Stuart Liddell MBE (born 12 January 1973) is a Scottish bagpipe player, playing Great Highland bagpipe. As well as competing in solo competitions, he is the Pipe major of the Inveraray and District Pipe Band.

Early life

He was born in Oban on 12 January 1973 and spent his early years in Inveroran, near Bridge of Orchy. His father Billy was an accomplished musician, as is his mother Agnes, and his grandfather was Ronnie McCallum, piper to the Duke of Argyll and a prominent piping tutor. At the age of four the family moved to Moffat in Dumfriesshire where Stuart went to school. The family moved to Inveraray, his mother's home town, in 1983. [1]

For ten years (1998–2008), he played with the Simon Fraser University Pipe Band in Burnaby, British Columbia. [2] With the SFU Pipe band he won three World Pipe Band Championship titles, in 1999, 2001, and 2008. [3] Before joining the SFU Pipe Band, he played with ScottishPower Pipe Band.

Liddell lives in Inveraray and is Pipe major of the Grade 1 Inveraray & District Pipe Band, which he founded in 2003.

Stuart Liddell has won the World Pipe Band Championships as Pipe major of Inveraray & District Pipe Band in 2017, 2019, and 2024.

Solo Prizes

Liddell has won many of the top awards in solo piping, including the Gold Medal at the Argyllshire Gathering (2000), the Gold Medal at the Northern Meeting (2004), [4] the former winner's Clasp at the Northern Meeting (2007 & 2009), [5] the Bratach Gorm at the Scottish Piping Society of London (2009) and

He has won the Glenfiddich Piping Championship three times: 2009, [6] [7] 2014 [8] and 2020. In 2023, Liddell was made a Member of the British Empire (MBE) in King Charles III’s first New Year’s Honours.

He is known for his fast playing and innovative arrangements of piping standards.

Jori Lance Chisholm is an American professional bagpipe player and teacher who lives in Seattle, Washington. Chisholm is a successful solo competitor winning the United States Gold Medal four times and has placed in the top three in Scotland's Argyllshire Gathering Gold Medal competition. He played with the six-time Grade One World Champion Simon Fraser University Pipe Band and was a featured solo performer for the band on multiple occasions. Chisholm has performed in front of sold-out audiences with The Chieftains and with ex-Grateful Dead rocker Bob Weir and his band Ratdog, and has been featured as a soloist or band member on over 20 recordings. His debut solo album Bagpipe Revolution was nominated for Album of the Year by Pipes|Drums magazine. He writes the "Sound Technique" column for the National Piping Centre’s bi-monthly Piping Today Magazine. The New York Times featured Chisholm's online teaching program, BagpipeLessons.com, and described him as a "top-tier teacher" in a front-page story about the growth of Skype music lessons. A cover story in American Profile Magazine named Chisholm one of the "world's elite pipers."

John Davie Burgess was a Scottish bagpipe player.

The Glenfiddich Piping and Fiddle Championships are musical competitions for the bagpipes and fiddle. Both competitions take place annually in late autumn, at the ballroom of Blair Castle at Blair Atholl in Perthshire, Scotland. Entry to each championship is by invitation only, to those who have won various recognised major UK solo competitions held throughout the year.

Roderick (Roddy) MacLeod, MBE is a Scottish bagpiper, director of the annual Piping Live! Festival and former principal of the National Piping Centre.
