Syed Zafar Mahmood is an Indian civil-servant and former 'Officer on Special Duty' for Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. [1] On March 9, 2005, the Prime Minister appointed the 'Sachar Committee' to study the "social, economic and educational status" of India's minority Muslim community. [2] [3] Mahmood worked with the Sachar Committee to submit its report to the Government of India within two years on November 17, 2006. [4] [5] He has since given numerous talks in and outside India on the topic. In his presentations at Case Western Reserve University and Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government he has commented on the steps forward to bridge the economic, social and educational divide of Indian Muslims. [6]

During President George W. Bush's 2006 visit to India, the U.S. president convened an interfaith meeting in New Delhi and Mahmood was one of the representatives of Indian Muslims. [7]

Education

Mahmood was educated at Aligarh Muslim University where he earned B.Sc. (Honours) in Physics, M.S. in political science, and Ph.D. in Public Administration. [6]

Non-Governmental Work

Mahmood is also the founder of three non-profit organizations: Zakat Foundation of India, [8] Interfaith Coalition for Peace [9] and God's Grace Foundation. [10]

Of note, Zakat Foundation of India (founded in 1997) is a non-profit which runs an orphanage for victims of the 2002 Gujarat riots in partnership with USA's One World Children's Fund. [11] The Foundation recently was in the news for adopting the family of the late 11-year-old Shanno Khan. [12] Mahmood's work in regard to these organizations has also been featured on CNN [13] and America's National Public Radio (NPR). [14] In September 2009, ZFI filed a 'Right To Information' application to question why the Government had rejected the Sachar Committee recommendations to ensure proper governance of Wakf properties. [15]

On June 29, 2013, Mahmood was invited as a speaker to 'Young India Conclave' in Gandhinagar, Gujarat along with the state's Chief Minister Sri Narendra Modi. [16] Mahmood challenged the Chief Minister on his poor records towards Muslims, [17] [18] [19] [20] highlighting anti-Muslim rhetoric on the BJP website, [21] as well as policies that the BJP would need to adopt to appeal to Indian Muslim voters. The BJP is aligned with right-wing politics, and its policies adhere to Hindutva, a Hindu nationalist ideology. It has close ideological and organisational links to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) volunteer organisation. As of March 2023, it is the country's biggest political party in terms of representation in the Parliament of India as well as state legislatures.

Narendra Damodardas Modi is an Indian politician who has served as the 14th Prime Minister of India since May 2014. Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat from 2001 to 2014 and is the Member of Parliament (MP) for Varanasi. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a right-wing Hindu nationalist paramilitary volunteer organisation. He is the longest-serving prime minister from outside the Indian National Congress.

Keshubhai Patel was an Indian politician who was the Chief Minister of Gujarat in 1995 and from 1998 to 2001. He was a six-time member of Gujarat Legislative Assembly. He was a member of RSS since 1940s, of Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1960s, Janata Party in 1970s, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from 1980. He subsequently left the BJP in 2012 and formed the Gujarat Parivartan Party. He was elected from Visavadar in the 2012 state assembly election but later resigned in 2014 due to ill health and merged his party with BJP. He was awarded India's third highest civilian award the Padma Bhushan posthumously in 2021.

Najma Akbar Ali Heptulla is an Indian politician. She is the Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia since 2017. She was a six time member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian parliament, between 1980 and 2016, and Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha for sixteen years when she was a member of Congress. Later she was nominated vice-president of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2012, and was a minister from 2014-2016 as a member of BJP in Narendra Modi's first government. From 2016 to 2021, she served as the 16th Governor of Manipur.

Central Waqf Council, India is an Indian statutory body established in 1964 by the Government of India under the Waqf Act, 1954 for the purpose of advising it on matters pertaining to the working of the State Waqf Boards and proper administration of the Waqfs in the country. The 2002 Gujarat riots, also known as the 2002 Gujarat violence, was a three-day period of inter-communal violence in the western Indian state of Gujarat. The burning of a train in Godhra on 27 February 2002, which caused the deaths of 58 Hindu pilgrims and karsevaks returning from Ayodhya, is cited as having instigated the violence. Following the initial riot incidents, there were further outbreaks of violence in Ahmedabad for three months; statewide, there were further outbreaks of violence against the minority Muslim population of Gujarat for the next year.

The Sachar Committee was a seven-member high-level committee established in March 2005 by former Indian prime minister Manmohan Singh. The committee was headed by former Chief Justice of Delhi High Court Rajinder Sachar to study the social, economic and educational condition of Muslims in India. The committee submitted its report in 2006 and the report was available in public domain on 30 November 2006. The 403-page report had suggestions and solutions for the inclusive development of the Muslims in India.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2014 Indian general election</span>

General elections were held in India in nine phases from 7 April to 12 May 2014 to elect the members of the 16th Lok Sabha. With 834 million registered voters, they were the largest-ever elections in the world until being surpassed by the 2019 elections. Around 23.1 million or 2.7% of the total eligible voters were aged 18–19 years. A total of 8,251 candidates contested the 543 elected Lok Sabha seats. The average election turnout over all nine phases was around 66.40%, the highest ever in the history of Indian general elections.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Indian Institute of Public Health, Gandhinagar</span>

Indian Institute of Public Health, Gandhinagar (IIPHG) is a private university located in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, India. The university was established in 2015 by the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) through The Indian Institute of Public Health Gandhinagar Act, 2015, one of five Indian Institutes of Public Health established by PHFI and the first to be granted university status. It is the first university in India to focus solely on public health.

Local elections were held in the Indian state of Gujarat in 2021. Elections were held for 8,235 seats, with 237 seats having only one unopposed candidates. No form was filled for two seats in Taluka panchayat. The elections included six municipal corporations where elections took place in February — Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, Bhavnagar and Jamnagar – and one (Gandhinagar) in which the elections were held on 3 October. Results to Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation were declared on 5 October 2021.
