Steven Kelly is an American politician and law enforcement officer. A Republican,he was elected in the 2024 Montana House of Representatives election to represent the 4th district and is set to take office on January 6th,2025. [1] In the general election,he defeated Democratic nomination Joanne Morrow. [2]
Prior to his career in politics,Kelly was a police officer. [1] Kelly has described himself as a conservative Republican, [3] and has declared opposition to property taxes,described illegal immigration as a federal threat,and has declared opposition to political bias in the Montana Supreme Court. He served as the lieutenant governor of Montana from 1991 to 1997 and as the U.S. representative for Montana's at-large congressional district from 2001 to 2013. Rehberg was the Republican nominee for the United States Senate in 1996 and 2012,losing to Democratic incumbents Max Baucus 49% to 44% and Jon Tester 48% to 44%,respectively. He subsequently became a co-chairman at Mercury,a Washington D.C. lobbying firm.
