Suriname is scheduled to compete at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile from October 20 to November 5, 2023. This was Suriname's 14th appearance at the Pan American Games, having competed at every Games since 1971.

Contents

The Surinamese team consisted of six athletes competing in four sports. [1] [2] Swimmers Irvin Hoost and Kaeylin Djoparto were the country's flagbearers during the opening ceremony. [3] Cyclist Jaïr Tjon En Fa won Suriname's first medal since the 1999 Pan American Games in Winnipeg, Canada, representing a span of 24 years. [4]

Badminton

Suriname qualified one male athlete. [5] [6] Soren Opti, Suriname's only representative in the sport, won his first match before losing to number one seed Brian Yang of Canada. [7]

He competed in the sprint event at the 2013 UCI Track Cycling World Championships and also at the 2016 UCI Track Cycling World Championships – Men's sprint where he reached the 1/16th Final. At the 2017 UCI Track Cycling World Championships – Men's sprint he reached the 1/8th Final. He participated at the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games in Veracruz, Mexico and won bronze in the Elite Sprint. He participated in the 2015 Pan Am Games in Toronto, Ontario, Canada where he was ranked 9th in the Men's Sprint and 6th in the Men's Keirin.

Sören Hans Brad Opti is a badminton player from Suriname. He is a two time Olympian, respresenting Suriname at the 2016 Rio Olympics and at the 2024 Paris Olympics. He was also selected to represent his country at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, but had to stay home due to a positive Covid-test. During the opening ceremony of the 2016 Olympics, Opti was the flagbearer for Suriname. Opti participated in the 2014 and 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games.
