Stefano Sposetti (born 22 December 1958) is a Swiss amateur astronomer and a prolific discoverer of minor planets. [2] [3] He lives in Gnosca, in the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland in the Ticino Alps, where the Gnosca Observatory is located.
Sposetti took images of 2004 FH, an Aten asteroid that made a sub-lunar flyby of Earth. [1] In addition, he detects the optical counterparts of gamma-ray bursts and conducts transit photometry on exoplanets at his observatory. [4]
As of 2019, Sposetti's discoveries include 164 minor planets (numbered only). The Minor Planet Center ranks him 70th in the list of all-time, worldwide discoverers. [5] Asteroid 22354 Sposetti has been named after him. [6]

Giuseppe Piazzi was an Italian Catholic priest of the Theatine order, mathematician, and astronomer. He established an observatory at Palermo, now the Osservatorio Astronomico di Palermo – Giuseppe S. Vaiana. He is perhaps most famous for his discovery of the first dwarf planet, Ceres.
Vincenzo Silvano Casulli, usually known as Silvano Casulli was an Italian amateur astronomer and a discoverer of minor planets at his Vallemare di Borbona Observatory in Lazio.
Pierre Antonini is a retired French mathematics professor and amateur astronomer who has discovered several minor planets and two supernovae at his private Observatoire de Bédoin located at Bédoin, southeastern France. For many of his discoveries he used a 16-cm telescope or a 30-cm telescope.
Piero Sicoli is an Italian astronomer and discoverer of minor planets, observing at the Italian Sormano Astronomical Observatory. As the observatory's coordinator, he is responsible for close encounters computation of near-Earth objects (NEOs), orbit computations, and identification of asteroids. The Observatory's focus is the examination and tracking of NEOs in Solar System.
Francesco Manca is an Italian amateur astronomer and discoverer of minor planets at the Sormano Astronomical Observatory in northern Italy.
Marco Cavagna was an Italian amateur astronomer.
The Santa Lucia Stroncone Astronomical Observatory is an astronomical observatory located at 350 metres (1,150 ft) altitude in Stroncone, near the city of Terni, in Umbria, north central Italy.
Giovanni de Sanctis is an Italian astronomer and discoverer of minor planets at the Osservatorio Astronomico di Torino in Turin, Italy. His name is sometimes spelt DeSanctis, particularly in the Minor Planet Circulars. The Minor Planet Center credits him with the discovery of 42 numbered minor planets, most of which he discovered at ESO's La Silla site in northern Chile in the early 1980s.
Bassano Bresciano is a comune in the province of Brescia, in Lombardy. As of 2011 Bassano Bresciano had a population of 2,237.
Aldo Di Clemente is an Italian amateur astronomer. He has worked as a technician at the Campo Imperatore station of the Osservatorio astronomico di Roma since 1982. His assistance was valuable in conducting the Campo Imperatore Near-Earth Object Survey (CINEOS).
The Observatory of Turin is an astronomical observatory owned and operated by Italy's National Institute for Astrophysics. It is located on the top of a hill in the town of Pino Torinese near Turin, in the north Italian Piedmont region. The observatory was founded in 1759. At Pino Torinese, several asteroid discoveries were made by Italian astronomer Luigi Volta in the late 1920s and early 1930s. The asteroid 2694 Pino Torinese was named after the observatory's location.
1313 Berna, provisional designation 1933 QG, is a background asteroid and synchronous binary system from the Eunomian region in the central asteroid belt, approximately 14 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 24 August 1933, by Belgian astronomer Sylvain Arend at the Uccle Observatory in Belgium. The assumed S-type asteroid has a longer-than average rotation period of 25.5 hours and is likely elongated in shape. It was named for the Swiss capital of Bern. The discovery of an 11-kilometer-sized companion was announced in February 2004.
The Pistoia Mountains Astronomical Observatory, also known as the San Marcello Observatory and the Pian dei Termini Observatory, is an astronomical observatory in San Marcello Piteglio, Tuscany, central Italy.
The Gnosca Observatory is an astronomical observatory at Gnosca, Ticino, Switzerland. It is owned and operated by amateur astronomer Stefano Sposetti and has the observatory code 143. At Gnosca Observatory, Stefano Sposetti has discovered numerous minor planets (also see Category:Discoveries by Stefano Sposetti).
Walter Ferreri, originally from Buddusò in Sardinia, is an astronomer at the Italian Osservatorio Astronomico di Torino, science writer and discoverer of minor planets.
The Astronomical Observatory of Mallorca is an observatory just south of Costitx, Mallorca, Spain.
Erwin Schwab is a German amateur astronomer and discoverer of minor planets, who works at the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research, near Darmstadt, Germany. He has discovered and co-discovered more than 80 asteroids from the Starkenburg, Tzec Maun and Taunus observatories. As volunteer scientist for the European Space Agency (ESA) he recovered near-Earth objects and comets. From 2014 to 2021 he recovered 30 lost comets, which equates to about 25% of the worldwide proportion in that timespan. Using the Schmidt telescope at Calar Alto Observatory to search for a lost comet he discovered in 2019 a unique variable star – the first known eclipsing stream-fed intermediate polar, cataloged as J1832.4-1627
La Sagra Observatory is an astronomical observatory located in the province of Granada, Spain. It uses four robotic telescopes both designed and built by the scientists of the Observatorio Astronómico de Mallorca (OAM) who operate them remotely by telecontrol daily, discharging data from Mallorca using the Internet, to process them by means of algorithms designed "in house" which helped to detect asteroid 367943 Duende. among the other 1706 asteroids, with a 12th place in the ranking of asteroid discoveries. Its activities include, as part of its La Sagra Sky Survey, tracking small Solar System bodies, particularly near-Earth objects, and space debris.
José De Queiroz is a Portuguese-born, Swiss amateur astronomer and discoverer of minor planets, as well as a restaurant manager in Falera in the Swiss canton of Graubünden.
The Sormano Astronomical Observatory is an astronomical observatory north of Milan, Italy. Located near the Swiss border at 1000 meters elevation at the mountain village of Sormano in the pre-Alps, the observatory was privately funded by the Gruppo Astrofili Brianza and built in 1986.
