Assembly elections was held in Maharashtra, India in two phases on September 5, 1999, and September 11, 1999. [2] Election results were declared on October 7, 1999. The major parties were Bharatiya Janata Party - Shiv Sena (Yuti) alliance, Congress and NCP. Congress and NCP contested against each other without a pre-poll alliance but came together for a post-poll alliance to stake claim to form the government.Vilasrao Deshmukh of Congress became Chief Minister, and NCP's Chhagan Bhujbal became Deputy CM. [3]
Lok Sabha elections were held simultaneously, and in them, the BJP-Sena alliance fared better winning 28/48, with Shiv Sena winning 15 seats, BJP 13 seats, Congress 10 seats, and NCP 6 seats.

Shiv Sena was a right-wing Marathi regionalist and Hindu ultranationalist political party in India founded in 1966 by Bal Thackeray, who was later succeeded by Uddhav Thackeray. Initially apolitical, the organisation was patronised by the then Chief Minister Vasantrao Naik who used it for curbing trade unions and maintain stranglehold of the Congress. The organisation at the same time carried out pro-Marathi nativist movement in Mumbai in which it agitated for preferential treatment for the Marathi people over migrants from other parts of India.
Sharadchandra Govindrao Pawar was an Indian politician. He has served as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra for four terms and has also served in the Union Council of Ministers as the Minister of Defence in the Cabinet of P.V. Narsimha Rao and Minister of Agriculture in the Cabinet of Manmohan Singh. He is the first and former president of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), "which he founded in 1999, after separating from the Indian National Congress". His faction of the NCP was split by his nephew, Ajit Pawar. He leads his faction of the NCP in the Rajya Sabha, the upper chamber of the Indian parliament. The Nationalist Congress Party is one of the state parties in India. It refers to the Ajit Pawar faction after the 2023 split in the party when the Supreme Court of India granted the original party name and symbol to the Nationalist Congress Party. It was one of the major political parties in Maharashtra and was a recognised state party in Nagaland and Kerala. In July 2023, majority of the elected MLAs and MLCs of the party led by Ajit Pawar joined the National Democratic Alliance government, however, all MPs except two remained loyal to Sharad Pawar. This caused a direct split between the Ajit Pawar-led faction and the founder and president Sharad Pawar who formed the Nationalist Congress Party after EC recognised the Ajit Pawar faction as the original party.
The National Democratic Alliance is a right-wing Indian political group led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). It was founded on 15 May 1998 and currently controls the government of India as well as the government of 19 Indian states and one Union territory.

Narayan Tatu Rane is an Indian politician and Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha from Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg. He was former Chief Minister of Maharashtra. He former serves as Minister of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises in the Second Modi ministry. He has previously held Cabinet Ministry positions for Industry, Port, Employment and Self-employment; Revenue; and Industry in the Government of Maharashtra.

It consists of 288 members directly elected from single-seat constituencies. The Assembly meets at Vidhan Bhavan in Mumbai, though the winter session is held in Nagpur. Along with the Maharashtra Legislative Council, it comprises the legislature of Maharashtra. The presiding officer of the Assembly is the Speaker. Members of the Assembly are directly elected by the people of Maharashtra through elections held every five years, unless the Assembly is dissolved earlier. The 2014 Indian general election in Maharashtra was held in three phases on 10, 17 and 24 April 2014.
Local elections were held in Maharashtra in four phases, to select the 4,750 members of the 192 municipal councils and 20 Nagar Panchayat. Results were announced the day after each round of voting. The first phase took place on 27 November and saw the BJP emerge as the largest party in municipal councils, winning control of 53 of the 147 councils and winning 857 of the 3,417 seats. The 2019 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly election was held on 21 October 2019 to elect all 288 members of the state's Legislative Assembly. After a 61.4% turnout in the election, the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena (SHS) won a majority. Following differences over the government formation, the alliance was dissolved, precipitating a political crisis.
The 2019 Indian general election in Maharashtra was held in April 2019. These were held for 48 seats in 4 phases; 11 April, 18 April, 23 April and 29 April 2019.
A political crisis in the Indian state of Maharashtra occurred on 21 October 2019 after the declaration of results of the 2019 legislative assembly election over the formation of a new state government. The incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party Shiv Sena alliance crossed the majority of 145 seats needed in the assembly by winning a total of 161 seats in the alliance. Individually BJP won 105 and SHS won 56 seats. The Opposition INC-NCP Alliance with 106 seats did not reach the majority mark. Individually INC won 44 and NCP won 54 seats.
The Maha Vikas Aghadi, is a state-level political coalition formed after the 2019 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly election under the leadership of Uddhav Thackeray of SHS (UBT), Sharad Pawar of the NCP and Sonia Gandhi of the INC, along with the support from the Samajwadi Party, PWPI, CPI(M) and several other political parties including Independent MLAs. MVA is currently the official opposition in Maharashtra Legislature.

The Bharatiya Janata Party contested the 2014 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly election independently on 260 seats after it broke up its 25 year old alliance with the Shiv Sena.
