Syed Mahmud Hossain (born 31 December 1954) [1] was the 22nd Chief Justice of Bangladesh. [2] [3] He retired on 30 December 2021. [4]
Hossain was born in 1954 to Syed Mustafa Ali (d. 2018) and Begum Kawsar Jahan. [5] He completed his education life in Comilla town. The secondary school certificate from Comilla Zilla School in 1972,HSC examination from Comilla Victoria College in 1974 and passed from the same college in 1976 in the BSc examination. In 1980,he obtained LLB degree from Comilla Law College. He completed six-month long "Commonwealth Young Lawyers Course" from the School of Oriental African Studies and the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies,both part of University of London. [2]
In 1981,Hossain started practicing law in the District Judge Court. [2] [6] Then he joined as an advocate in the High Court Division in 1983. He was appointed as a deputy attorney general in 1999. [7] He was appointed as Additional Justice of the High Court Division on 22 February 2001 and two years later,on 22 February 2003,the permanent appointment was made in the same department. On 23 February 2011,he was appointed as the Appellate Division's Justice. He was the chairman of the search committee formed to form the Election Commission twice. [8] Hossain is a strong supporter of country's Digital Security Act. In a verdict made on 6 March 2021,Hossain cautioned that there would be no consideration of bail for people who would tarnish the image of Bangladesh in any manner. He argued that this is because the first priority is the image of the country. [9] [10] [11] [12]
Kamal Hossain is a founding leader,lawyer and politician of Bangladesh. He is known as the "father of the Bangladeshi constitution" and regarded as an icon of secular democracy in the Indian subcontinent. Hossain currently heads his own law firm in Dhaka and serves as president of the Gano Forum political party.
The Supreme Court of Bangladesh is the highest court of law in Bangladesh. It is composed of the High Court Division and the Appellate Division,and was created by Part VI Chapter I of the Constitution of Bangladesh adopted in 1972. The Digital Security Act,2018 is a digital security law in Bangladesh. This act was passed with the aim of preventing the spread of racism;sectarianism;extremism;terrorist propaganda;and hatred against religious or ethnic minorities through social media,print media or any other electronic media. Any content over the internet or any other media that was deemed pornographic or otherwise inappropriate by the government could be punished by fines or prison terms of various lengths. It is a controversial law and it was feared that the law could be used to suppress dissenters against the government due to some of its provisions that are vague and ambiguous,open to interpretation or prone to abuse. This law has been used to sue and arrest journalists,activists and also cyber criminals. It has been described as a "Draconian" law.

He had played a leading role in the Hefazat movement,Khatam an-Nabiyyin movement etc. He was well-known among the Muslim masses as an Islamic leader. He was also involved in running nearly 45 Islamic seminaries.
