The Peasants and Workers Party of India (PWP) is a Marxist political party in Maharashtra, India. The party was founded in 1948, [6] having its roots from the pre-Independence period and has around 10,000 members. [7] The influence of the party is largely limited to three districts. The party was founded in Maharashtra by Keshavrao Jedhe of Pune, Shankarrao More, Bhausaheb Raut of Mumbai, Nana Patil of Satara, Tulshidas Jadhav of Solapur, Dajiba Desai of Belgaum, Madhavrao Bagal of Kolhapur, P K Bhapkar and Datta Deshmukh of Ahmednagar, Vithalrao Hande and others. A former member of the Legislative Council of Maharashtra, [10] Jayant Prabhakar Patil is general secretary of the party. The party has 1 MLA and no MLC. [5] The party has a strong hold on Raigad District as well as party has Zilla Parishad members in 6 districts of Maharashtra, namely Raigad, Solapur, Nashik, Nagpur, Nanded and Parabhani.

The student organization of the party is called Purogami Yuvak Sanghatna.

The trade union of the party is called All India Workers Trade Union, All India Insurance Workers Union and its Trade Union Federation is Progressive Workers and Peasants of India. Comrade Janardan Singh is General Secretary of these trade unions and trade union federation. The party has played a very important role in Samyukta Maharashtra Movement under the leadership of Bhausaheb Raut, Uddhavrao Patil, Dajiba Desai. Most important meetings of this movement and coordination took place at the Mumbai -Koliwadi, Girgaum bungalow of Shri Bhausaheb Raut.

In the 2014 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly election at age 88, Ganpatrao Deshmukh of the party won the Sangole constituency for record 11th time with 94,374 votes, defeating Shahajibapu Patil of Shiv Sena by 25,224 votes, while the NCP did not field a candidate against him. [11] [12] [13]

Strength in Maharashtra Legislative Assembly

For the 14th Maharashtra Legislative Assembly 2019, the party fielded 24 candidates out of which Shyamsundar Dagdoji Shinde won the Loha Assembly constituency seat by a margin of 64,362 votes. This makes Shinde the only Member of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly (MLA) from PWP.

Keshavrao Marutirao Jedhe (Deshmukh) (21 April 1896 – 12 November 1959) also known as Keshavrao Jedhe was an Indian independence activist and politician from Pune. He served as a leading figure in the Indian National Congress, and in the Samyukta Maharashtra movement during the independence. The famous Swargate chowk in Pune is named after him.

Maharashtra is India's third largest state by area and has over 112 million inhabitants. The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly is the lower house of the bicameral legislature of Maharashtra state in western India. It consists of 288 members directly elected from single-seat constituencies. The Assembly meets at Vidhan Bhavan in Mumbai, though the winter session is held in Nagpur. Along with the Maharashtra Legislative Council, it comprises the legislature of Maharashtra. The presiding officer of the Assembly is the Speaker. The Kamgar Kisan Paksha was a political party in Bombay State, India. The party was formed by a group of dissidents from the Peasants and Workers Party of India in November 1951, just before the 1951-1952 elections. The founders of Kamgar Kisan Paksha wanted closer cooperation with the Communist Party of India. Its main leaders were Nana Patil, Datta Deshmukh and D.S. Wagh.

Although a parliamentary democracy, Indian politics has increasingly become dynastic, possibly due to the absence of a party organization, independent civil society associations that mobilize support for the party, and centralized financing of elections. Family members have also led the Congress party for most of the period since 1978 when Indira Gandhi floated the then Congress(I) faction of the party. It also is fairly common in many political parties in Maharashtra. The dynastic phenomenon is seen from national level down to district level and even village level.The three-tier structure of Panchayati Raj established in the 1960s also helped to create and consolidate the dynastic phenomenon in rural areas. Apart from government, political families also control cooperative institutions, mainly cooperative sugar factories, district cooperative banks in the state, and since the 1980s private for profit colleges. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party also features several senior leaders who are dynasts. In Maharashtra, the NCP has particularly high level of dynasticism.

Ganpatrao Deshmukh was an Indian politician. He was in office for 54 years. He was called "Abasaheb" by the people with love and affection. He was also called "Bhai" by peasants and workers.

Shahajibapu Patil is an Indian politician serving as Member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from Sangola Vidhan Sabha constituency as a member of Shiv Sena. He has a degree in law. He was member of Indian National Congress and became MLA for the first Time in 1995 after defeating strong Ganpatrao Deshmukh of Peasants and Workers Party of India.

Walva (वाळवा) Vidhan Sabha seat was one of the constituencies of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, in India. Walva seat existed until the 2004 elections after which most of the area under it was included in a new constituency named Islampur.

Dhairyashil Mohan Patil is an Indian politician who is serving as Rajya Sabha member from Maharashtra since August 2024. Prior to that, he previously served as member of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly for Pen constituency between 2009 and 2019.
