Steven M. "Steve" Gottwalt (born October 16,1961) is a Minnesota politician and former member of the Minnesota House of Representatives. A member of the Republican Party of Minnesota,he represented District 15A,which included portions of Stearns County in the west central part of the state. He is also an insurance salesman and the owner of Steve Gottwalt Consulting. [1]
Gottwalt graduated from St. John's Preparatory School in Collegeville,then went on to the College of St. Thomas in Saint Paul,earning his B.A. in Journalism and English in 1984. He participated in the United States Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC,not to be confused with military service) from 1983-1985. He worked as a radio broadcaster for KSJR-FM and WJON,and later as a network contract manager for Medica Health Plans (1995–1996),as director of network contracting for United HealthCare's seniors program EverCare (1996–1997),as director of communications for the Diocese of St. Cloud (1997–2006,) and as director of communications and consumer affairs for regional grocer Coborn's Inc. (2006-2011). In 2011,Gottwalt launched his own business,Steve Gottwalt Consulting LLC,providing communications,PR and benefits consulting services. [1] [2]
Gottwalt has been a member of the St. Cloud,Minnesota,Chamber of Commerce,the St. Cloud Area Economic Development Partnership,the St. Cloud Regional Airport Board,and the Central Minnesota Transportation Alliance. He was chair of the St. Cloud Area Human Services Council from 1992–1995,a board member of the St. Cloud Area Planning Organization from 1997–1999,a board member of the Great River Regional Library from 1999–2001,and a member of the St. Cloud mayor's Government Reform and Efficiency Task Force from 1999–2001. He was a member of the St. Cloud City Council from 1997–2006,also serving as the council's vice president during that time. [2] Gottwalt has also served as spokesman and communications director for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Saint Cloud [3]
Gottwalt was first elected in 2006,and was re-elected in 2008,2010. In 2012,he was re-elected to the newly drawn District 14A seat but resigned before the beginning of the new legislative session. He is a former chair of the House Health and Human Services Reform Committee,and also served on the Health and Human Services Finance,Taxes,and Ways &Means committees. [4] During his tenure,Gottwalt sponsored an amendment to the Minnesota Constitution that would have banned same-sex marriage. [5] Voters rejected the amendment in 2012. [6]
On January 3,2013,Gottwalt announced his intention to vacate his seat before the end of the month to join the Center for Diagnostic Imaging as its director of state legislative policy. [7] He vacated his seat on January 7,2013. [8]
In 2011,Gottwalt came under fire from some conservatives in his party for supporting elements of Barack Obama's Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The conservative Citizens' Council for Health Freedom stated that he was attempting to implement the "command and control" infrastructure of Obamacare. [9] Gottwalt subsequently withdrew the legislation. [10]
Gottwalt came under the scrutiny of members of the House Ethics Committee in 2012 when lawmakers from that committee asked whether an arrangement violated ethics rules. [11] The arrangement in question occurred in 2011,when Gottwalt sponsored the Healthy Minnesota Contribution Program,a bill that diverted Minnesotans receiving MinnesotaCare to the private insurance market. [12] The legislation was part of the Republican agenda during the government shutdown and was passed in July of that year. Gottwalt then obtained a license for himself to sell insurance and joined Boys and Tyler,a firm that actively lobbied for the bill. [13] In his Statement of Economic Interests, [14] filed with the Minnesota Campaign Finance Board,Gottwalt failed to disclose his insurance sales business activities. [13] When questioned about the conflict of interest,he defended his relationship to John Tyler,owner of Boys and Tyler,saying "The fact that I'm involved in that doesn't mean we were sneakily trying to come up with something to benefit ourselves. It's actually the other way around because we worked together." [13]
Steven A. Sviggum is a Minnesota politician,a member of the University of Minnesota Board of Regents,and an executive assistant to and communications director for the Republican caucus in the Minnesota Senate. A former Speaker and member of the Minnesota House of Representatives,Sviggum represented District 28B in the southeastern part of the state. The area was known as District 25A until the 1982 legislative redistricting,and then as District 26A until the 1992 redistricting,and has included all or portions of Dakota,Dodge,Goodhue,Olmsted,Steele,Wabasha,Waseca and Winona counties.
Martin John "Marty" Seifert is a former Republican Minority Leader and former member of the Minnesota House of Representatives. He represented District 21A,a predominantly rural district in southwestern Minnesota that includes portions of Lyon,Redwood and Yellow Medicine counties,and the cities of Marshall and Redwood Falls. In 2010 and 2014,he unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination for Governor of Minnesota.
Richard Michael Nolan is an American politician and businessman who served as the U.S. representative from Minnesota's 8th congressional district from 2013 to 2019. He previously served as the U.S. representative from Minnesota's 6th congressional district between 1975 and 1981 and was also a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives from 1969 until 1973.
Paul Thissen is an American politician and jurist serving as an associate justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court. He previously served as the Speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives and DFL Minority Leader. Thissen was the longest-serving leader of the Minnesota House Democrats since Martin Olav Sabo in the 1970s. A member of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (DFL),he represented District 61B in south Minneapolis. First elected in 2002,Thissen was reelected every two years through 2016. On April 17,2018,Governor Mark Dayton appointed Thissen to the Minnesota Supreme Court. He was sworn in on May 14,2018. He is the first person to have served both as Minnesota House Speaker and on the Minnesota Supreme Court.
Torrey Westrom is an American businessman and politician and member of the Minnesota Senate. A Republican,he represents District 12,which includes all or parts of Big Stone,Douglas,Grant,Pope,Stearns,Stevens,Traverse and Wilkin Counties. He is the first known blind person to be elected to the Minnesota Legislature.
Erik Philip Paulsen is an American businessman and politician who represented Minnesota's 3rd congressional district in the United States House of Representatives from 2009 to 2019. A member of the Republican Party,he served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 1995 to 2009 and as majority leader from 2003 to 2007.
Yvonne Prettner Solon is an American politician who served as the 47th lieutenant governor of Minnesota,from 2011 to 2015. She is the sixth consecutive woman to serve in that capacity and is a member of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party. She served with Governor Mark Dayton,who successfully ran for reelection,while she chose to retire at the end of her term.
John Hottinger is a Minnesota attorney and politician and a former member and majority leader of the Minnesota Senate. First elected in 1990,he was re-elected in 1992,1996,2000 and 2002. A Democrat,he represented the old District 24 prior to the 2002 redistricting,and the District 23 thereafter. The district included portions of Blue Earth,Le Sueur,Nicollet,Sibley and Waseca counties in the south central part of the state.
David W. Hann is a Minnesota politician and a former minority leader of the Minnesota Senate. A Republican,he represented District 48,which consisted of the cities of Eden Prairie and Minnetonka,from 2003-2017. He is currently the chair of the Republican Party of Minnesota.
Kurt Zellers is an American politician who served as speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2011 to 2013 and minority leader from 2009 to 2011. A member of the Republican Party of Minnesota,he represented the 34B district in Hennepin County. He was a candidate in the 2014 Minnesota gubernatorial election,losing in the Republican primary.
Thomas E. Huntley is a Minnesota politician and former member of the Minnesota House of Representatives. A member of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL),he represented District 7A,which includes portions of the city of Duluth in St. Louis County in the northeastern part of the state. He is a retired associate professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at the University of Minnesota Duluth and former director of Institutional Relations at the University's School of Medicine.
Daniel Mark "Doc" Severson is an American Republican politician. He is a former member of the Minnesota House of Representatives who represented District 14A,which includes portions of Benton and Stearns counties in the north central part of the state. He is a retired U.S. Navy fighter pilot,business owner,and substitute teacher. As of 2022,Severson is a current candidate for the District 4 School Board Member of the Lee County School District in Florida.
Joseph R. Hoppe is an American politician and former member of the Minnesota House of Representatives. A member of the Republican Party of Minnesota,he represented District 47B,which included portions of Carver County in the southwestern part of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. Before becoming a politician,Hoppe worked as a local businessman and in communications.
Tara Kay Mack is a Minnesota politician and former member of the Minnesota House of Representatives. A Democrat,he was also a director of parks and recreation for the city of St. Cloud,and a teacher and coach. On May 17,2010,he announced that he would not seek a fourth term.

A special election was held in the U.S. state of Minnesota on February 12,2013 to elect a new representative for District 14A in the Minnesota House of Representatives,caused by the resignation of Representative Steve Gottwalt on January 7,2013. A primary election was not held. The election coincided with the District 19A special election. Tama Theis,the Republican Party of Minnesota nominee,won the special election.
The Eighty-eighth Minnesota Legislature was the legislature of the U.S. state of Minnesota from January 8,2013,to January 5,2015. It was composed of the Senate and the House of Representatives,based on the results of the 2012 Senate election and the 2012 House election. The seats were apportioned based on the 2010 United States census. It first convened in Saint Paul on January 8,2013 and last met on May 16,2014. It held its regular session from January 8 to May 20,2013,and from February 25 to May 16,2014. A special session was held on September 9,2013,to pass disaster aid legislation related to damage caused by storms and flooding in June 2013 and winter storms in April 2013.
