The Strand Road drill hall is an arts center and former military installation in Carlisle, Cumbria.
The building was designed as the headquarters of Carlisle Rifle Volunteers on land granted by the Duke of Devonshire [1] and was built between 1873 and 1874. [2] This unit evolved to become the 1st Volunteer Battalion, The Border Regiment in 1883 and the 4th (Cumberland and Westmorland) Battalion, The Border Regiment in 1908. [3] The battalion was mobilised at the drill hall in August 1914 before being deployed to India. [4] [5] The building went on to serve as the head office of the East Cumberland National Shell Factory in September 1915. [6] After the battalion headquarters moved to the Queen Katherine Street drill hall in Kendal, [3] the Strand Road drill hall was decommissioned and then stood vacant for many years before being converted and extended for use as the home of the Carlisle College Digital and Creative Arts Centre which opened at its new premises in September 2014. The Westmorland and Cumberland Yeomanry was a Yeomanry Cavalry Regiment of the British Army that was formed in 1819. The regiment provided troops for the Imperial Yeomanry during the Second Boer War and served on the Western Front in the First World War, latterly as infantry. The regiment converted to artillery in 1920 and served as such in the early years of the Second World War, before becoming part of the Chindits in Burma. Post war it served as a gunner regiment until 1971 when the title disappeared.
The Dalmeny Street drill hall in Edinburgh, was built as a military drill hall in 1901, and between 2003 and 2010 was redeveloped as community arts and education centre under the name TheOut of the Blue Drill Hall. The drill hall is protected as a category A listed building.
