Stephen Douglas Rosenthal (born October 24, 1949) is an American attorney who served as the 37th Attorney General of Virginia. Elected by the Virginia General Assembly to fill the vacancy of Mary Sue Terry, he remained in office until the election of Jim Gilmore. [1]

He was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Virginia's 6th district (1946-1948), 26th Attorney General of Virginia (1948-1957) and the 58th Governor of Virginia (1958-1962). He was originally a supporter of Massive resistance to the integration of public schools. When the courts ruled that unconstitutional, he reversed himself and worked with the legislature to end massive resistance. Almond then became an Associate Judge of the United States Court of Customs and Patent Appeals (1962-1973) before becoming Senior Judge of the United States Court of Customs and Patent Appeals (1973-1982). He would ultimately advance to Senior Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in 1982, and served until his death in 1986.

Barrett v. Rosenthal, 40 Cal.4th 33 (2006), was a California Supreme Court case concerning online defamation. The case resolved a defamation claim brought by Stephen Barrett, Terry Polevoy, and attorney Christopher Grell against Ilena Rosenthal and several others. Barrett and others alleged that the defendants had republished libelous information about them on the internet. In a unanimous decision, the court held that Rosenthal was a "user of interactive computer services" and therefore immune from liability under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act.

1985 Virginia gubernatorial election

In the 1985 Virginia gubernatorial election, incumbent Governor Chuck Robb, a Democrat, was unable to seek re-election due to term limits. Jerry Baliles, the Attorney General of Virginia, was nominated by the Democratic Party to run against the Republican nominee, Wyatt B. Durrette. This is the most recent time the Democratic candidate won a gubernatorial race in Virginia with a double-digit margin of victory.

Stephen Allison was elected in November 2008 after a narrow victory over Democratic incumbent Charles F. Jenkins.

Allie Edward Stakes Stephens, usually known as "A. E. S." or "Gi" Stephens, was a Virginia lawyer and Democratic Party politician who served in both houses of the Virginia General Assembly and as the 27th Lieutenant Governor of Virginia from 1952 to 1962. His state political career ended with a loss in the Democratic primary for Governor in 1961, after he and Governor James Lindsay Almond Jr. broke with the Byrd Organization, which wanted to continue its policy of Massive Resistance to desegregation of Virginia's schools after both the Virginia Supreme Court and a 3-judge federal panel ruled most elements unconstitutional in 1959.

The Virginia Attorney General election of 2013 took place on November 5, 2013, to elect the Attorney General of Virginia. The incumbent Attorney General, Republican Ken Cuccinelli, did not run for re-election. He was instead his party's nominee in the 2013 gubernatorial election.

2017 Virginia Attorney General election

The Virginia Attorney General election of 2017 was held on November 7, 2017. The incumbent attorney general, Democrat Mark Herring, was expected to run for governor, but announced he would run for re-election instead. As only Herring and Republican John Adams qualified for their respective party primaries, the two automatically became their parties' nominees. In the general election, Herring defeated Adams to win a second term as Attorney General of Virginia.

Stephen Richard McCullough is a Justice of the Supreme Court of Virginia, former judge of the Court of Appeals of Virginia, and former career attorney in the Office of the Attorney General of Virginia. On March 10, 2016, the General Assembly of Virginia elected him to a twelve-year term on the Supreme Court, beginning March 3, 2016. His formal investiture occurred on May 23, 2016.

2021 Virginia Attorney General election Election for Commonwealth’s Attorney General

The 2021 Virginia Attorney General election will be held on November 2, 2021, to elect the next Attorney General of Virginia. Incumbent Democratic Incumbent Attorney General Mark Herring is running for a third term. Herring initially planned to run for governor, but decided to run for re-election.
