Synne Skouen (born 8 August 1950) is a Norwegian music writer and composer. [1]

Biography

Skouen was born in Oslo. She studied at the Vienna Academy of Music with Alfred Uhl and Erwin Ratz for composition and Dieter Kaufmann and Friedrich Cerha for electronic music. She also studied with Finn Mortensen in Oslo, receiving her degree in composition from the Norwegian Academy of Music in 1976.

Skouen appeared in the 1966 film Reisen til havet , directed by her father, Arne Skouen. [2] She worked as a member of the experimental music theatre group "Die Fremden" in Vienna. From 1977 to 1986 she worked as editor of the contemporary music periodical Ballade, and wrote as a music critic for Arbeiderbladet. In 1993 Skouen became the music director for Norwegian Broadcasting's cultural channel, and in 1999 was named Head of Culture. In 2002 she served as President of the Society of Norwegian Composers. Synne Skouen has received a number of varied commissions throughout her career including works written for the Festival of North Norway, Bergen International Festival, Oslo Chamber Music Festival, Oslo International Grieg Festival, Ny Musikk, Norwegian National Opera and Ballet and NRK. Skouen has also written for theatre and film productions, including the radio production Gull Eaters written in collaboration with playwright Cecilie Løveid. The production earned them a 1983 Prix Italia Award for Best Drama. [4] [5]

2011 saw the release of the album Call-Notes featuring works by Skouen and in the following year her commissioned work Autumn Arias saw its premiere at the Ultima Oslo Contemporary Music Festival, featuring the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra and soloists Hans Christian Bræin and Øystein Birkeland.

September 2017 saw the premiere of Skouen's chamber opera Ballerina at the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet. The work is based on a play with the same title, penned by her father Arne Skouen. The original text has been adapted to an opera libretto by Oda Radoor. [6]

Skouen is published by Norsk Musikkforlag, Musikk-Huset AS, Alicia Keys Music and her scores are available from the National Library of Norway’s print music service NB Noter.

Gunnar Sønstevold was a Norwegian composer. He was born in Elverum, and married composer Maj Sønstevold in 1941. He composed orchestral works, vocal music, chamber music, and music to a number of plays, ballets and films. He headed the Music Department of the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation/Television from 1966 to 1974. He was awarded Filmkritikerprisen in 1955, for the film Det brenner i natt!. He received the Arts Council Norway music prize in 1972, and Radioteatret's honorary prize in 1987.

Alfred Janson was a Norwegian pianist and composer. He was born in Oslo as the son of sculptor Gunnar Janson and pianist Margrethe Gleditsch, and was brother of journalist Mette Janson. He was first married to actress and singer Grynet Molvig and later to Berit Gustavsen. He made his piano debut in 1962. Among his early compositions is the piano piece November from 1962 and the orchestral Vuggesang from 1963. He composed the ballet Mot solen for the Bergen International Festival in 1969, and in 1991 he was the festival's principal composer.

He was the student representative for the creation of the Norwegian Academy of Music (1969-1971), leader for the UNM music festival (1970-1973) and leader for Ny Musikk (1973-1976). Geir Johnson was a composer, writer and initiator of culture projects living at Nesodden outside Oslo. He was born in Fredrikstad, and received his first musical training as a soprano soloist in boys' choirs in Oslo, followed by music training in piano and singing, as well as choral conducting studies with Knut Nystedt. His own performance career spanned from many years of choral conducting, via a short career as singer and keyboard player in a rock band, to performance artist in a multi-artist collective titled The TRASH Ensemble.

Journey to the Sea is a Norwegian drama film from 1966 directed by Arne Skouen, who was also the screenwriter. Skouen's daughter Synne Skouen played Pinne, a teenage girl wanted by the authorities.

Om Tilla is a Norwegian drama film from 1963 directed by Arne Skouen. Skouen wrote the screenplay, which was based on his 1959 novel Bare om barn. It contained a series of articles from the newspaper Verdens Gang, in which Skouen pointed out that children with intellectual disabilities and children with behavioral difficulties did not receive sufficient financial support or professional help.
