Sharad Govindrao Pawar is an Indian politician. He has served as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra for four terms and has also served in the Union Council Of Ministers as the Minister of Defence in the Cabinet of P.V Narsimha Rao and Minister of Agriculture in the Cabinet of Manmohan Singh. He is the first and current president of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP),which he founded in 1999,after separating from the Indian National Congress. His NCP was split by his own nephew,Ajit Pawar. He leads the NCP delegation in the Rajya Sabha,the upper chamber of the Indian parliament. He is the chairperson of Maha Vikas Aghadi,a regional Maharashtra-based political alliance.

In July 2023,majority of the elected MLAs and MLCs of the party led by Ajit Pawar joined the National Democratic Alliance government,however,all MPs except two are expected to remain loyal to Sharad Pawar. This caused a direct split between the Ajit Pawar-led NCP Faction and the Founder and President of the party Sharad Pawar.

Rahul Narwekar is an Indian politician and member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He is the current speaker of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. Narwekar was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Council in June 2016 as a Governor's Nominated member. Previously,he was a member of the Shiv Sena party,but as the party denied him a ticket in 2014 Lok Sabha elections,he joined the Nationalist Congress Party and unsuccessfully contested the Lok Sabha election on the party's ticket from the Maval constituency. Rahul is the sitting MLA from Colaba in Mumbai on a Bhartiya Janata Party ticket. He is Speaker of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on 3 July 2022 and he is the second-youngest person to be elected speaker of any state in the country,the youngest being Shivraj Patil. In May 2023,he completed a 4-day UK tour speaking at the Ideas for India Conference organised by Bridge India in London,and speaking with students at Cambridge University. His tour attracted media attention because of its proximity to the Supreme Court judgement on the disqualification of 16 MLAs of the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena.
The 2019 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly election was held on 21 October 2019 to elect all 288 members of the state's Legislative Assembly. After a 61.4% turnout in the election,the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena (SHS) won a majority. Following differences over the government formation,the alliance was dissolved,precipitating a political crisis.
The Maha Vikas Aghadi or Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi,abbreviated as MVA,is a state-level political coalition formed after the 2019 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly election under the leadership of Uddhav Thackeray of SHS (UBT),then Shiv Sena,Sharad Pawar of the NCP and Sonia Gandhi of the INC,along with the support from the Samajwadi Party,PWPI,CPI(M) and several other political parties including Independent MLAs.
