The sequel trilogy concept was revived when the Walt Disney Company entered negotiations to acquire Lucasfilm in 2011. Lucas produced new story treatments, but these were largely discarded. Both the acquisition and plans to produce the trilogy were announced in late 2012.
Tag and Bink are the main characters in a Star Wars spoof series of comic books that parody the films. The characters were created by writer Kevin Rubio and artist Lucas Marangon. They are a pair of minor characters whose activities deliberately or accidentally influence the events in the first and second film trilogies in ways that explain some of the implausible events of the series. The title of their initial appearance—Tag & Bink Are Dead—is a reference to the Tom Stoppard play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, itself titled after a line from Hamlet.

The Last Jedi follows Rey as she seeks the aid of Luke Skywalker in hopes of turning the tide for the Resistance in the fight against Kylo Ren and the First Order while General Leia Organa, Finn, and Poe Dameron attempt to escape a First Order attack on the dwindling Resistance fleet. The film features the first posthumous film performance by Fisher, who died in December 2016, and the film is dedicated to her memory.

It is formed following the fall of the Galactic Empire after the events of Return of the Jedi (1983). Secretly guided by the resurrected Emperor Palpatine, the First Order aims to destroy the New Republic and rule the galaxy as an autocratic military dictatorship. Under the leadership of Supreme Leader Snoke and Kylo Ren, it is the main antagonistic faction of the sequel trilogy and is fought by the Resistance. Captain Phasma is a fictional character in the Star Wars franchise, portrayed by English actress Gwendoline Christie. Finn is portrayed by John Boyega in The Force Awakens,The Last Jedi (2017) and The Rise of Skywalker (2019). Boyega won the BAFTA Rising Star Award for his performance in The Force Awakens. Poe's mother is Shara Bey, an A-wing pilot who adventures with Leia Organa, and his father is Kes Dameron, part of a special ground force known as the Pathfinders who are led by Han Solo. The story involves their adventures alongside Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, Han Solo, Chewbacca, Lando Calrissian, and others in the aftermath of the Battle of Endor as the Empire attempts to avoid total defeat. Written by Greg Rucka and illustrated by Marco Checchetto, the series was published by Marvel Comics between September 9 and October 21, 2015.

Star Wars Galaxy's Edge: Black Spire is a 2019 novel written by Delilah S. Dawson and published by Del Rey Books. The novel is a sequel to the 2018 novel Phasma, also by Dawson. It takes place in the Star Wars galaxy, immediately after the events of Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi.
Star Wars: Duel of the Fates was the original draft of the third film in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Named after the franchise's musical composition of the same name, the script was written in 2016 by Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly while Trevorrow was attached as director. After Trevorrow left the project in 2017, it was replaced with a script by J. J. Abrams and Chris Terrio that became 2019's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, although the film retained modified ideas from Duel of the Fates.
