Sunstar Entertainment is an independent film production and talent management company, [1] founded in 2011 by Andrew Fraser and Shahen Mekertichian. Sunstar Entertainment operates out of Sydney, Australia. The company has a heavy focus on producing films and television shows based on true Australian stories, including the 2016 film Lion, directed by Garth Davis. [2]

Film Projects

In 2012, Sunstar optioned the rights to Indian-born Australian businessman Saroo Brierley’s book, A Long Way Home, [3] which was co-written by Australian author Larry Buttrose. In 2013, Sunstar Entertainment partnered with See-Saw Films to adapt the book into a film titled Lion, directed by Garth Davis and starring Dev Patel, Nicole Kidman, Rooney Mara and David Wenham. [4] Lion was co-produced by Sunstar Entertainment, See-Saw Films, Aquarius Films, Screen Australia and The Weinstein Company. [5] Founders of Sunstar Entertainment Andrew Fraser and Shahen Mekertichian were Executive Producers on the film. [6]

The film premiered at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival where it received early Oscar buzz [7] [8] and was released for international distribution by The Weinstein Company on November 25, 2016. [9]

In 2013 Sunstar Entertainment was announced as a producer on True Spirit, a film about the true story of Australian sailor Jessica Watson who became the youngest person to sail solo around the world non stop at the age of 16. [10] The film is due to be released in 2020. [11]

In 2015, Sunstar Entertainment optioned the rights to the story of Australian athlete John Maclean. [12] John became a paraplegic following a truck accident and was the first person in a wheelchair to compete in the Ironman World Championship and swim the English Channel. [13]

Sunstar Entertainment represents a number of Australian sporting identities and celebrities, including around the world sailor, Jessica Watson [14] and Australian cricketer, Mitchell Starc [15] and Australian sportswoman Ellyse Perry. [16] [17]

Awarded during the Australian Cricket Awards, the Allan Border Medal is considered to be the most prestigious individual prize in Australian men's cricket. First awarded in 2000, the medal is named after former Australian men's captain Allan Border and recognises the most outstanding male Australian cricketer of the past season as voted by his peers, the media and umpires. Votes are cast after each game on a 3–2–1 basis, with a weighting applied to give both One Day International and Test players an equal chance of winning the award.

Jessica Watson Australian sailor (born 1993)

Jessica Watson is an Australian sailor who was awarded the Order of Australia Medal after attempting a solo circumnavigation at the age of 16. Although her voyage did not meet the distance criterion of 21,600 nautical miles (40,000 km) for a circumnavigation, Watson was nevertheless named the 2011 Young Australian of the Year and awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2012 for "...service to sailing and to youth through the achievement of sailing solo and unassisted around the world [sic], and as a role model for young Australians". She currently resides in Melbourne. Netflix produced a film, True Spirit (2023), about Watson's voyage.

Prey is a 2007 South African adventure thriller horror film written by Jeff Wadlow, Beau Bauman, and Darrell Roodt. The film was directed by Roodt. At a South African game reserve, a woman and her two stepchildren are trapped inside a car by a pride of hungry lions. Prey stars Bridget Moynahan, Peter Weller and Carly Schroeder.

Killing Time is an Australian television drama series on TV1 subscription television channel which first screened in 2011. It is based on the true story of disgraced lawyer Andrew Fraser. In New Zealand it screens on Prime Television.

<i>Escape from Planet Earth</i> 2013 film by Cal Brunker

Escape from Planet Earth is a 2013 animated comedy-adventure science fiction film produced by Rainmaker Entertainment and distributed by The Weinstein Company in the United States and Entertainment One in Canada, directed by Cal Brunker, with a screenplay which he co-wrote with Bob Barlen, and features an ensemble voice cast that includes Rob Corddry, Brendan Fraser, Sarah Jessica Parker, William Shatner, Jessica Alba, Jane Lynch, Craig Robinson, George Lopez, Sofía Vergara, Steve Zahn, Chris Parnell, Jonathan Morgan Heit, and Ricky Gervais. The film was released on February 15, 2013, to mostly negative reviews from critics and grossed $74.6 million on a budget of $40 million.

The film is based on the 2010 memoir of the same name by Jessica Watson, played by Teagan Croft. She is an Australian sailor who was awarded the Order of Australia Medal and is on the Australian Sailing Hall of Fame after attempting a solo global circumnavigation at the age of 16. The film was made available for streaming on Netflix on 3 February 2023.
