The Men's 400 metre freestyle competition at the 2019 World Championships was held on 21 July 2019. [1] [2] The three-time defending champion was Sun Yang, and he successfully defended his title for a record-breaking 4th consecutive victory in the world championships in this event. [3] He became the third man to win an event 4 times at the world championships after Grant Hackett in the 1500 meter freestyle and Ryan Lochte in the 200 meter individual medley. [4]

The women's 4 × 200 metre freestyle relay event at the 2020 Summer Olympics was held in 2021 at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre. It was the event's seventh consecutive appearance, having been held at every edition since 1996.

The Men's 200 metre freestyle competition at the 2019 World Championships was held on 22 and 23 July 2019. Sun Yang was the defending champion, and defended his title. Lithuania's Danas Rapšys finished first, but was disqualified for flinching just before the start. During the medal ceremony, Great Britain's Duncan Scott refused to shake hands with China's Sun Yang, with Sun Yang calling Scott a "loser" in response.

The Women's 1500 metre freestyle competition at the 2019 World Championships was held on 22 and 23 July 2019. The defending champion was Katie Ledecky, but she was forced to withdraw due to illness.

Zachary "Zach" Douglas Apple is a retired American competitive swimmer who specializes in the sprint freestyle events. He used to swim for DC Trident in the International Swimming League. He won his first Olympic gold medal in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay at the 2020 Summer Olympics, swimming in the prelims and the final of the event, and later in the same Olympic Games won a gold medal and helped set a new world record and Olympic record in the 4x100-meter medley relay, swimming the freestyle leg of the relay in the final.

As a 15-year-old at the 2019 World Junior Championships, she won medals in three individual events, silver in the 100 meter backstroke and bronze in the 50 meter and 100 meter butterfly. Hwang Sun-woo is a South Korean swimmer.

Ahmed Ayoub Hafnaoui is a Tunisian swimmer. He is the African record holder in the short course 800-metre freestyle and 1500-metre freestyle. He competed in the 2020 Summer Olympics, where he won a gold medal in the men's 400-metre freestyle. He ranked No. 16 in the world and was the slowest qualifier for the final race but won Olympic gold with a time of 3:43.36. Hafnaoui was the only Tunisian to win Olympic gold at Tokyo 2020.
