T. Thrivikraman (Thekkedath Thrivikraman) (born 6 May 1943) is an Indian mathematician who has made important contributions to topology, fuzzy mathematics, history of mathematics and to several other areas of mathematics. [1] He actively promoted the culture of mathematical research in Kerala, himself guiding as many as 29 students in their doctoral research. [2] He was also actively involved in the activities of the science popularization movement known as Kerala Sasthra Sahithya Parishad. [3]

Early life and work

Thrivikraman was born in Arangottukara, a small village in Thrissur district in Kerala State. After completing his Bachelor's studies in mathematics in Thrissur, he took his master's degree in mathematics from Kerala University in 1964. He started his mathematical career as a lecturer in mathematics in Mar Athanasius College, Kothamangalam, India, immediately after securing his master's degree. He availed leave from Mar Athanasius College and proceeded to Madurai University to pursue research in mathematics. Initially, he secured the Master of Philosophy degree in mathematics in 1969. He was awarded the Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1976 for his dissertation on "Studies in Compactifications and other Extensions" written under the supervision of Prof. T. Soundararajan. In 1977 he moved over to the Department of Mathematics in Cochin University of Science and Technology where he held several positions until his retirement in 2003. After retirement from Cochin University of Science and Technology, he joined St. Joseph's College, Irinjalakuda to help develop a research centre in mathematics. Since 2009, he has been remaining active in mathematics by serving as a Visiting Professor in Kannur University.

More than half of his doctoral students worked on various aspects of fuzzy mathematics. He helped push the boundaries of the theory to newer frontiers. Under his guidance and supervision, studies were conducted on various fuzzy mathematical structures like, fuzzy topology, fuzzy topological semigroups, fuzzy convexity, fuzzy inner-product spaces, fuzzy measures, fuzzy topological games, fuzzy commutative algebra, fuzzy matroids, etc. [2]

During the 79th Annual Conference of the Indian Mathematical Society held at Rajagiri School of Engineering & Technology, Kochi, during 28–31 December 2013, Thrivikraman, along with two other mathematicians from Kerala Prof. K. S. S. Nambooripad and Prof. R. Sivaramakrishnan, were honoured in a special event called Guruvandanam for their lifetime contributions to mathematics. [4]

Activities under the banner of Kerala Mathematical Association

Kerala Mathematical Association is an organisation established in 1962 to serve the mathematical community comprising students, teachers and researchers inside Kerala and outside. Thrivikraman has been serving the Association as its Academic Secretary. In this capacity he has helped organize several national/international workshops and seminars in various colleges in different parts of Kerala.

Science popularization efforts

Thrivikraman is a life-member of Kerala Sasthra Sahithya Parishad. He organised a unit of the Parishad at Kothamangalam and also a Graama Saasthra Samithi there. He published many popular science articles in Malayalam dealing with mathematics in various journals. He contributed about 20 articles to the Malayalam encyclopaedia Viswa Vijnana Kosham published by National Book Stall, 8 articles to a Children's encyclopaedia published by STEPS. He authored two books on popular science and mathematics and also a book of poems.

He published a number of books of which Chithayile Velicham received the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Literary Criticism in 1982.

Joseph Mundassery was a literary critic and Indian politician from Kerala state. He specialised in the Malayalam language and literature. In Kerala politics, he is remembered as the Education Minister who was behind the controversial Education Bill of the first EMS communist ministry of 1957.

Vyloppilli Sreedhara Menon was an Indian poet of Malayalam literature. Known for his works such as Kudiyozhikkal, Kannikkoythu and Mambazham, Menon was the founder president of the Purogamana Kala Sahitya Sangham, an organisation of Kerala-based artists, writers and art and literature enthusiasts. He was a recipient of several honours including Sahitya Akademi Award, Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Poetry, Vayalar Award and Odakkuzhal Award.

N. V. Krishna Warrier was an Indian poet, journalist, scholar, academician and political thinker. A prolific writer, Warrier's works covered the genres of poetry, drama, travelogue, translation, children's literature and science. He was a recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award and the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Poetry. The Kerala Sahitya Akademi honoured him with their fellowship in 1986, three years before his death in 1989.

P. Kunjanandan Nair, better known by his pseudonym, Thikkodiyan, was an Indian playwright, novelist, lyricist and screenwriter of Malayalam. He was known for his contributions to the genre of radio plays and his autobiography, Arangu Kaanatha Nadan, which detailed the socio-cultural development of Malabar in the post-independent period, fetched him a number of awards including the Kendra Sahithya Academy Award, Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Biography and Autobiography, Vayalar Award and the Odakkuzhal Award.

S. Guptan Nair was an Indian scholar, academic, critic and writer of Malayalam literature. Known for his literary works as well as for his oratorical skills, Nair was a prolific writer with over 35 books to his credit. He was a distinguished fellow of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi and a recipient of several honours including Kendra Sahitya Academy Award, Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award, Vayalar Award, Vallathol Award and Ezhuthachan Puraskaram, the last one being the highest literary award of the Government of Kerala.

M. K. Prasad was an Indian environmentalist known for his grassroots level activism to protect tropical rainforests in the Indian state of Kerala. In the late 1970s, as a member of Kerala Sasthra Sahithya Parishad, he led the Save Silent Valley movement, to prevent development of a hydroelectric project in the Silent Valley National Park, a project that would have flooded the rainforest.

Thattassery Mathai Chummar, commonly identified as T. M. Chummar, was an Indian academic and writer of Malayalam literature, best known for his books on its history. An associate of G. Sankara Kurup and Vailoppilli Sreedhara Menon, Chummar's books on Kunchan Nambiar and C. V. Raman Pillai detail their literary contributions. He was a recipient of the title Sahitya Nipunan, conferred on him by the Rajah of Cochin. The Kerala Sahitya Akademi honoured him with the distinguished fellowship in 1986.

Puthezhath Raman Menon was an Indian writer of Malayalam literature. Known for essays, historical writings, biographies and translations, Menon was the first to translate Tagore's works into Malayalam. He was a judge at the Kerala High Court and was a recipient of the title, Sahitya Kushalan, conferred on him by the Rajah of Cochin. Kerala Sahitya Akademi honoured him with the distinguished fellowship in 1971.

Joseph Raphael, better identified as Ponjikkara Rafi, was an Indian essayist, playwright, short story writer and a novelist of Malayalam literature. His oeuvre consists of short story anthologies, novels, philosophical works and screenplays but he is best remembered for two novels, Daivadhoothan, regarded as the first Malayalam novel written in stream of consciousness narrative style, and Ora Pro Nobis, a historical novel based on the Dutch colonial rule. He was also the author of Kaliyugam, a philosophical work jointly written with his wife, Sabeena Rafi, which fetched him the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Miscellaneous Works in 1972.

P. K. Narayana Pillai, better identified as Sahitya Panchanan P. K. Narayana Pillai, was an Indian literary critic, essayist, scholar, grammarian and poet of Malayalam language. One of the pioneers of literary criticism in Malayalam, he wrote more than 25 books which include Panchananante Vimarssthrayam, a critique of the writings of Thunchaththu Ezhuthachan, Cherusseri Namboothiri and Kunchan Nambiar and two books on Malayalam grammar, Leghuvyakaranam and Vyakarana Pravesika. He was a judge of the High Court of Kerala, a member of the Sree Moolam Popular Assembly and the founder president of the Samastha Kerala Sahithya Parishad.

Noonhil Vadakkemadathil Padmanabhan Unithiri is a multilingual scholar, author, researcher, poet, progressive thinker, translator and teacher from Kerala, India. He has authored around 200 books in Sanskrit, Malayalam and English languages including translated works.

S. Sivadas is an Indian children's writer in Malayalam. He is the author of around 200 books which include popular science, contemporary ecology, short stories, novels and other fictional stories with an emphasis on scientific outlook. He was a chemistry professor at CMS College Kottayam. He is a three-time recipient of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award.
