Carmichael College [3] is an educational institution in Rangpur City, Bangladesh. It was established on 10 November 1916 and was named after Thomas David Baron Carmichael of Skirling. [4]

The college is situated in Lalbag, 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) to the south from zero point of the Rangpur town. Having an area of 900 bighas (298 acres), it is the largest college of Bangladesh.

History

To create higher education opportunity in Rangpur region, the then local landlords (zamindars), including Abdul Aziz Choudhury, Gopal Lal Roy Bahadur, Mohimaranjan Roy, and Babu Monidra Chandra Roy, took initiative to set up a college. Local people also came forward to help them. Finally, the college was established at Lalbag, 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) to the south from zero point of the town. The first Governor of Bengal, Lord T.D.G. Carmicheal, inaugurated the college in 1916 and it was named after him.

From the beginning the college was under Calcutta University. It is then nationalized on 1 July 1963. Then in 1992, it came under Bangladesh National University. [5]

Academics

More than 25,000 students in HSC, Honours, and Masters levels are currently studying in this college. The HSC education is controlled by Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Dinajpur when 18 honours and masters subjects are taught according to the guidance of Bangladesh National University.

Admission

The admission rule of Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education and National University, Bangladesh is strictly followed by the college. Eligible students are selected according to the result of Secondary School Certificate examination and Higher Secondary Examination by Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education and National University, Bangladesh.

Campus

Having a huge area of 298 acre and the biggest college in Bangladesh by area , the college campus is adorned with academic buildings, tree orchards, ponds and other infrastructures. There are a number of magnificent buildings in the college. These buildings are as old as the college itself. A big library, Shaheed Minar commemorating the martyrs of language movement in 1952, Liberation war monument, a beautiful mosques and a gymnasium are also in the campus.

Raufun Basunia, former Joint Secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra League, and the General Secretary of its University of Dhaka branch was a prominent student leader who led anti-dictatorship movement in Bangladesh and was killed by pro-junta activists. He was shot dead during a clash between Chhatra Sangram Parishad and Chhatra Samaj, the ruling Jatiyo Party-backed student wing in front of Mohsin Hall at University of Dhaka on 13 February 1985. His death provoked the anti-junta student activists, and the movement for restoration of democracy became even more radicalised and consolidated. It became so violent that the dictator Hussein Muhammad Ershad had to resign shortly afterwards.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Zamindars of Mahipur</span> Zamindari estate

The zamindars of Mahipur were a Bengali aristocratic family of feudal landowners. The zamindari estate encompassed the Chakla of Qazirhat under the Cooch Behar State since the Mughal period. Although their aristocratic status was lost with the East Bengal State Acquisition and Tenancy Act of 1950, the Mahipur estate remains an important part of the history of Rangpur and belongs to one of the eighteen ancient zamindar families of Rangpur. The zamindari palace was lost as a result of flooding from the Teesta River, although the mosque, cemetery, polished reservoir and large draw-well can still be seen today.
