The Surfer Joe Summer Festival, also known as SJSF, is an annual music festival dedicated to surf music organized by Surfer Joe Music that is held in Livorno, Italy.
The multi-day event features live performances from surf and instrumental bands from all over the world on multiple stages, symposia and workshops dedicated to the history and techniques of surf music, displays of historic musical instruments, movie screenings, musician meet and greets, dancing to DJs, and a shopping marketplace. [1]
The festival was created and founded in 2003 [2] by Lorenzo Valdambrini (aka Surfer Joe ), who went on to organize the first two editions.
After a 4 year break, in 2008, Lorenzo's brother Luca Valdambrini encouraged relaunching the event and formed the official cultural association Surfer Joe Music , which would organize the event moving forward.
Since 2012, the festival has taken place at, and outside, of Surfer Joe’s Diner [3] on Livorno's seafront promenade, Terrazza Mascagni.
Massimo Ponte writes: "The SJSF is considered the largest surf music event on this planet". [3]
John Blair mentions it in his book Southern California surf music, 1960-1966: "Today, surf instrumental bands are all over the planet. There is a sizeable core audience that grows every year. Several websites are devoted to this music, and large surf music festivals are held annually in places such as Orange County (SG101 Convention), Italy (Surfer Joe Summer Fest) [...]. You do not have to search very far to find surf music these days". [4]
Timothy J. Cooley mentions the festival in his book Surfing about music: "In spring 2002, Valdambrini created the web site surferjoemusic.com to promote the Italian Surf Music scene. Then in the winter of 2003, he began producing shows featuring bands playing Surf Music at several venues in Italy, followed by a series of Surfin' Sundays events that paired Italian and International bands. The summer was rounded out with the first Summer Festival of Surf Music, held on the beach of Marina di Massa, a small town north of Pisa" [5]
Kent Crowley writes in his book Surf beat: rock 'n' roll's forgotten revolution: "Ten years later, surf music attained a new measure of respect abroad when an Italian enthusiast named Lorenzo Valdambrini established an annual international festival. Named after the Surfaris song, the Surfer Joe Summer Festival has for nearly a decade celebrated California's first modern indigenous folk music..." [6]
The Florentine mentions: "If you feel like taking a ride on an energy wave of epic proportions, head over to Livorno for the world’s number one surf music event! This beautiful stretch of Tuscan coast will become the setting of an intense four-day program of concerts, seminars and various attractions, all free of charge." [7]
A German Surf Travel Blog writes, that the Surfer Joe Summer Festival is the biggest event for surf music worldwide with over 10.000 visitors. A music genre that has its roots in the surf culture of California in the 1960s and got famous thanks to the Beach Boys. Instrumental Rock'n'Roll with pumping riffs that sounds like waves and wanderlust are rolling in. "Mit über 10.000 Besuchern ist das Surfer Joe Summer Festival weltweit das größte Event für Surf Musik – ein Musikgenre, das in den 60ern mit der Surfkultur Kaliforniens entstand und durch die Beach Boys berühmt geworden ist. Instrumental Rock’n Roll mit pumpenden Riffs, der nach einrollenden Wellen und Fernweh klingt." [8]
One Step 4ward writes in its article Surf’s up: Summer’s best surfing and music festivals about the 2014 edition: "Italy may not be as renowned for its surf scene as, say Sagres in Portugal or Cornwall in England, but that doesn’t stop the Surfer Joe Summer Festival from bringing together some of the best surf culture musicians in the business. Held from June 20 to 22 in Livorno, the festival is a three-day immersion into instrumental surf music. There’s also the chance to see a huge private Fender guitar collection with instruments made from the 40s to the 70s." [9]
An article of The Two River Times about the Asbury Park Surf Music Festival mentions the Surfer Joe Summer Festival as "one of the biggest surf music festivals in the world." [10]
The festival has been mentioned on National Today's article International Surf Music Month – June 2023: "On International Surf Music Month, surf music enthusiasts unite in a shared love for the genre. Concerts and events pop up everywhere — not just in the U.S. but also in places such as Canada, Mexico, and Italy. [...] 2003 Surfer Joe Summer Festival Lorenzo Valdambrini organizes the first edition of the Surfer Joe Summer Festival in Italy." [11]

Surf music is a genre of rock music associated with surf culture, particularly as found in Southern California. It was especially popular from 1958 to 1964 in two major forms. The first is instrumental surf, distinguished by reverb-heavy electric guitars played to evoke the sound of crashing waves, largely pioneered by Dick Dale and the Del-Tones. The second is vocal surf, which took elements of the original surf sound and added vocal harmonies, a movement led by the Beach Boys.
David Lee Marks is an American guitarist who was an early member of the Beach Boys. While growing up in Hawthorne, California, Marks was a neighborhood friend of the original band members and was a frequent participant at their family get-togethers. Following his departure from the group, Marks fronted the Marksmen and performed and recorded as a session musician.

It reached number 2 in the US during a chart stay of 78 weeks, eventually being certified gold by the RIAA, and brought the group newfound national success. It was led by one single, its title track with the B-side "Shut Down". In the UK, the album was released in late 1965 and reached number 17.
Surfer Girl is the third studio album by the American rock band the Beach Boys, released September 16, 1963 on Capitol Records. It is largely a collection of surf songs. The LP reached number 7 in the U.S. and number 13 in the UK. Lead single "Surfer Girl", backed with "Little Deuce Coupe", was also a top 10 hit.
The Honeys were an American girl group, formed in Los Angeles in 1958, that initially comprised sisters Marilyn, Diane, and Barbara Rovell. Barbara was later replaced by their cousin, Ginger Blake. After 1962, the Rovell Sisters were rechristened "the Honeys" by the Beach Boys' Brian Wilson, who envisioned the group as a female counterpart to his band. Wilson served as the Honeys' record producer and chief songwriter, and later married Marilyn in late 1964.

The California sound is a popular music aesthetic that originates with American pop and rock recording artists from Southern California in the early 1960s. At first, it was conflated with the California myth, an idyllic setting inspired by the state's beach culture that commonly appeared in the lyrics of commercial pop songs. Later, the sound was expanded outside its initial geography and subject matter and was developed to be more sophisticated, often featuring studio experimentation.
"Church Key" is an instrumental single that was released by California surf group The Revels on Tony Hilder's Impact Records label in 1960. It was a hit for the group and later a hit for Dave Myers and his Surf-Tones.
The Insect Surfers are an American band formed in Washington, D.C. in 1979. The group bills itself "Planet Earth’s Longest-Running Modern Surf Band," and has been based out of Los Angeles, California since 1986. Inspired by the psychedelic surf sounds of the 1960s, their instrumental music is propelled by the energy of the punk movement that surrounded them at birth. Founder David Arnson has been the mainstay of the band's sound through numerous personnel changes over the decades. They are sometimes grouped into the category of "second wave" surf, the first wave being that of the 1960s originators, and the third wave being the scores of bands inspired by mid-1990s interest sparked by the soundtrack of Quentin Tarantino's movie Pulp Fiction. Insect Surfers have performed shows all over the US and Europe. Their music has appeared in videos and television shows, and along with a score of their own releases they have been featured on dozens of compilations. While only about a third of their music lacked vocals during their DC incarnations, after Arnson relocated to Los Angeles the band shifted focus to perform primarily instrumental tunes.

"Exotic" is a song composed by Bruce Morgan and recorded by various bands back in 1963 when it was first released.
"Surfin' U.S.A." is a song by the American rock band the Beach Boys, credited to Chuck Berry and Brian Wilson. It is a rewritten version of Berry's "Sweet Little Sixteen" set to new lyrics written by Wilson and an uncredited Mike Love. The song was released as a single on March 4, 1963, backed with "Shut Down". It was then placed as the opening track on their album of the same name.
Surfer Joe is an Italian surf instrumental band from Livorno, Italy and the pseudonym of the guitarist and songwriter of the group, Lorenzo Valdambrini. Long a regularly used nickname, Valdambrini adopted the stage name officially in 2011, when he returned to Italy from living on the island of Antigua and decided to go solo and break away from his previous band, Wadadli Riders. The name was also adopted by a retro American-style diner opened by Valdambrini and his brother Luca in Livorno called Surfer Joe Diner. This diner would eventually become the host location for the largest surf music festival in the world, the Surfer Joe Summer Festival, which was also based upon the stage name of Valdambrini. He is also active as a specialty producer for this unique niche genre of music, and has worked on projects for Reverberati, Paul Johnson, Rev. Hank and The Bradipos IV.
