The band drew their name from F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby.
Chromatics were an American electronic music band from Portland, Oregon, formed in 2001. The band's final line-up consisted of Ruth Radelet, Adam Miller, Nat Walker, and Johnny Jewel. The band originally featured a trademark sound indebted to punk and lo-fi that was described as "noisy" and "chaotic". After numerous lineup changes, which left guitarist Adam Miller as the sole original member, the band began releasing material on the Italians Do It Better record label in 2007, with their style streamlined into an Italo disco-influenced sound.
Treepeople is an alternative rock band from Boise, Idaho, although its members were officially based in Seattle, Washington. The band was originally composed of vocalist/guitarist Scott Schmaljohn, drummer Wayne Flower, guitarist/vocalist Doug Martsch, and bassist Pat Brown. After six albums and various lineup changes, the band disbanded in 1994. The band's original lineup would reform in 2018 and 2023, sans Brown due to his death in 1999.

Produced by longtime collaborator Robin Rivera, the album contains eighteen tracks with a 67-minute runtime. The album cover generated controversy due to its content, which features a nude woman playing a piano while holding a red balloon in an open grass field. The woman was later revealed to be Filipino-Iranian television personality Joey Mead King.

Since then she has garnered fame as an indie pop musician with several EPs including the Transgender Street Legend trilogy and the song "Revolution Lover".
