Finlay Park,at 14 acres (57,000 m2),is the largest and most visited park in downtown Columbia,South Carolina. The park opened in 1991. Initially named Sidney Park,it was renamed after a former Columbia mayor Kirkman Finlay in 1994. In the park there was a scenic waterfall along with cascading mountain type stream falling to the park lake. This waterfall has remained broken for the better half of two years. There are picnic tables,two playground areas and a cafe. The park was a favorite for families,but is now home to the city's largest population of homeless people. Problems with the park have persisted and prompted local charity organizations to begin weekly food services to the people living on the park's benches. Outdoor movies are played on Friday nights during the summer months.
Hopkins is a census-designated place (CDP) in Richland County,South Carolina,United States. It was founded circa 1836 and named after John Hopkins (1739–1775). It is located 11 miles (18 km) southeast of downtown Columbia and is part of the Columbia Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census,the population of the Hopkins CDP was 2,882.
Columbia High School a public high school in the St. Andrews area of Columbia,South Carolina,United States. Columbia High School was originally housed in the former Columbia Female Academy at 1323 Washington Street at the corner with Marion Street. This building was leased to the Richland County Commissioners of Schools in 1884. The school became Columbia's first public high school in 1895 as the Washington Street School. The original Columbia High School building was constructed in 1915 on that site. The current building was constructed in 1975.
