Suman Ghosh (born 1972) [1] is a film director, [2] and a professor of economics at Florida Atlantic University. [3]
Suman Ghosh gained his B.Sc. in economics from Presidency College, Calcutta and his M.A. in economics from the Delhi School of Economics. He completed his Ph.D. in economics at Cornell University in 2002. His research interests are public economics, personnel economics, and development economics. [4]
Suman Ghosh is a National Award-winning Indian filmmaker who has made Eleven feature films and two documentary film. He had his film training at Cornell University in New York. His first feature film Footsteps, starring Soumitra Chatterjee and Nandita Das, won 2 National Awards in 2008. It was shown at numerous film festivals, including Vancouver, Karlovy Vary and IAAC New York. His second feature film Dwando, also starring Soumitra Chatterjee, was a part of the Indian Panorama at IFFI Goa in 2009. His next feature film Nobel Thief, starring the Indian megastar Mithun Chakraborty, was world premiered at the Busan IFF and was an official selection at the BFI, London Film festival. The film received the "Best Indian Film" award at the Bengaluru International Film Festival in 2012. His latest feature film Shyamal Uncle Turns off the Lights has had a warm reception from critics and audiences all over the world. It was world premiered at the Busan Film Festival in South Korea and had its North American Premiere at the MoMA, NY. It has been shown at a number of international film festivals, including BUSAN IFF, Mumbai FF, Santa Barbara IFF, ReelWorld Film Festival (Toronto), Delhi 010 Digital Film Festival, Freiburger Film Forum (Germany), Indian Film Festival in Stuttgart, Germany and 10th Green Film Festival (Seoul). It won the "Outstanding International Feature Award" at the ReelWorld Film festival in Toronto. The film, based on a true incident, traces the journey of Shyamal Uncle, an eighty-year-old retiree, as he wades through an apathetic system with a seemingly trivial goal – turn off the street lights near his home which are left on even during the day. Colin Burrows is the executive producer and it is being distributed in North America by Global Film Initiative.
Vincent Malausa at Cahiers du Cinéma calls it "extraordinary magic …..leads to one of the most beautiful happy endings we have ever seen" and "The impeccable rhythm and the art with which the director deals with new twists….invite the audience to understand that a true epic is told in the small adventure." Another reviewer notes that "With echoes of Kurosawa’s ‘Ikiru,’ the great 1952 Japanese film about a low level bureaucrat who gets a playground for a neighborhood, and solidly in the tradition of the Indian realism of Satyajit Ray—Pather Panchali and the Apu Trilogy, Suman Ghosh, the writer and director, establishes himself as an important filmmaker in the 21st century."
His next film Kadambari, starring Konkona Sen Sharma and Parambrata Chatterjee, is based on the life of Rabindranath Tagore and his controversial relationship with his sister-in-law Kadambari Devi. Kadambari was a major box office success and was also screened at several film festivals all over the world. It won the Best Film and the Best Actress award for Konkona Sensharma at the Washington DC South Asian Film Festival in 2015. His next released film Peace Haven, starring Soumitra Chatterjee, released in early 2016. The film had its world premier at Busan International Film Festival in Oct 2015 and was a selection at MAMI, Mumbai and New York Indian Film Festival in 2016. He has completed his next feature film in English titled Mi Amor, which was entirely shot in the US. It stars Parambrata Chatterjee and Raima Sen and is scheduled to release in 2017. His most recent film Basu Poribaar (The Bose Family), starring Soumitra Chatterjee, Aparna Sen, Rituparna Sengupta, Jishu Sengupta, Sashwata Chatterjee, Sudipta Chakraborty and others, is releasing soon. He made his foray into Hindi films with Aadhaar. The film is produced by Drishyam Films and Reliance. The film is awaiting a theatrical release. His next film is "Searching for Happiness..." which world premiered at the Miami International Film Festival in March 2021. It is playing in film festivals currently and is scheduled to release in India this year. It stars 4 year old Shahida Neera and Sudipta Chakraborty
SoumitraChatterjee was an Indian film actor, play-director, playwright, writer, thespian and poet. He is regarded as one of the greatest and most influential actors in the history of Indian cinema. He is best known for his collaborations with director Satyajit Ray, with whom he worked in fourteen films.
Tapan Sinha was one of the most prominent Indian film directors of his time forming a legendary quartet with Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak and Mrinal Sen. He was primarily a Bengali filmmaker who worked both in Hindi cinema and Bengali cinema, directing films like Kabuliwala (1957), Louha-Kapat, Sagina Mahato (1970), Apanjan (1968), Kshudhita Pashan and children's film Safed Haathi (1978) and Aaj Ka Robinhood. Sinha started his career in 1946, as a sound engineer with New Theatres film production house in Kolkata, then in 1950 left for England where he worked at Pinewood Studios for next two years, before returning home to start his six decade long career in Indian cinema, making films in Bengali, Hindi and Oriya languages, straddling genres from social realism, family drama, labor rights, to children's fantasy films. He was one of the acclaimed filmmakers of Parallel Cinema movement of India.
Dosar is a 2006 Bengali language Indian drama film. It was produced by Arindam Chaudhuri and directed by Rituparno Ghosh, the black-and-white film won the National Film Award – Special Jury Award / Special Mention for the lead role portrayal by Prosenjit Chatterjee. The movie additionally stars Konkona Sen Sharma, who for her part won the Best Actress Award at the New York Film Festival in 2007. The film was premiered in the 60th 2007 Cannes Film Festival in the Les Cinema Du Monde section. The film was a sleeper hit at the box office.
Atanu Ghosh is an Indian filmmaker. His Bengali film Mayurakshi (2017) was awarded the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Bengali. His film Angshumaner Chhobi, Mayurakshi, Binisutoy, Abby Sen and Rupkatha Noy, bagged multiple Awards.He was born on 12 August 1969 in Kolkata, West Bengal. One of his Bengali movies named Mayurakshi was awarded as the Best Feature Film in Bengali. Atanu started his career as a scriptwriter and director for documentary films in 1996. For his work in Aar Ek Bampi, he received the Doordarshan National Awards for Best Children's Telefilm.
Parambrata Chattopadhyay is an Indian actor and director. Parambrata started his career with Bengali television and films. He has acted as the fictional character Topshe from Feluda under Sandip Ray's direction. His notable works include Bhalo Theko (2003), Baishe Srabon (2011), Sold (2014), Kadambari (2017), Anukul (2017), Pari (2018), Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi (2019), Dwitiyo Purush(2020), Bulbbul (2020) and Doctor Bakshi (2023). He made his Hindi debut in Kahaani (2012), starring with Vidya Balan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui.

Hyderabad Bengali Film Festival (HBFF) is a Bengali film festival in the city of Hyderabad and is being organized annually since 2014. The venue of the festival is the Prasad Film Preview Labs, Hyderabad. The first edition of the film festival was held in the year 2014. It is the only curated Bengali film festival in India.

Aadhaar is a 2019 Indian Hindi-language dramedy film directed by Suman Ghosh. The film is written by Amitosh Nagpal and Suman Ghosh. Amitosh has also written dialogues and lyrics for the film. Produced by Manish Mundra under his banner Drishyam Films, the film stars Vineet Kumar Singh, who is the first one in his village to get his Aadhaar card made. Raghubir Yadav, Saurabh Shukla and Sanjay Mishra appear in supporting roles. The film had its premiere at the 24th Busan International Film Festival under the section 'A Window on Asian Cinema'. It was supposed to be released in India this 5 February 2021, but it was postponed.
