Stacy Davis Gates (born December 25,1976) is an American labor leader and educator. She is president of the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU). In May 2022,she was elected president of the union after previously serving as vice president under Jesse Sharkey. [1]
Davis Gates grew up in South Bend,Indiana in a middle class household. [2] Her first job was a union job working in the cafeteria at the Memorial Hospital of South Bend. [2] She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in political science from St. Mary's College in 1999. [3] Later she studied nonprofit management at the University of Notre Dame and educational administration at Concordia University Chicago. [4]
Davis Gates began her career teaching history in 2004 at Englewood Technical Prep Academy High School,a public school on the south side of Chicago,Illinois. [5] In 2008,the school was closed as part of a series of closures led by the CEO of Chicago Public Schools (CPS),Arne Duncan,Davis Gates attributes this as the moment she was "radicalized." [6] [5]
After the closure of Englewood Technical Prep Academy,Davis Gates transitioned to Roberto Clemente Community Academy in the Ukrainian Village neighborhood of Chicago. [6] In May 2008,Davis Gates was one of 12 elected delegates for the Chicago Teachers Union who formed the Caucus of Rank-and-File Educators (CORE). [7]
In 2011,Davis Gates joined the staff of the Chicago Teachers Union as political director. [8]
In 2018,Jesse Sharkey succeeded Karen Lewis as president and Davis Gates was chosen as Sharkey's vice president following the recommendation of Lewis. [9]
As Vice President,she oversaw a 14-day strike in 2019,over failures to reach a contract. [10] [11] The majority of her time as vice president was characterized by the COVID-19 pandemic;in April 2020,Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker closed all schools to in-person instruction for the remainder of the school year. [12] In October of that year CPS announced a plan to return to in-person instruction,which Davis Gates and the CTU opposed. [13] Chicago Public Schools returned to in-person instruction in January 2021,despite concerns of the union and discussions of a potential strike from Davis Gates. [14] [15] In January 2022,the CTU went on a 5-day work-stoppage over safety concerns following a rise in COVID-19 cases. [16] [17]
In 2021,Governor Pritzker signed HB 2908 into law,establishing a fully elected board of education in Chicago by 2027,supported by the CTU and Davis Gates. [18] [19] [20]
In February 2022,CTU President Jesse Sharkey announced he would not seek reelection. [21] In May of that year Davis Gates and the rest of the Caucus of Rank-and-File Educators (CORE) were elected with 56% of the vote and she took office in July. [1] [22] [23]
In August 2022,she denied speculation that she would run for mayor in the upcoming 2023 election,instead endorsing CTU organizer and Cook County Commissioner Brandon Johnson. [24] [25] As president of the union,Davis Gates oversaw large contributions to Johnson's mayoral campaign;including,donating $8 per month per member's dues,to controversy and mixed support among CTU members. [26] [27] CTU contributed $2.4 million to fund the mayoral campaign,which Johnson ultimately won in an April runoff. [28]
In an August 2023 interview with South Side Weekly ,Davis Gates expressed optimism for the union's future relationship with the mayor and elected school board. [20]
Davis Gates lives on the south side of Chicago with her husband and three children. [29] Her grandparents both moved to Chicago from the Southeastern United States as part of the Great Migration,before settling in South Bend,Indiana. [6] [20]
In September 2023,Davis Gates faced controversy after a website critical of the Chicago Teacher Union published her son's name,photo and the name of the private high school he is enrolled. [30] [31] [32] Critics highlighted her past statements criticizing school choice initiatives,whereas Davis Gates highlighted her son's enrollment as representing a larger issue of disinvestment in public schools. Chicago Public Schools (CPS),officially classified as City of Chicago School District #299 for funding and districting reasons,in Chicago,Illinois,is the fourth-largest school district in the United States,after New York,Los Angeles,and Miami-Dade County. For the 2020–21 school year,CPS reported overseeing 638 schools,including 476 elementary schools and 162 high schools;of which 513 were district-run,115 were charter schools,9 were contract schools and 1 was a SAFE school. The district serves 340,658 students. Chicago Public School students attend a particular school based on their area of residence,except for charter,magnet,and selective enrollment schools.

Sophia D. King is an American politician and former member of Chicago City Council,who served as alderman from the 4th ward,which includes portions of the neighborhoods Bronzeville,Hyde Park,Kenwood,Oakland,and South Loop. King was appointed to the position in 2016 to replace retiring incumbent Will Burns. She won a special election to serve out the rest term of the term in 2017 and was re-elected to a full term in 2019. She was a member and chair of the City Council's Progressive Reform Caucus. Lori Elaine Lightfoot is an American politician and attorney who was the 56th mayor of Chicago from 2019 until 2023. She is a member of the Democratic Party. Before becoming mayor,Lightfoot worked in private legal practice as a partner at Mayer Brown and held various government positions in Chicago. She served as president of the Chicago Police Board and chair of the Chicago Police Accountability Task Force. In 2019,Lightfoot defeated Toni Preckwinkle in a runoff election for Chicago mayor. She ran again in 2023 but failed to qualify for the runoff,becoming the city's first incumbent mayor to not be reelected since Jane Byrne in 1983.
Jesse Sharkey is an American former schoolteacher and labor leader in Chicago. From 2010 to 2014,he was the Vice President of the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU). In October 2014,he became acting President of the CTU after Karen Lewis stepped down as President due to illness. In May 2019,he and other members of the Caucus of Rank and File Educators (CORE) were re-elected to their leadership positions with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
The 2019 Chicago Public Schools strike was a labor dispute between Chicago Public Schools and the Chicago Teachers Union and the Service Employees International Union Local 73 that lasted 14 days. The strike began on October 17,2019,when both unions failed to reach a contract agreement with Chicago Public Schools over compensation,benefits,staffing,wrap-around services such as counselors,nurses,and librarians,and caps on class sizes. On October 31,the strike officially ended when the mayor and the Chicago Teachers Union reached a tentative agreement allowing students to go back to class on November 1,2019. The agreement included millions of dollars dedicated to reducing class sizes,hundreds more social workers,nurses and librarians,and a 16 percent salary increase over the coming five years,but did not achieve all the main goals of the unions.
Brandon Johnson is an American educator and politician who has served as the 57th Mayor of Chicago since 2023. A member of the Democratic Party,Johnson previously served on the Cook County Board of Commissioners from 2018 to 2023,representing the 1st district.
The 2023 Chicago mayoral election was held on February 28,2023,to elect the mayor of Chicago,Illinois. With no candidate receiving a majority of votes in the initial round of the election,a runoff election was held on April 4. This two-round election took place alongside other 2023 Chicago elections,including races for City Council,city clerk,city treasurer,and police district councils. The election was officially nonpartisan,with winner Brandon Johnson being elected to a four-year term which began on May 15.

Gubernatorial candidates ran on tickets with candidates for lieutenant governor. The incumbent governor and lieutenant governor,first-term Democrats J. B. Pritzker and Juliana Stratton,sought re-election together against Republican nominees Illinois State Senator Darren Bailey and his running mate Stephanie Trussell.

Each alderperson represents one of Chicago's 50 wards. The elections are non-partisan and use a two-round system where the top two finishers compete in a second-round runoff if no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote in the first round. The elections are part of the 2023 Chicago elections,which include elections for Mayor,City Clerk,and City Treasurer.
