Syed Saleem is a Telugu writer. [1] He has written thirty novels, about 300 short stories [2] and more than 150 poems. His fiction has been translated into English, Hindi, Marathi, Oriya, Malayalam, Kannada and Tamil languages. His work is characterised by his humanitarianism and poetic expression. [3] His novel Kaluthunna Poolathota won the Sahitya Akademi Award in Telugu, 2010. [4] [5]

Early life

Saleem was born in Throvagunta village near Ongole. He began writing poetry while in school. [6] He earned an M.Sc. (Tech) degree from Andhra University.

Career

Saleem began writing short fiction in 1980; his first story was "Manishi". His stories have been adapted as a television serial, Saleem Kathalu, which has aired on the Telugu language television channel DD Yadagiri. [7] One of his stories, "Aaro Alludu" has been included in the second volume of World Best Stories, published by Bangalore University.

'Abhyudaya Sahiti Puraskaram' was presented to him in 2012 at the cultural festival ‘Sampradaya Sanskritika Vaibhavam-4'. [8]

Many of Saleem's stories have been translated into Kannada, Hindi, Oriya and Marathi. Twenty selected stories were translated into English and published as Ocean and Other Stories by Prism Publications, Bangalore. Another twenty stories were published as Three Dimensions and Other Stories, also by Prism Publications. His novels Vendimegham and Kaluthunna Poolathota have been translated into several languages.

Saleem works as an additional commissioner of income tax in Nagpur. [1]

Bhargavi Prabhanjan Rao, a Sahitya Akademi awardee, was an eminent translator in Telugu Literature. She was actively involved in translating various works of author and playwright Girish Karnad. Her most famous works include Noorella Panta, a compilation of one hundred short stories by women writers of the twentieth century. She died due to a heart attack on 23 May 2008 in Hyderabad.

Nayani Krishnakumari was an Indian scholar, poet, researcher, speaker in Telugu and an active participant in literary and cultural organizations. She served several institutions in various capacities. She received several awards such as Swarnakankanam, instituted by Desoddharaka Kasinathuni Nageswara Rao, Best Telugu Writer award from Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University, and Sahitya Akademi among others.

Puripanda Appala Swamy (1904–1982), also spelled Appalaswamy, was a linguist, writer, translator, journalist and editor.

Viswanatha Satyanarayana was a 20th-century Telugu writer. His works included poetry, novels, dramatic play, short stories and speeches, covering a wide range of subjects such as analysis of history, philosophy, religion, sociology, political science, linguistics, psychology and consciousness studies, epistemology, aesthetics and spiritualism. He was a student of the illustrious Telugu writer Chellapilla Venkata Sastry, of the Tirupati Venkata Kavulu duo. Viswanatha's wrote in both a modern and classical style, in complex modes. His popular works include Ramayana Kalpavrukshamu, Kinnersani Patalu and the novel Veyipadagalu. Among many awards, he was awarded the Jnanpith Award in 1970, the first for a Telugu writer, and Padma Bhushan in 1971.

Samala Sadasiva was a Telugu language poet and writer. He won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2011.

Peddibhotla Subbaramayya was a Telugu short-story writer from Vijayawada. His short story collection Peddibhotia Subbaramayya Kathalu was selected for Sahitya Akademi Award in Telugu for 2012.

Dasari Venkata Ramana, popular for his Chandamama style of story writing is an author hailing from Kurnool district, Andhra Pradesh. His genre of writing is mostly confined to children's literature. He has been awarded with Bala Sahitya Puraskar for Telugu language for the year 2014 from Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi. He has also been awarded Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University's annual literary award under Children's Literature category for the year 2006.

Panchagnula Adinarayana Sastry (1890–1951) was a Scholar of Sanskrit and Telugu. He supported the "Navya sahitya movement" and "spoken telugu movement" led by Gidugu Venkata Ramamoorty. He established "Aryabharathi Granthamala" in 1930.

Asavadi Prakasa Rao was an Indian poet, critic, translator and scholar, who is known for his poetry and prose works. He is noted for his significant contribution to Telugu and Sanskrit literature. In January 2021, he was awarded India's fourth-highest civilian award the Padma Shri in the Arts and Literature category. As Ashtavadhani, he has given 170 performances and has written and published 50 books across various genres. His most notable literary contribution is his performance of Avadhanam – a literary performance. He has received an honorary D Litt from Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University and a Distinguished Teacher award from the Department of Higher Education, Government of Andhra Pradesh.
