Stephen Ashley West (born April 28,1970) is an American attorney and politician serving as a member of the Kentucky Senate from the 27th district. He assumed office on March 23,2015.
West was born in Paris,Kentucky and attended Grant County High School. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications from Eastern Kentucky University in 1993 and a Juris Doctor from the Salmon P. Chase College of Law at Northern Kentucky University in 1996. [1]
Outside of politics,West has worked as a cattle farmer,attorney,and real estate agent. [2] He was elected to the Kentucky Senate in a March 3,2015 special election and assumed office on March 23,2015. [3] During the 2015 and 2017 legislative sessions,West served as vice chair of the Senate Agriculture Committee. During the 2019–2020 legislative session,he served as vice chair of the Senate Education Committee. Since 2019,he has served as vice chair of the Senate Education Committee. West also serves as co-chair of the Senate Administrative Regulation Review Subcommittee. [4] [5]
Wendell Hampton Ford was an American politician from Kentucky. A member of the Democratic Party,he served as Governor of Kentucky from 1971 to 1974,and as a member of the United States Senate for 24 years from 1974 to 1999. He was the first person to be successively elected lieutenant governor,governor,and United States senator in Kentucky history. He was the Senate Democratic whip from 1991 to 1999,and was considered the leader of the state's Democratic Party from his election as governor in 1971 until he retired from the Senate in 1999. At the time of his retirement he was the longest-serving senator in Kentucky's history,a mark which was then surpassed by Mitch McConnell in 2009. Ford is the last Democrat to have served as a Senator from the state of Kentucky.
