bell ringers and rings of bells in the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich who practice the art of change ringing. The Guild was established on 2 April 1923 at Ipswich and covers over 200 rings of bells in the county of Suffolk in the area that falls within the diocese boundary.
