Ollisteen 'Steen' Miles (August 20,1946 –March 29,2017) was an American politician from the state of Georgia. A member of the Democratic Party,Miles was a former member of the Georgia State Senate. Sworn into office in 2005,Miles served on the Banking and Financial Institutions committee,as well as the Public Safety and Homeland Security,MARTOC,Special Judiciary,and State Institutions and Property Committees.
Miles was a former television newscaster,working for WXIA-TV. She ran for chief executive officer of DeKalb County,Georgia,in 2000 and 2008, [1] [2] losing both times. She also ran for Lieutenant Governor of Georgia in the 2006 election. In the 2014 primary,she ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic nomination for the open United States Senate seat created by Saxby Chambliss's retirement. [3] Miles died on March 29,2017. [4]

The 2000 United States Senate elections were held on November 7,2000. The elections coincided with other federal and state elections,including the presidential election which was won by Republican George W. Bush. These elections took place 6 years after Republicans had won a net gain of eight seats in Senate Class 1. Despite George W. Bush's victory in the presidential election,the Republicans lost four senate seats,the most a winning president's party has lost since the passage of the 17th Amendment. This election marked the first election year since 1990 where Democrats made net gains in the Senate. Democrats defeated incumbent Republicans in Delaware,Michigan,Minnesota,Missouri,and Washington,and they won an open Republican-held seat in Florida. In Missouri,the winner was elected posthumously. The Republicans defeated Democratic incumbent Chuck Robb in Virginia,and won an open seat in Nevada. Additionally,Republican Senator Paul Coverdell of Georgia died earlier in the year and was replaced by Democratic appointee Zell Miller,who then went on to win the special election.

In February 2014,she announced her intention not to run for reelection,and instead to run for the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors. Negrete McLeod lost the November election to Republican state Assemblyman Curt Hagman.
Mohammed Kasim Reed is an American lawyer and politician who served as the 59th mayor of Atlanta,Georgia's state capital and largest city,from 2010 to 2018. A Democrat,Reed was a member of the Georgia House of Representatives from 1998 to 2002 and represented the 35th District in the Georgia State Senate from 2003 to 2009. He served as campaign manager for Shirley Franklin's successful Atlanta mayoral campaign in 2001. After Franklin was term limited from the mayor's office,Reed successfully ran for the position in 2009. Inaugurated on January 4,2010,Reed was elected to a second term in 2013.
