Tahseen Bahar Shuchona is a Bangladeshi politician and the third mayor of Cumilla City Corporation. [1] [2] [3] A physician by profession, Suchona is the first female mayor of Cumilla City. [4] [5] [6] She represents the Bangladesh Awami League. [7] [8]

Early life and education

Suchona was born to A. K. M. Bahauddin Bahar and Meharun Nassa. Her father Bahar is a Bangladeshi politician from the Awami League and the incumbent member of parliament for Comilla-6. Suchona completed her MBBS degree from Eastern Medical College, Comilla. Later she launched a social welfare organization namely 'Jagroto Manobikota'. [9] [10] [11] [12] [13]

Political career

Tahseen Bahar Suchona's involvement in politics began with her role as the organizing secretary of the Cumilla city unit of the Awami League. [14] She later ran for the mayoral seat in the Cumilla City Corporation by-elections. [15] On March 9, 2024, Suchona was elected as mayor, receiving 48,890 votes. [16] [17] [18] [19] On 19 August 2024, the national government removed her from the mayoralty along with numerous other mayors and other elected local government officials. [20] After the fall of Awami League government during the 2024 Bangladesh quota reform movement, Suchona and her father fled to India and are currently staying in Kolkata under the protection of a local political leader. Awards

In 2021, Tahseen Bahar Suchona was honored with the JCI TOYP (Ten Outstanding Young Persons) Award by Junior Chamber International Bangladesh. Suchona's recognition was for her role as the general secretary of 'Jagroto Manobikota'. [24] [25] [26] [27] [28]

Controversies

Due to her questionable role throughout the July Massacare, several murder cases have been filed against Suchona and her father which are under investigation by the Interim government of Muhammad Yunus. Suchona is accused of being involved in the torture of general protestors in Cumilla area during the 2024 Bangladesh quota reform movement. [29] [30] [31]

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Non-cooperation movement (2024)</span> Pro-democratic mass uprising against the government of Bangladesh

The non-cooperation movement, also known as the one-point movement, was a pro-democratic disinvestment movement and a mass uprising against the Awami League-led government of Bangladesh, initiated within the framework of 2024 Bangladesh quota reform movement. The sole demand of this movement was the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her cabinet. It was the final stage of the wider movement known as the Student–People's uprising or the July Revolution. Although the movement was initially limited to the goal of reforming quotas in government jobs, it snowballed into a mass anti-government uprising after the deaths of several protesters. The movement was also fueled by ongoing socio-economic and political issues, including the government's mismanagement of the national economy, rampant corruption by government officials, human rights violations, allegations of undermining the country's sovereignty by Sheikh Hasina, and increasing authoritarianism and democratic backsliding.

2024 Bangladesh post-resignation violence took place after the resignation of Sheikh Hasina, during the clashes between the protesters and opposition activists on one side, and the Awami League supporters, government and security officials on the other. On the day of the resignation, 25 police officers were killed. According to the Daily Sun, at least 119, including both the students and Awami League activists, were killed that day. According to Prothom Alo, 1494 sculptures and monuments were vandalized across Bangladesh after the resignation of Sheikh Hasina.
