Sandeep Malani (born 19 November 1971) is an Indian film director, documentary film maker, screenplay writer, and actor. He is the managing director of the production company 'Malani Talkies'. [1]

Early years

Sandeep Malani was born in 1971 to a Roman Catholic family in Mumbai and was raised in Mangalore. Malani himself did his early schooling at the Milagres School in Mangalore. [2] and his BBM at SDM College. Later he did Journalism course at Sandesha, Mangalore. [3] Has been trained Japanese and speaks most of the Indian languages. His mother tongue is Konkani. Malani was a choreographer and a dancer. He organised various events in Mangalore during 1992 to 1996 - all successful under the name 'Malani Presents - Something Special' Malani [4] was a film journalist for The Canara Times,Mangalore [5] and later for a few years in The Times of India,Bangalore. [6] He also was a freelancer film critic for various websites and magazines.

Malani co-directed the Kannada film, Miss California, which was the debut film of actor Diganth. [7]

He has variously served as a TV host for local Mangalorean channels, events organiser, costume designer and directed a few music videos for local channels involving dancers and stage artistes of Mangalore. [8] Malani has acted in a few theatre plays as well. [8]

Malani co-directed the Kannada version of the Tamil film One Two Three starring Prabhu Deva, Raju Sundaram, Prasad and Jyothika. The film was directed by K Subaash.

Sandeep Malani directed the Bollywood Film, 'Woh 5 Din' [9] a suspense thriller shot in Barielly and Nainital with newcomers. Later he directed Kalpana Pandit, Akash Hora and Anant Nag in 'Janleva 555'. [10]

As a Screenwriter, Malani has assisted K Subaash in the writing of Rohit Shetty's film Chennai Express and also wrote the script of 'Hello India' starring Akshay Kumar. [11]

Malani has also been a part of the direction team in Onir's I Am anthology film, working on the "I Am Abhimanyu" and "I Am Omar" segments. [12]

He has directed a variety of short films, some of them covering controversial issues such as AIDS ("Jo Jo Laali – a heart wrenching lullaby") [13] and homosexuality ("Shaayad"). [14] [15] His other short film was made in three languages: "Hum Tum Aur Loan" (Hindi), [16] "Yella Ok, Loan Yaake" (Kannada) and "A Loanly Life" (English). [17]

The Milagres Church is a historic Roman Catholic Church situated in the Hampankatta locality of Mangalore. The church was built in 1680 by Bishop Thomas de Castro, a Theatine from Divar, Goa. The original structure was constructed at the site of the present-day cemetery. It is one of the oldest churches in Dakshina Kannada.

Mangalore district that was partitioned from the erstwhile South Canara, has been multicultural and is a little different from the prevalent culture of the Carnataca state of India. A native of Mangalore is known as a Mangalorean in English, Kudladakulu in Tulu, Kodyaalkar in Konknni, Manglurnavaru in Kannada& Maikaaltanga in Byari.

The culture of Mangalorean Catholics has been shaped by their Christianisation in Goa, their migrations& their captivity. They adopted elements of the local Mangalorean culture, but retained many of their Konkani customs and values. The ethnic Mangalorean houses of the older generation have spacious porticos, red oxide cemented floors, terra cotta roofs layered with the once famous Mangalore tiles. The houses are usually accompanied by their own private wells or ponds, and are normally attached to orchards of coconut trees, jackfruit trees, ice apple trees, Alphonso mango trees, areca nut trees etc.

Mangaloreans are a collection of diverse ethnic groups that hail from the historical locales of South Canara (Tulunaad) on the south western coast of Karnataka, India, particularly the residents native to Mangaluru.

Tulu Nadu State movement is aimed at increasing Tulu Nadu's influence and political power through the formation of separate Tulu Nadu state from Karnataka and Kerala. Tulu Nadu is a region on the south-western coast of India. It consists of the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts of Karnataka and Kasargod district up to the Chandragiri river in Kerala. The Chandragiri River has traditionally been considered a boundary between Tulu Nadu and Kerala from the fourth century AD onwards. The first call for a separate Tulu Nadu state was made just after the Quit India Movement in 1942 by Srinivas Updhyaya Paniyadi, a banker and a press owner from Udupi. Mangalore is the largest and the chief city of Tulu Nadu. Tulu activists have been demanding a separate Tulu Nadu state since the late 2000s, considering language and culture as the basis for their demand.

Kodman Nagappa Alva was an Indian physician and politician from the State of Karnataka. As a politician, he served as Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha, the upper House of the Parliament of India, and as Minister of Health and Family Planning in the Government of Karnataka, then known as Mysore State. He was also prominent medical practitioner in his hometown of Mangalore. His biography with an eponymous title was published in 2010, written by Raghu Shettigar.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Udupi is a diocese located in the Kallianpur town of Udupi District of Karnataka, India. It was announced by Pope Benedict XVI on 16 July 2012. It comprises the six civil talukas Udupi, Bramavara, Karkala, Kapu, Kundapura and Byndoor and is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Bangalore. The diocese now contains 47 parishes, the newly elevated Cathedral which was previously a parish church as "Church of Our Lady of Miracles" or the Milagres Church, the parish was partitioned from the Mangalore Diocese, while the parish church was elevated to the Cathedral of Our Lady of Miracles.

Barke is a Tulu film directed by Bharath Krishna and produced by Suresh Reddy. It stars Ashwin Shetty, Srikanth, Balachandra, Nagaraj, and Riya Meghana in the lead roles. Krishna also wrote the screenplay for the movie. The film is based on a true story.

<i>Bangar Patler</i> 1993 Indian film

Banger Patler is 1993 Tulu-language romantic drama film directed by Dr. Richard Castelino and starring Vaman Raj in the titular role and Sudha Rani.
