Super Unison was an American post-hardcore band that formed in 2014. The band's name was derived from the song of the same name released on 90s post-hardcore band Drive Like Jehu's second studio album Yank Crime . [1] Vocalist Meghan O'Neil Pennie describes the band's early material as "a weird intersection of Dischord Records and riot grrrl." The band has self-released an EP and released their debut studio album Auto through Deathwish Inc. in 2016. The band announced their dissolution in September of 2019.

History

Following the release of Punch's 2014 third studio album They Don't Have to Believe, vocalist Meghan O'Neil Pennie was asked to join a new band featuring Justin Renninger of Snowing and former Dead Seeds members Danny Goot and Kevin DeFranco. [1] Super Unison held its first practice in December 2014, recorded an EP in February 2015 then released it in May 2015. [1] Some of the lyrics on this EP subtly referenced the end of Punch. [2]

On October 14, 2016, Super Unison released its debut album titled Auto through Jacob Bannon of Converge's indie label Deathwish Inc. who previously released albums for Punch. Auto was produced by Jack Shirley (Deafheaven, Oathbreaker, Loma Prieta). [3] Super Unison began promoting the album with an online stream of "Broken," which O'Neil Pennie says is about self-preservation. She elaborated: "Sometimes you have to walk away from something that's not good for you, despite the pressures of obligation and guilt. Some people may not understand, but you know your own feelings better than anyone." [3] Super Unison toured the US in support of the album in October 2016. [4] Michael Pementel of PopMatters gave the album eight-out-of-ten stars and stayed: "Many were upset with the break-up of Punch and Meghan O'Neil Pennie's departure, but those folks will be happy to know that Super Unison is far more than just a strong return; it's a memorable one, too. Super Unison continues to carry the torch for those who want to find their place in an art form that, on the surface, may appear to be a boy's club, but contains rage and power for everyone from all walks of life." [5]

As a part of Adult Swim and Williams Street Records' "Single Program", Super Unison released the non-album single "Orchids" in September 2017. [6]

Super Unison released its second studio album Stella through Deathwish on October 26, 2018. Stella was recorded by Steve Albini (Nirvana, The Jesus Lizard), produced by Don Devore (Ink & Dagger, The Icarus Line) and mastered by Jack Shirley. [7]

Gouge Away is an American hardcore punk band based in Florida that formed in 2012. The band is influenced by post-hardcore and noise rock bands such as The Pixies, the Jesus Lizard, Fugazi, Unwound, the Plot to Blow Up the Eiffel Tower and Nirvana. Gouge Away released its debut album , Dies in 2016 to underground acclaim, and released its second album Burnt Sugar through Deathwish Inc. in 2018.

He has been the drummer for the bands Shelter, Piebald, Good Clean Fun, Bloodhorse, 454 Big Block, Saves The Day, Cold Cave, but is best known as the drummer for hardcore/punk band American Nightmare. Harm's Way is an American straight edge hardcore punk band from Chicago, Illinois, formed in 2006. The band started as a side project, but ended up becoming a more serious and full-time band in their later years. Harm's Way has since released four studio albums: Reality Approaches (2009), Isolation (2011) and Rust (2015) and several EPs. On February 9, 2018, the band released their critically acclaimed Metal Blade Records debut, titled Posthuman. They have been recognized for their unique blend of metal, industrial, and hardcore music.

Self Portrait is the fifth studio album by the American hardcore punk band Loma Prieta. The Jack Shirley-produced album was released on CD, cassette and digital platforms by Deathwish Inc. on October 2, 2015, followed by a vinyl release on November 13 also by Deathwish. In a press release, Self Portrait was described as featuring "unorthodox melodies amid a tangle of pensive, despondent vocals" inspired by the California hardcore bands Funeral Diner and Mohinder, among others.

Jack Shirley is an American record producer, audio engineer and musician. He is known for his analog driven aesthetic, and work with eclectic artists, including Deafheaven, whose 2013 sophomore album Sunbather received widespread critical acclaim. Shirley also worked with various other music acts, including Jeff Rosenstock, Loma Prieta, Bosse-de-Nage, Punch, Whirr, Shinobu, La Bella, State Faults and Frameworks. Besides his production work, he plays guitar for the bands Comadre and Everybody Row.

Vorvaň is a Russian hardcore punk/metal band originally from Moscow, formed in 2009. They are known for mixing different styles of extreme music, continuously experimenting with compositions, melodics and sound.

<i>Burnt Sugar</i> (album) 2018 studio album by Gouge Away

Burnt Sugar is the second studio album by the American rock band Gouge Away. The album was released on September 28, 2018 through Deathwish Inc. Burnt Sugar was co-produced by Jeremy Bolm of Touché Amoré and Jack Shirley, and was recorded live to 2" analog recording tape at Shirley's Atomic Garden studio in April 2018. Gouge Away promoted the album with music videos for the tracks "Only Friend", "Ghost" and "Hey Mercy".
