Sumit Hridayesh [1] [2] is an Indian politician and the MLA from Haldwani Assembly constituency. [3] He is a member of the Indian National Congress. [4] 6 criminal cases had been lodged against him as of 2022 , including charges related to rioting, theft, cheating, and assault on public servants. [5]
Hridyesh had contested the Haldwani mayoral election in 2018 as an Indian National Congress candidate but lost to Dr. Jogendra Pal Singh Rautela of the Bharatiya Janata Party by a margin of 10,854 votes. [6] In 2022, he was declared as the Indian National Congress from Haldwani Assembly constituency following the demise of his mother Indira Hridayesh. He won the seat by a margin of 7,814 votes defeating the city's then mayor and rival Dr. Jogendra Pal Singh Rautela of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Hridyesh was in controversy for his alleged role in the 2024 Haldwani riots. [7] Hridayesh's response to the Haldwani riots was criticized for being ambiguous, with some perceiving it as an attempt to justify the violence. His stance has been seen as a testament to the moral complexities in Indian politics. Hridayesh has been accused of trying to politicize communal tensions in Haldwani, rather than addressing the root causes of the issue and his approach has been criticized for prioritizing electoral politics over finding solutions to the problems faced by the people of his constituency. He criticized the state government for installing smart meters and claimed that BJP would lose in the Kedarnath bye-elections. However, instead BJP won the bypoll. Hridayesh raised questions on the syllabus of the PCS exam, highlighting differences between the Hindi and English syllabus, which sparked objections from candidates who appeared for the exam through the Hindi medium. [8] In April 2025, he made a controversial statement by saying that the people of Kashmir are not aligned with India and instead, support Pakistan. [9] [10] Hridyash has repeatedly defended the people who reside in the illegal land (as stated by the government) and has strongly protested the government's action to demolish illegal structures. Critics say he does this as he gets most of his votes from these immigrants . He along with several other leaders were booked in 2025, over the alleged kidnapping of Zila panchayat members in 2025. [11] He along with some other leaders vandalized the Legislative Assembly hall by upturning chairs and tables as a form of protest. Hriyadesh tore official papers, flung them in the air, made paper planes and even uprooted the secretary's microphone. He accused the district administration of supporting the government and demanded that the authorities take back the case filed against him of alleged kidnapping. Hridayesh reiterated these claims in another Facebook Live session, during which he also used offensive language while criticizing the administration. [12] [13] He also accused the ruling party of spying on him by replacing his gunner [14] , though the government brushed aside these claims as false and baseless.
