Rangpur Rural Electricity Association-1 is one of the 80 rural electricity associations under the Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board, the largest electricity distribution organization in Bangladesh. Rangpur Rural Electricity Association-1 distributes electricity to 3 upazilas (Mithapukur, Pirgachha, Pirganj) of Rangpur district and 2 upazilas (Sunderganj, Sadullapur) of Gaibandha district of Rangpur division. The association was established on 14 January 1982. Its headquarters is located in Shathibari, Mithapukur upazila. [1]

Rangpur Palli Bidyut Samity-1 started on January 14, 1982. There are 67 unions and 1106 villages under this association. 100% electrification has been achieved in these areas.[ citation needed ]

There are 8 divisions and 64 districts in Bangladesh, each district further subdivided into upazila. The area within each subdistrict, except for those in metropolitan areas, is divided into several unions, with each union consisting of multiple villages. Direct elections are held for each union, electing a chairperson and a number of members. In 1997, a parliamentary act was passed to reserve three seats in every union for female candidates. Following elections in the 2014–16 period, 25.2% of councillors were women, up from 23.4% in the 2011–13 period.

The Kansat Palli Bidyut protests were a series of protest in Kansat against the Kansat Palli Bidyut Samity which are subsidiaries of Rural Electrification Board that resulted in 13 deaths. The protests ranged from January to April 2006.

Rangpur Palli Bidyut Samiti-2 is one of the 80 Palli Bidyut Samitis under the Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (REB). Rangpur Palli Bidyut Samiti-2 provides electricity services through several zonal offices in five upazilas of Rangpur Division and Nilphamari District's Syedpur Upazila. This Palli Bidyut Samiti was established on 24 February 1985.
