Stephen John Ellis (born 7 April 1950) is an English rock/pop singer. His biggest success was with the band Love Affair in the late 1960s.
Stephen John Ellis was born in Edgware, Middlesex. When his career as a professional musician took off, he was working part-time at a Co-op. [1]
When Ellis left his first band, the Clifton Bystanders, he formed his first band as the lead vocalist, which was called Soul Survivors, formed when he was fifteen. [2] The Soul Survivors formed into Love Affair in 1966, with Rex Brayley, Mick Jackson, Lynton Guest, and Maurice Bacon. A few months later, in early 1967, the band released their first two singles, including "Everlasting Love", a song that knocked The Beatles' "Hello, Goodbye" off the number one spot on British charts. Love Affair would go on to have more commercial success, with songs such as "A Day Without Love", "Rainbow Valley", and "Bringing on Back the Good Times". [3]
In 1967, Ellis and the band were arrested for climbing the statue of Eros at Piccadilly Circus. [4] They were each fined £12 for the crime. [4] Ellis later felt that Love Affair had run its course, and he left in December 1969 for a solo career: "We never really made it big anywhere but Britain and I think that if we had started to happen in America, I wouldn't have left." [5]
Ellis subsequently had limited chart success with the rock band Widowmaker, [3] releasing the album Widowmaker in 1976. Widowmaker toured the UK with Nazareth, and in June 1976 joined the stadium tour, The Who Put The Boot In opening for leading rock acts such as Little Feat, The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Streetwalkers and the headline act The Who. Ellis left the band after touring with Electric Light Orchestra, and with a new lead singer (John Butler), released their second album, Too Late to Cry in 1977.
In 1972, he formed the band Ellis, [3] a short lived partnership with keyboardist Zoot Money. Other members included ex-Peter Bardens guitarist Andy Gee; ex-Fat Mattress bassist Jimmy Leverton, later replaced by Nick South; and drummer Dave Lutton. The group released two albums, Riding on the Crest of a Slump in 1972, and Why Not? the following year. [6] In 1976, one of the most popular Serbian and ex-Yugoslav bands, Smak, covered his song "El Doomo" under the title "El dumo", and achieved great success with it.
He also sang on the soundtrack of Loot , a 1970 film based on Joe Orton's play, directed by Silvio Narizzano.
Ellis was performing briefly with New Amen Corner during 2013 and had an album with appearances by Paul Weller and Roger Daltrey out on Demon Records in 2008, entitled The Best of Days. [3]
Ellis’ first band was called The Clifton Bystanders: [7] "My first band were called The Clifton Bystanders which was two Irish brothers from school on catalogue guitars and me on biscuit tins as my dad was having none of it when I asked for a drum kit on H.P. I was thirteen."
Steve currently lives in Brighton, England. Ellis was influenced by the rock and roll of the 1950s, but was mainly inspired by rhythm and blues music. [7]

The Pretenders are a British-American rock band formed in March 1978. The original band consisted of founder and main songwriter Chrissie Hynde, James Honeyman-Scott, Pete Farndon and Martin Chambers. Following the deaths of Honeyman-Scott in 1982 and Farndon in 1983, the band experienced numerous personnel changes; Hynde has been the band's only consistent member.
Michael Ronson was an English musician, songwriter, arranger, and producer. He achieved critical and commercial success working with David Bowie as the guitarist of the Spiders from Mars. He was a session musician who recorded five studio albums with Bowie followed by four with Ian Hunter, and also worked as a sideman in touring bands with Van Morrison and Bob Dylan. A classically trained musician, Ronson was known for his melodic approach to guitar playing.

The Steve Miller Band is an American rock band formed in 1966 in San Francisco, California. The band is led by Steve Miller on guitar and lead vocals. The group had a string of mid- to late-1970s hit singles that are staples of classic rock, as well as several earlier psychedelic rock albums. Miller left his first band to move to San Francisco and form the Steve Miller Blues Band. Shortly after Harvey Kornspan negotiated the band's contract with Capitol Records in 1967, the band shortened its name to the Steve Miller Band. In February 1968, the band recorded its debut album, Children of the Future. It went on to produce the albums Sailor, Brave New World, Your Saving Grace, Number 5, Rock Love, Fly Like an Eagle, Book of Dreams, among others. The band's Greatest Hits 1974–78, released in 1978, sold over 13 million copies. In 2016, Steve Miller was inducted as a solo artist in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Wicked Lester was a rock band based in New York City. Two notable members were bassist Gene Klein and rhythm guitarist Stanley Eisen. Originally formed in 1970 as Rainbow, the band changed its name to Wicked Lester in 1971 to avoid confusion with another local band named "Rainbow". Although it secured a record deal with Epic Records and recorded an album, the deal fell through and the band fell apart during 1972. Klein and Eisen, feeling that the band's failure was a result of its lack of vision and direction, decided to found a new band from its remnants. They changed their names to the respective Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, auditioned a new drummer and lead guitarist, and formed the band Kiss by the end of January 1973.
"Everlasting Love" is a song written by Buzz Cason and Mac Gayden, originally a 1967 hit for Robert Knight and since covered numerous times, most successfully by Love Affair, as well as Town Criers, Rex Smith & Rachel Sweet, Carl Carlton, Sandra Cretu, U2 and Gloria Estefan. The original version of "Everlasting Love" was recorded by Knight in Nashville, with Cason and Gayden aiming to produce it in a Motown style reminiscent of the Four Tops and the Temptations. When released as a single, the song reached No. 13 on the US chart in 1967. Subsequently, the song has reached the US top 40 three times, most successfully as performed by Carl Carlton, peaking at No. 6 in 1974, with more moderate success by the duo Rex Smith and Rachel Sweet and Gloria Estefan.
Oceansize were an English rock band from Manchester, formed in 1998. The band consisted of Mike Vennart, Steve Durose, Richard "Gambler" Ingram, Mark Heron (drums) and Jon Ellis for the majority of its career, with Steve Hodson replacing Ellis on bass guitar in 2006.
That Petrol Emotion were a London-based Northern Ireland-originating band with an American vocalist, Steve Mack. He took his stage name 'Zoot' from Zoot Sims after seeing him in concert.
