Comilla Victoria Government College is a college in Comilla, Bangladesh. It is one of the oldest and most renowned colleges in Comilla as well as in the Chittagong division. The college is located beside of Ranir Dighi on 32 acres of land including its intermediate and honors section. [1]

History

The college was established in 1899 by Roy Bahadur Ananda Chandra Roy. [2] Sattendranath Boshu was the first principal of the college and remained in that position until he died [3]

Fazlul Karim was the first Muslim teacher of this college in 1937. He later became the vice principal of the college in 1958 until his retirement in 1972 when the college was made a government college.

Academics

At present, the college has 15,000 students and 147 teachers, of whom 36 are women.

Freedom fighters

Many students of Comilla Victoria College joined the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971. [4] A memorial was built inside the campus commemorating the contribution of the students to Bangladeshi independence.

Housing

Comilla Victoria College has five dormitories: four for boys and one for girls. About 1,000 students reside in these dormitories.

Cultural

The educational institution has been festive every day in the activities of 13 cultural organizations. These organizations are also leading national and local level cultural fields. The students of BNCC (Army), BNCC (Air Force), Red Crescent, Victoria College Bitorko Parishad, Victoria College Theater, Rover Scouts, Campus Barta, Blood Donor Organization, Nongar, Botany Society, Career Club and Science Club conduct cultural and social work of college.

Fazlul Quader Chowdhury was a Bengali politician who served as the 5th speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan from East Pakistan. He belonged to Ayub Khan's Convention Muslim League. He was also the Acting President of Pakistan from time to time when Ayub Khan left the country. His elder brother Fazlul Kabir Chowdhury was the leader of the opposition in East Pakistan assembly. Quader was preceded by Maulvi Tamizuddin Khan of Awami League.

Nilufar Yasmin was a Bangladeshi singer of Nazrul Sangeet, Rajanikanta Geeti, Dwijendra Geeti and Atul Prasdi genre. She was the fourth of five Yasmin sisters of Bangladesh music. Her siblings are Farida Yasmin, Fauzia Yasmin, Nazma Yasmin, and Sabina Yasmin. She was awarded Ekushey Padak in 2004 by the Government of Bangladesh. She won Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for her performance in the film Shuvoda (1986).

National Professor is a prestigious teaching award given by the Government of Bangladesh for outstanding contribution on the field of education. It is awarded by the president of Bangladesh according to Bangladesh National Professor Resolution 1981. The awarded persons receive various facilities from the government.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Qayyum Chowdhury</span> Bangladeshi painter (1932–2014)

Qayyum Chowdhury was a Bangladeshi painter. Along with Zainul Abedin, Quamrul Hassan and Safiuddin Ahmed, he is considered as a first generation artist of Bangladesh. He was awarded the Ekushey Padak in 1984 and the Independence Day Award in 2014 by the Government of Bangladesh.

Amjad Hossain was a Bangladeshi film director, actor, scriptwriter and lyricist. He won the Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Director twice, for the films Golapi Ekhon Traine (1978) and Bhat De (1984). He also won Bangla Academy Literary Award in 2004 and Ekushey Padak in 1992.

Shamim Sikder was a Bangladeshi sculptor. Sikder served as a professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka between 1980–2001. She was awarded the Ekushey Padak in 2000 by the Government of Bangladesh.

Munshi Raisuddin (1901–1973) was a Bangladeshi musician and musicologist. He was awarded Ekushey Padak by the Government of Bangladesh in 1986.

Chandpur Government College is a college in Chandpur, Bangladesh. It is one of the oldest colleges in Chandpur as well as in Chittagong Division. It offers higher secondary education (HSC). It has honours and master's degree programs as well which are affiliated to National University.
