Susanne Stemmer (born 1973) is an Austrian visual artist, director and photographer. [1] [2] [3]

Life and work

Stemmer was born in Feldkirch, Austria. She became a professional photographer in her early adulthood. [4]

After her matura in 1992 she went to Afram Plains District in Ghana to work in development aid, followed by being a photographer on a cruise ship and opening her first photographic studio in Vienna in 2005. [1] Later, alongside her job as a commercial fashion photographer for companies such as Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Swarovski, she started developing her artistic style, especially in her free works. [4] Her most famous works were created in the world of artistic underwater photography where she stages the depicted characters in dreamy, seemingly weightless underwater worlds to create a feeling of freedom, self-reflection and detachment from reality. [5] [1] [6] She achieves these effects, for example, through long durations of exposure and playing with natural and artificial lighting. [7]

In addition to exhibitions at biennales and festivals, Stemmer also presents her works in solo exhibitions worldwide, for instance in her pop-up galleries in Vienna and Paris, where her photography is shown for one day only. [8] [4] In her video installations, which are projected in large format on facades, the focus is on underwater visuals too, such as her work Beneath, presented on the occasion of Venice Biennale 2017 and at Nuit Blanche Paris 2018, as well as Beneath II two years later onto the building of the Austrian Economic Chamber (WKO) in Vienna. [8] [9] Furthermore, she is active as a director in the advertising industry and in her underwater art film series Under Surfaces. [10] [3] [2]

Stemmer lives and works in Vienna, Paris and travelling the world. [1]

Born in Lebanon in 1967 in the contemporary theatre world, Zad Moultaka is a composer and visual artist. He started playing the piano at the age of five and moved to Paris in 1984. In 1989, he won the First Prize at the Conservatoire National Superieur de Paris. In 1993, he abandoned his international career as an interpreter to devote himself to composition and visual art. Trained in the discipline of the western musical writing but linked naturally to his Mediterranean roots, Zad Moultaka creates his own musical language. Noticed by György Kurtág, his meeting with the composer was decisive in the statement of a progressive original and atypical writing. His works are interpreted and appreciated throughout the world; he receives the SACEM Prize, Claude Arrieu 2007 and the Critics' Prize, best musical creation in 2017, for his work UM sovereign engine of all things.

Kimsooja was born in Daegu, South Korea. Kimsooja is a multi-disciplinary conceptual artist who travels between her three homes and places of work in New York City, Paris, and Seoul. In 1980 Kim graduated with a B.F.A in Painting from Hong-Ik University, Seoul and continued to pursue her M.F.A there, obtaining the degree in 1984 at the age of 27. Her origin as a painter was a crucial starting point for the development of her art. That same year, she received a scholarship to study art at Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France, where she studied Printmaking. Her first solo exhibition was held in 1988 at Gallery Hyundai, Seoul. Currently, her work is featured in countless international museums and galleries as well as public art fairs and other spaces. Her practice combines performance, film, photo, and site-specific installation using textile, light, and sound. Kimsooja's work investigates questions concerning the conditions of humanity, while engaging issues of aesthetics, culture, politics, and the environment. Her principle of ‘non-doing’ and ‘non-making,’ which follows a conceptual and structural investigation of performance through modes of mobility and immobility, inverts the notion of the artist as the predominant actor.

Monica Bonvicini is a German-Italian artist who works with installation, sculpture, video, photography and drawing mediums. Bonvicini describes her practice as an exploration of relationshsips between architecture and space, power, gender and sexuality.

The 56th Venice Biennale was an international contemporary art exhibition held between May and November 2015. The Venice Biennale takes place biennially in Venice, Italy. Artistic director Okwui Enwezor curated its central exhibition, "All The World's Futures".

Anna Jermolaewa is a Russia-born conceptual artist based in Vienna, Austria since 1989. Her artistic practice incorporates a wide range of media: video, installation, painting, performance, photography, and sculpture. In 1999, her video work Chicken Triptych was selected by Harald Szeemann to be presented in the Arsenal location of the 48th Venice Biennale. On 16 January 2023, it was announced that Jermolaewa will represent Austria in the 60th Venice Biennale in 2024, exhibiting in the Austrian pavilion in the Giardini della Biennale.
