Hungary competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, from 13 to 29 August 2004. Hungarian athletes have competed at every Summer Olympic Games in the modern era, except the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp, and the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles because of the Soviet boycott. The Hungarian Olympic Committee sent a total of 209 athletes to the Games, 119 men and 90 women, to compete in 20 sports. Water polo and handball were the only team-based sports in which Hungary had its representation in these Olympic Games. There was only a single competitor in road cycling and mountain biking.

Tamás Faragó is a former Hungarian water polo player. He competed in all major international tournaments between 1970 and 1980 and won three medals at the Summer Olympics and five at the world and European championships. He was the top goalscorer at the 1976 Olympics, with 22 goals. After retiring from competitions he became a water polo coach, guiding Hungary's junior and women's national teams. In 1993 he was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame, and in 2005 he was voted the Hungarian coach of the year.

Tamás Kulifai is a Hungarian sprint canoeist. He won a silver medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in the K-4 1000 m event, with Zoltan Kammerer, David Toth and Daniel Pauman. In June 2015, he competed for Hungary at the inaugural European Games, again in the Men's K-4 1000m sprint canoe, with the same team. The team earned a gold medal.
Dávid Tóth is a Hungarian canoer. He has won a silver medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in the K-4 1000 m event. In June 2015, he competed in the inaugural European Games, for Hungary in canoe sprint, more specifically, Men's K-4 1000m again with Zoltan Kammerer, Tamás Kulifai, and Dániel Pauman.
Balázs Makány is a Hungarian swimmer, who specialized in sprint and relay freestyle events. Makany is a member of Kőbánya Swimming Club, and is coached and trained by Gyorgy Turi. He is also a varsity swimmer for the Texas A&M Aggies, and a graduate of computer science at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas.
