Surendra pal Joshi was an Indian artist known for his use of experimental techniques in paintings, sculptures and murals. [1] [2] [3] His works are in the collection of Uttara Museum of Contemporary Art in Dehradun, India. [2] [4]
Surendra pal Joshi was born on 23 July 1955 in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. In 1980, he joined Lucknow College of Arts and Crafts in Uttar Pradesh and completed his bachelor’s degree in fine arts afterwards. [1] [3]
Surendra pal Joshi moved to Jaipur and later in 1988 started working as an assistant professor at the Rajasthan School of Art. [1] [3] In 2008, he took voluntary retirement (VRS) from work and continued working on paintings. [3] [4] Joshi had done 22 solo exhibitions in his time and created several murals. [1] [3] [4] His abstract paintings and murals have received many awards at national and international levels. [1] Some of his designed murals are displayed at places like Indian Oil Corporation in New Delhi, Hindustan Unilever in Mumbai, and Shipping Corporation of India in Visakhapatnam. In 1997, Joshi received fellowship from Britain to design murals in Cardiff, UK. [3] [4]
In 2015, Joshi started working at Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority building complex in Dehradun to give shape to the state's first art museum, Uttara Museum of Contemporary Art. The museum was inaugurated by state’s Chief Minister in late 2017, a few months before Joshi’s demise. [3] [4] The museum includes his sculptures, paintings, murals, installations, digital-print photographs, and videos constituting his reflections and responses to the devastation and rescue efforts he had witnessed during visits to the ravaged mountains in the aftermath of the 2013 North India floods. Joshi was married to his wife Sangeeta. They have two children, son Parichay and daughter Tanya. [1] [5] [3] Joshi died on 12 June 2018 while battling cancer at a private hospital in Jaipur. It came as a shock for several people in the artist community. [1]

He left the Congress party and joined the Bahujan Samaj Party in 2022.
Charanjeet Kaushal is an Uttarakhand politician belongs to Indian National Congress. He served as the Councillor from Govindgarh ward of Dehradun Municipal Corporation (2013–18). He is continuously serving as the General Secretary of Dehradun Congress since 2010. In 2013 Dehradun Municipal Corporation election, he defeated veteran BJP leader Surendra Singh Kukreja with a margin of 262 votes.

The Uttara Museum of Contemporary Art (UMCA), located at MDDA Complex in Dehradun, is Uttarakhand’s first art museum dedicating multi-dimensional artworks in the memory of the 2013 North India floods (Kedarnath disaster). The museum exhibits various aspects of the calamity and the folk culture of Uttarakhand through paintings, sculptures, and other artworks by artist Surendra Pal Joshi. It also includes an art gallery encouraging younger generation of artists to exhibit modern and contemporary art. The museum is located in one of the Earthquake zones of India and is housed in a specially constructed building to withstand high intensity earthquake and extreme weather conditions.

Tehsil Tyuni is a tehsil, or administrative division, in the Dehradun district of the Indian state of Uttarakhand. Gopal Damodar Deuskar was an Indian painter, best remembered for his portraits and murals of notable Indian royalty, politicians, and diplomats. A graduate of the Sir J. J. School of Art and the Royal Academy of London, his murals are displayed at the Bal Gandharva Ranga Mandir and the Tilak Smarak Ranga Mandir. His portraits have been displayed at the New Parliament House, New Delhi, the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the Victoria Memorial, Kolkata, Bombay High Court, the Supreme Court of India, India House, London, and the Nehru Centre Art Gallery. A proponent of the Gurukul painting method, Raghuveer Bharam was his student.
