Subway Israel (Hebrew : סאבוויי) was a fast food sandwich chain, an international franchise of the U.S.-based Subway. Opening in 1992, they expanded to 23 branches around Israel before they closed in 2004. [1]
In the early 1990s, Subway began expanding their international franchises at a much more rapid pace, with Israel being one of those places. [2]
In 1992 Subway entered Israel for the first time. In 2004, when the original franchisee died, the chain closed their 23 locations. [1]
Although not all restaurants in Israel were kosher, all did refrain from pig products. [3] Not wanting to ostracize itself from the Jewish residents of Israel, Subway did not offer bacon or ham. [4]
Outside of Israel, the only other kosher Subways are located in the United States, which opened its first location in 2006 in a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio. Subway spokesman Jared Fogle attended the opening of the first kosher Subway branch at the Mandel JCC of Cleveland. Subway's press release on the opening stated, "With slight modifications, such as no pork-based products, and the use of soy-based cheese product, the menu is virtually identical to that of any other Subway restaurant." [5]
There had been 11 branches in August 2009, [1] and peaked at 12 branches. [6] Soon after, they began closing, however, and were down to 5 by August 2011. [6]
Many issues have led the US branches to close. One of the main issues is that 4.5% of all sales are paid to Subway corporate for advertising; however, they received no benefits from the advertising since it was not kosher-specific. [7] Additionally, due to the higher cost of kosher meat, non-kosher consumers stayed away due to the lack of participation in the "Five-Dollar Footlong" promotion. [8]
In May 2009 it was announced that a new investor, Gur Gal, [9] had purchased the franchise rights to Subway in Israel. [10] The new investor had rented space in Herzliya and was in talks to rent additional space in on Rothschild Boulevard in Tel Aviv. [9] His plans stated he would eventually open 130 branches around Israel. [9] The new locations never opened, and a lawsuit between Gur Gal and Subway was settled in arbitration, with no details released. [11]
In June 2014, it was once again announced that Subway was looking to return to Israel and was looking for franchises. [12]

Burger King Corporation is an American multinational chain of hamburger fast food restaurants. Headquartered in Miami-Dade County, Florida, the company was founded in 1953 as Insta-Burger King, a Jacksonville, Florida–based restaurant chain. After Insta-Burger King ran into financial difficulties, its two Miami-based franchisees David Edgerton (1927–2018) and James McLamore (1926–1996) purchased the company in 1959 and renamed it "Burger King". Over the next half-century, the company changed hands four times and its third set of owners, a partnership of TPG Capital, Bain Capital, and Goldman Sachs Capital Partners, took it public in 2002. In late 2010, 3G Capital of Brazil acquired a majority stake in the company, in a deal valued at US$3.26 billion. The new owners promptly initiated a restructuring of the company to reverse its fortunes. 3G, along with partner Berkshire Hathaway, eventually merged the company with the Canadian-based doughnut chain Tim Hortons, under the auspices of a new Canadian-based parent company named Restaurant Brands International.
Quiz Holdings, LLC, doing business as Quiznos, is an American franchised fast-food restaurant based in Denver that specializes in offering toasted submarine sandwiches. It was founded in 1981 by Jimmy Lambatos and sold to Rick and Richard Schaden ten years later. It then grew to nearly 5,000 restaurants; by 2013, Quiznos was the second-largest submarine sandwich shop chain in North America, behind Subway. It filed for bankruptcy in 2014; by 2016, it had dropped to ninth place, and the number of Quiznos locations in the United States fell from a 2007 high of 4,700 to just 400 a decade later.

It was founded by Bill Rosenberg (1916–2002) in Quincy, Massachusetts, in 1950. The chain was acquired by Baskin-Robbins's holding company Allied Lyons in 1990; its acquisition of the Mister Donut chain and the conversion of that chain to Dunkin' Donuts facilitated the brand's growth in North America that year. Dunkin' and Baskin-Robbins eventually became subsidiaries of Dunkin' Brands, headquartered in Canton, Massachusetts, in 2004, until being purchased by Inspire Brands on December 15, 2020. The chain began rebranding as a "beverage-led company", and was renamed Dunkin', in January 2019; while stores in the U.S. began using the new name, the company intends to roll out the rebranding to all of its international stores eventually.

As of December 31, 2018, Wendy's was the world's third-largest hamburger fast-food chain with 6,711 locations, following Burger King and McDonald's. On April 24, 2008, the company announced a merger with Triarc Companies Inc., a publicly traded company and the parent company of Arby's. The merger was completed on September 29, 2008. Wendy's headquarters remained in Dublin. Following the merger, Triarc became known as Wendy's/Arby's Group, and later as the Wendy's Company following the sale of Arby's to Roark Capital Group.

Burger King Israel is the Israeli franchise of international fast food chain Burger King. Burger King first entered the Israeli market in 1993. It eventually closed in 2010, after the franchise owner Orgad Holdings purchased local chain Burgeranch and converted all Burger King locations in the country into Burgeranch locations. In July 2013, it was announced that Burger King was attempting to re-enter Israel. Initial discussions with its original Israeli franchise owner Yair Hasson were unsuccessful, and it finally secured re-entrance to the country by entering into a deal with a French company. The first restaurant, under the new franchise group opened in February 2016, at Rabin Square in Tel Aviv. As of 2020, there are 10 branches in the country, including 9 in Tel Aviv and its suburbs, and 1 in Eilat located in Ramon Airport. Out of all these locations, 7 are Kosher branches.

Currently there are 15 branches located in Nazareth, Daliyat al-Karmel, Baqa al-Gharbiyye, Haifa, Rosh Pina, Nof HaGalil, Yarka, Be'er Sheba, Ramla, Ashdod, Umm al-Fahm, Zikhron Ya'akov, Kiryat Bialik, Petah Tikva, and Emek HaYarden. The company has plans to open more locations, including a flagship location in Tel Aviv.
