<span class="mw-page-title-main">Bangladesh Nationalist Party</span> Centre-right political party in Bangladesh

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party is a centre-right, political party in Bangladesh and one of the major political parties of Bangladesh. It was founded on 1 September 1978 by the late Bangladeshi President Ziaur Rahman after the Presidential election of 1978, with a view of uniting the people with a nationalist ideology. Following Rahman's assassination in 1981, his widow, Khaleda Zia, had taken over leadership of the party and presided as Chairperson until her imprisonment in 2018. Since her imprisonment, Tarique Rahman, the son of late president Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia, has been serving as the acting Chairperson and has run the affairs of the party from London.

Abdus Sattar was a Bangladeshi statesman. A leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), he served as the President of Bangladesh from 1981 to 1982, and earlier as the Vice President of Bangladesh. A jurist by profession, Sattar held numerous constitutional and political offices in British India, East Pakistan and Bangladesh. He was a cabinet minister, supreme court judge, and chief election commissioner.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Jatiya Party (Ershad)</span> Political party in Bangladesh

The Jatiya Party is a conservative, nationalist political party in Bangladesh and is currently the main opposition in the Jatiya Sangsad, against the Awami League. The current chairman of the party is Ghulam Muhammad Quader. On 3 January 2019, the party announced its decision to join the Bangladesh Awami League-led Grand Alliance after having been in opposition for the previous parliamentary term. However, the party backtracked the next day and announced that it intended to remain part of the opposition. Currently, it holds Rangpur out of Bangladesh's 12 city corporations.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Assassination of Ziaur Rahman</span> 1981 murder in Chittagong, Bangladesh

Ziaur Rahman, the 7th president of Bangladesh, was assassinated by a faction of officers of Bangladesh Army, on 30 May 1981, in the south-eastern port city of Chittagong. Rahman went to Chittagong to arbitrate in a clash between the local leaders of his political party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. On the night of 30 May, a group of officers commandeered the Chittagong Circuit House, a government residence where Rahman was staying, shooting him and several others.

The office of the Chief Martial Law Administrator was a senior and authoritative post with Zonal Martial Law Administrators as deputies created in countries such as Pakistan, Bangladesh and Indonesia that gave considerable executive authority and powers to the holder of the post to enforce martial law in the country in an events to ensure the continuity of government. This office has been used mostly by military officers staging a coup d'état. On some occasions, the office has been under a civilian head of state.

Gangachara is the northernmost upazila of Bangladesh's Rangpur District, located in the Rangpur Division.

Carmichael College is an educational institution in Rangpur, Bangladesh. It was established on 10 November 1916 and was named after Thomas David Baron Carmichael of Skirling.

Mashiur Rahman, also known as Jadu Mia, was a senior minister, with the rank and status of prime minister in charge of the Ministry of Railways, Roads and Highways of Bangladesh from 29 June 1978 to 12 March 1979. He was the founder of Bangladesh Jatyiotabadi Dal, the whole process of transition to multi-party democracy was his brainchild. He named the party and the election symbol was given to the party from his party NAP. He also made the formal Declaration of Independence of Bangladesh from his party NAP, on the 23 March 1971, when Sheikh Mujib was still negotiating for the premiership of Pakistan with the military junta of Pakistan, not giving the formal declaration despite people's determination for a free, independent country.

Shawfikul Ghaani Swapan was a Bangladeshi politician and the former chairman of Bangladesh National Awami Party-Bangladesh NAP. During his political career, he served as a Member of Parliament twice, and held cabinet positions in both the Zia and Ershad Governments. His positions included serving as the State Minister of Defence, State Minister of Youth and Sports, Minister of Civil Aviation and Tourism, and Minister of Housing and Public Works.

Shah Moazzem Hossain was a Bangladesh Nationalist Party politician and the last Deputy Prime Minister of Bangladesh. He was elected as the Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Rangpur-6 constituency as a Jatiya Party candidate in a by-election in September 1991 and served until November 1995.

Rangpur-5 is a constituency represented in the Jatiya Sangsad of Bangladesh since 2008 by H. N. Ashequr Rahman of the Awami League.

Rahgir Al Mahi Ershad, better known as Saad Ershad, is a Bangladeshi businessman and politician belonging to Jatiya Party. He is the incumbent Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Rangpur-3 constituency. His father Hussain Muhammad Ershad was Former President of Bangladesh and his mother Rowshan Ershad is the current Leader of the opposition of Jatiya Sangsad. On 29 October 2019, he was appointed the Joint Secretary General of the Jatiya Party.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">M. A. Sattar</span> Bangladeshi industrialist and politician (1925-2009)

Mohammad Abdus Sattar, known as M. A. Sattar, was a prominent Bangladeshi business magnate and politician. He was the founding Chairman and Managing Director of Sattar & Company Ltd., Sattar Jute Mills Ltd., Hasna Shipbuilding & Navigation Ltd., and Rangpur Industries Ltd. In the 1980s, Sattar held several cabinet ministry positions, elected as a Member of Parliament twice, and was Chief Whip in President Ershad's Government from 1988 to 1990.
