The county is named in honor of the family of Kiliaen van Rensselaer,the original Dutch owner of the land in the area. The county is part of the Capital District region of the state.

The Haskell School was a historic school building located at Troy in Rensselaer County,New York. It was built in 1894 and was a T-shaped,three-story,red brick building on an elevated limestone basement in the Renaissance Revival style. It had a flat roof with a massive metal cornice. It featured a majestic front entrance with a gated arch rising two stories over a tiled vestibule. The arch included the inscription "Haskell School" in a terra cotta frieze. It was used as a school until 1975,then converted to apartments after 1977.

Kearns previously represented the 142nd New York State Assembly District,which spans South Buffalo,half of the city of Lackawanna,West Seneca and Orchard Park,from 2012 to 2017;he has also served on the Buffalo Common Council. The 2022 New York gubernatorial election took place on November 8,2022,to elect the governor and lieutenant governor of New York. Kathy Hochul ascended to the governorship in August 2021,upon Andrew Cuomo's resignation following allegations of sexual harassment. She sought a full term as governor. She appointed Brian Benjamin to the position of lieutenant governor and planned to run alongside him until he too resigned in April 2022. Congressman Antonio Delgado was appointed to replace Benjamin as lieutenant governor. Hochul defeated Jumaane Williams and Tom Suozzi in the Democratic primary for governor,while Delgado defeated Ana Maria Archila and Diana Reyna in the Democratic primary for lieutenant governor.
Jacob Ashby is an American politician and occupational therapist from the state of New York. A Republican,Ashby represents the 43rd district in the New York State Senate since 2023.
Andrew Cuomo,the 56th governor of New York,was accused of sexual harassment by multiple women starting in December 2020,with the accusations covering a range of alleged behavior. He denied all allegations and has apologized for his comments being interpreted as sexually charged. On February 28,2021,New York Attorney General Letitia James announced that she would hire and deputize a law firm to conduct an independent investigation into the allegations. On March 11,the New York State Assembly authorized an impeachment investigation into the allegations. In August 2021,James released an investigatory report that stated that Cuomo sexually harassed 11 women during his time in office,with actions such as unwanted groping,kissing and sexual comments. The controversy surrounding these allegations culminated in Governor Cuomo's resignation from office. Cuomo was replaced by his Lieutenant Governor,Kathy Hochul.
William Patrick Madden is an American politician. He is the Democratic former mayor of Troy,New York. He was elected in 2015 and re-elected in 2019. His term ended December 31,2023.
