Tamarisk and Palm is an Akkadian disputation poem written on clay tablets and dates to the 18th century BC from the reign of Hammurabi. The poem features an argument between a tamarisk and a date palm; the Tamarisk leads in the name of the poem because it presents the first speech during the debate, followed by a reply from Palm. [1] The text is fragmentary but appears to have followed the typical structure of Sumerian disputation poems. [2] It was the most famous Akkadian disputation poem of antiquity, with its manuscripts ranging from the 18th to 12th centuries BC, and it continues to be the best-known Akkadian disputation today. [3]
Some have classified Tamarisk and Palm as a Sumerian disputation, but this is on the basis of a Sumerian fragment that turns out to have been translated from an Akkadian original. [4] There is one Sumerian topos and loanword from the Akkadian text that occurs during its cosmogonic prologue, rendered as "in those days", which refers to a primeval and mythical time outside of history. [5]
In Mesopotamian disputation literature, debates between trees is a recurring theme. In Sumerian disputations, there is the Debate between tree and reed. In other Akkadian poems, there is also both the Palm and Vine and the Series of the Poplar . [6] A much later example from Aesop's fables is The Oak and the Reed . [7]
The cosmogonical prologue of the text traces from the beginning of creation to the occasion that led to the rivalry between the two plants, when a king decides to plant a tamarisk and a date palm into his garden. It reads as follows according to the Emar recension: [8] [a]
In those distant days, in those distant nights, in those far-away years, When the gods established the land, They built the cities for the far-away people, When they piled up the mountains And excavated the rivers, the (grantor) of life for the land, The gods of the land held a counsel, The god[s …] (5) were pondering with each other. Šamaš was sitting among them, And [the great Lady of the Gods] took a seat. Before then, there had been no monarchy in the land, And [sovereignty] had remained [with the god]s (alone). (But) the gods had mercy on the black-headed people (And) gave a king to the people of the land of Kiš, [The king planted a palm in his palace,] And grew a tamarisk nearby. In the shade of the tamari[sk banquets were laid out,] (…) (10) In the shade of the palm [the drum] res[ounded]. (…) Both trees were enemies, and would constantly vie with each other.
In the poem, they both seek to establish their superiority by describing their utility to and the commodities that they provide humans. Palm cites the inability of Tamarisk to produce fruit, whereas it produces fruits served to royalty. Tamarisk by contrast cites its high-quality wood which is used to build divine statues. Provoked further, Tamarisk proceeds to list many appliances found in palaces that are made of its wood. Tamarisk argues [10] :
Tamarisk answered and spake unto Palm, / "Consider what is yours among the palace equipment! / "On my table the king eats, / "And from my basket, the warriors eat. / "[I am a we]aver—I warp the threads, / I clothe the troops and brighten [the king]. / "I am an exorcist—I purify the temple, / "[I am truly superior]—I have no rival!"
Palm cites the ignoble use of Tamarisk by beer brewers; Tamarisk counters with its use by smiths and then cites the ignoble use of Palm by butchers. The back-and-forths continue, as Palm rebuts by mentioning that the woodworkers who fashion wood from Tamarisk rely on Palm for shade, but Tamarisk begins to describe its agricultural utility. Palm is infuriated by this argument: Palm lists the abundant manner of uses that rope fashioned from it is put to work by farmers. The last speech by Tamarisk and Palm is too fragmentary to reconstruct, and after that, the remaining text breaks off. The winner of the dispute is not recorded by extant manuscripts. One suggestion holds that Palm may have won because in later Babylonian literature, it receives the epithet šar iṣṣī, "king of the trees". [11]
The first critical edition and translation of the text was published by Wilfred Lambert in 1996. [12] Lambert knew the work from three recensions (versions): one from Old Babylonian manuscripts discovered from Šaduppûm (Tell Harmal), a second from Middle Assyrian tablets, and a third (and lowest quality) manuscript that dates one or two centuries after the Middle Assyrian period. [13] In addition, another manuscript from Emar was published and edited in 1989, but as it is not accessible to researchers, a new edition after Lambert's has not been produced. [14]
Although manuscripts of the text are not known from the 1st millennium BC, it may have been mentioned in a catalogue of texts from Kuyunjik. [15]
In 2019, the Iraqi-American artist Michael Rakowitz put together an exhibition at the Green Art Gallery in Los Angeles titled Dispute Between the Tamarisk and the Date Palm, in inspiration by the Akkadian disputation. The duration of the exhibition was from March 9 – September 1, 2019. [16]
Akkadian literature is the ancient literature written in the East Semitic Akkadian language in Mesopotamia during the period spanning the Middle Bronze Age to the Iron Age.
Nergal was a Mesopotamian god worshiped through all periods of Mesopotamian history, from Early Dynastic to Neo-Babylonian times, with a few attestations indicating that his cult survived into the period of Achaemenid domination. He was primarily associated with war, death, and disease, and has been described as the "god of inflicted death". He reigned over Kur, the Mesopotamian underworld, depending on the myth either on behalf of his parents Enlil and Ninlil, or in later periods as a result of his marriage with the goddess Ereshkigal. Originally either Mammitum, a goddess possibly connected to frost, or Laṣ, sometimes assumed to be a minor medicine goddess, were regarded as his wife, though other traditions existed, too.
Ziusudra of Shuruppak is listed in the WB-62 Sumerian King List recension as the last king of Sumer prior to the Great Flood. He is subsequently recorded as the hero of the Eridu Genesis and appears in the writings of Berossus as Xisuthros.
Disputation is a genre of literature involving two contenders who seek to establish a resolution to a problem or establish the superiority of something. An example of the latter is in Sumerian disputation poems.
Enkimdu (𒀭𒂗𒆠𒅎𒁺) was a Mesopotamian god associated with agriculture and irrigation. He is best known from the poem Dumuzi and Enkimdu, but in laments he was instead connected with the god Martu, who like Dumuzi could be described and depicted as a shepherd.
Nisaba was the Mesopotamian goddess of writing and grain. She is one of the oldest Sumerian deities attested in writing, and remained prominent through many periods of Mesopotamian history. She was commonly worshiped by scribes, and numerous Sumerian texts end with the doxology "praise to Nisaba" as a result. She declined after the Old Babylonian period due to the rise of the new scribe god, Nabu, though she did not fully vanish from Mesopotamian religion and attestations from as late as the neo-Babylonian period are known.
Enmesharra was a Mesopotamian god associated with the underworld. He was regarded as a member of an inactive old generation of deities, and as such was commonly described as a ghost or resident of the underworld. He is best known from various lists of primordial deities, such as the so-called "theogony of Enlil," which lists many generations of ancestral deities.
Tishpak (Tišpak) was a Mesopotamian god associated with the ancient city Eshnunna and its sphere of influence, located in the Diyala area of Iraq. He was primarily a war deity, but he was also associated with snakes, including the mythical mushussu and bashmu, and with kingship.
Sumerian literature constitutes the earliest known corpus of recorded literature, including the religious writings and other traditional stories maintained by the Sumerian civilization and largely preserved by the later Akkadian and Babylonian empires. These records were written in the Sumerian language in the 3rd and 2nd millennia BC during the Middle Bronze Age.
Alalu or Alala was a primordial figure in Mesopotamian and Hurrian mythology. He is also known from documents from Emar, where he was known as Alal. While his role was not identical in these three contexts, it is agreed that all three versions share the same origin. Hurrian Alalu, who plays the role of the oldest king of gods in the Kumarbi Cycle, is the best known, and is commonly discussed in scholarship focused on comparative mythology but it is agreed Mesopotamian Alala represents the oldest tradition regarding this being. However, the precise etymology of his name is unknown, and likely neither Sumerian nor Semitic. Both Hurrian and Mesopotamian sources attest an association between him and Anu, but its nature varies between cultures.
The Sumerian disputation poem or Sumerian debate is a genre of Sumerian literature in the form of a disputation. Extant compositions from this genre date to the middle-to-late 3rd millennium BC. There are six primary poems belonging to this genre. The genre of Sumerian disputations also differs from Aesopic disputations as the former contain only dialogue without narration. In their own language, the texts are described as adamin in the doxologies at the end of the poem, which literally means "contests (between) two".
Gilgamesh, Enkidu, and the Netherworld is one of five extant compositions of the Sumerian language about the deeds of the hero Gilgamesh. It was known to the ancients by its incipit, ud ri-a ud sud-rá ri-a or "In those days, in those faraway days". It spans 330 lines.
Bazi was a legendary king of Mari. He is mentioned in the recension of the Sumerian King List from Tell Leilan and in a version of the Ballad of Early Rulers known from Emar. The former of these two texts indicates he was deified. The god Bazi known only from the Old Babylonian Song of Bazi is presumed to be the same figure.
The "Series of the Poplar" is an Akkadian disputation poem containing a discussion between a Poplar, an Ash, and probably other trees, who each tries to establish his preeminence in the vegetal kingdom by listing their many uses and excellent qualities. Most of the surviving examples of the work are from the library of King Assurbanipal of Nineveh, "one of the most important repositories of texts from the entire ancient world".
The Series of Ox and Horse is an Akkadian disputation poem. It contains a poetic dispute between an ox and a horse and perhaps other animals. Around 200 mostly fragmentary verses are known, but it is uncertain how long the text originally was, or in which order the preserved fragments should be arranged.
Palm and Vine is an Akkadian disputation poem. It contains a disputation poem between two litigants, Palm and Vine, each of which praises its own merits and many uses, and discredits those of its rival. The text may have been composed in the second-millennium BCE, but only first-millennium manuscripts of it are known. Fifty-four lines from the middle section of the text are preserved, which begin in medias res with a long speech of Palm, immediately followed by Vine's rejoinder. Three library manuscripts of the poem are known, as well as an excerpt on a peculiar school tablet.
The Debate between tree and reed is a work of Sumerian literature belonging to the genre of disputations poem. It was written on clay tablets and dates to the Third Dynasty of Ur. The text was reconstructed by M. Civil in the 1960s from 24 manuscripts but it is currently the least studied of the disputation poems and a full translation has not yet been published. Some other Sumerian disputations include the dispute between bird and fish, cattle and grain, and Summer and Winter.

It was written on clay tablets and dates to the Third Dynasty of Ur and runs 196 lines in length. The text was reconstructed by M. Civil in the 1960s. The two protagonists, as in other disputation poems, are two inarticulate things: in this case, two pieces of agricultural equipment, the hoe and the plough. The debate is about which is the better tool.

They feature a dialogue or a debate involving two contenders, usually cast as inarticulate beings such as particular objects, plants, animals, and so forth. Extant compositions from this genre date from the early 2nd millennium BC, the earliest example being the Tamarisk and Palm, to the late 1st millennium BC. These poems occur in verse and follow a type of meter called 2||2 or Vierheber, which is the same meter found in some other Akkadian texts like the Enuma Elish.
