T. Venkatapathi Reddiar is an Indian horticulturist and florist, credited with the development of over 100 varieties of crossandra flowers and casuarinas. [1] He was honored by the Government of India, in 2012, with the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri. [2]
Venkatapathi Reddiar was born on 29 March 1946 in Koodapakkam village of the Indian Union Territory of Puducherry. [3] His schooling was broken while he was in grade 4 as he had to assist his family in farming but, taking a fascination for horticulture, he learnt the science through self-education. [3] [4] He obtained translated versions of scientific journals for his studies and attempted reportedly innovative practices at Lakshminarayana Crossandra Innovative Centre, a laboratory and research centre founded by him in 1972. Initially he worked on micropropagation of different varieties of flower plants but soon started deploying tissue culture techniques at the laboratory he had set up.[ citation needed ]
Reddiar is credited with the standardization of the technique of nodal stem cuttings in mist chamber. [3] He is reported to have developed over 100 varieties of plants such as Crossandra and disease resistant Casuarina. [5] [6] One of the crossandra varieties he has developed has been christened Abdul Kalam Crossandra, after the erstwhile President of India. Another variety of casuarina developed by him is dedicated to the incumbent Chief Minister of Puducherry, N. Rangaswamy and is known by name, Rangaswamy Casuarina. [5] [7] [8] He is reported to have devised farming techniques for Delhi Crossandra which yields 20 kg of flowers per acre per day. [3] He is also credited with the development of 30 high yielding mutant varieties of Crossandra using gamma radiation, with assistance from the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Kalpakkam. Reddiar, whose hybrid varieties have been planted in the Mughal Gardens of the Rashtrapati Bhavan, [9] lives in Koodapakkam in Puducherry. [1]
Venkatapathi Reddiar, holder several patents, [11] was honored by the International Tamil University, Maryland, USA [12] with the degree of Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa) in 2011. [13] The same year, in 2011, he received the Vezhan Vittighar award from Tractors and Farm Equipment Limited (TAFE). [11] He also features in the Limca Book of Records, an Indian repository of records and achievements, for his innovations. [7] [8] Reddiar, who has been invited by the President of India for a lunch with him at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, [9] [4] [10] was awarded the civilian honour of Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2012, making him the first person from Puducherry to receive the award. Puducherry, also known as Pondicherry, is a union territory of India, consisting of four small geographically unconnected districts. Pondicherry University, also known as PU, is a central research university located in Kalapet, Pondicherry in Union Territory of Puducherry, India. It was established by an Act of Parliament in 1985 by the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India. V. Venkatasubba Reddiar was the second Chief Minister of the Union Territory of Pondicherry (Puducherry). He was born in a wealthy agricultural family at Madukkarai, Pondicherry. His parents are Vaithilingam Reddiar and Vemalammal. His father Vaithilingam Reddiar was the Mayor of Nettapakkam commune during French rule. His son V. Vaithilingam also served as the Chief Minister of Pondicherry.
Saroj Ghose is an Indian science popularizer and museum maker. He was the director of Birla Industrial & Technological Museum and director general of the National Council of Science Museums, Government of India. He was also the President of the International Council of Museums in Paris during 1992–98. He won many awards including one for "Best Effort in Science Popularisation Amongst Children". He has also mentored some of India's best Museum Developers.
The All India N.R. Congress is a regional political party formed by the Chief Minister of Puducherry, N. Rangaswamy in the Indian union territory of Puducherry. He announced the party formation on 7 February 2011 in the party's head office in Pondicherry as a breakaway from the Indian National Congress. It fought the 2011 elections by allying with AIADMK and won the majority. Since 2014, it is part of the National Democratic Alliance led by the BJP. NDA alliance won the majority in the 2021 elections and is currently the ruling party of the union territory.
Kewal Singh Choudhary (1915–1991) was an Indian diplomat, Foreign Secretary and India's ambassador to the USSR, Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan and USA. He was a 1955 recipient of the Indian civilian honour of Padma Shri.
Madras Kadiravelu Saroja, was an Indian classical dancer, known for her expertise, as an exponent and as a teacher, in the classical dance form of Bharatanatyam. Brahma Singh is an Indian Horticultural scientist, known for his expertise on protected cultivation and his efforts in developing agro-technologies for the high altitude areas of the Himalayan region of Leh and for identifying and popularizing the fruit crops of seabuckthorn and Indian mulberry (Noni). The Government of India honoured him, in 2014, by awarding him the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for his contributions to the fields of science and technology.
H. M. Cassime (1900–1986) was a Tamil-born businessman and mayor of Pondicherry. He served as mayor from 15 September 1956 to 3 November 1961 during the period of the merger of Pondicherry from French India to the Republic of India.
Madeleine Herman de Blic was a Belgian-born Indian social worker and humanist, known for her humanitarian services in the south Indian state of Puducherry. She is the founder of Volontariat, a Puducherry-based non governmental organization engaged in social welfare activities since 1966. She is a recipient of several honors such as Legion of Honour from the Government of France, Order of the Crown from the King of Belgium, Doctor Schweitzer Award and the Independence Day Award from the Government of Puducherry. The Government of India awarded her the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2016, for her contributions to society.

She works with a non-governmental organization called Sambhav which was visualised by her father Padma Shri Prof Radhamohan that promotes organic farming and conservation of indigenous varieties besides doing many other activities. The achievements of Sabarmatee were recognised in 2018, when she received the Nari Shakti Puraskar and in 2020 with the Padma Shri.
