Tania Miller

Tania Miller (born August 28, 1969, in Foam Lake, Saskatchewan) [1] is a Canadian conductor.

In October 2023, she was appointed Artistic Director and Conductor of Brott Music Festival and its two national Canadian training programs, the National Academy Orchestra of Canada and BrottOpera. [2] [3] She is currently Music Director Emerita of the Victoria Symphony following her retirement as music director, a post she had held since 2003. Prior to that, she was Assistant Conductor (2000–03) and then Associate Conductor (2003–04) of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. [4] At the time of her appointment to the Victoria Symphony, Miller was 33 years old, and was the youngest conductor of a major Canadian orchestra. [5] She was also the first woman appointed to lead such an orchestra. [6] She was named Interim Principal Conductor of the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra, following the death of music director Bramwell Tovey, in 2022. [7]

Previous positions she has held include conductor and artistic director of Michigan Opera Works (Ann Arbor), conductor of Opera McGill (Montréal), conductor of the ERGO contemporary chamber ensemble, and assistant conductor of the Carmel Bach Festival (Carmel), 1997–2001. She has also made appearances conducting the National Arts Centre Orchestra (Ottawa), Orchestre Métropolitain, Toronto Symphony, Orchestra London, CBC Radio Orchestra, Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, Winnipeg Symphony, Edmonton Symphony, Calgary Philharmonic, Seattle Symphony, Oregon Symphony, Tucson Symphony, Naples Symphony, Toledo Symphony, Elgin Symphony, Hartford Symphony, Bern Symphony Orchestra and Vermont Symphony Orchestra. Miller grew up in Saskatchewan, where she began studying piano and organ at age 8. She became the organist and choir conductor at her church when she was 13. [1] She received her bachelor's degree in music from the University of Saskatchewan in 1991, and received both her masters (1997) and doctoral (2000) degrees in conducting from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. She lives in Vancouver with her husband and two sons. [9]

Boris Brott, was a Canadian conductor and motivational speaker. He was one of the most internationally recognized Canadian conductors, having conducted on stages around the world, including Carnegie Hall, La Scala,and Covent Garden. He was known for his innovative methods of introducing classical music to new audiences. Over his career, he commissioned, performed, and recorded a wide variety of Canadian works for orchestra.

The Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra (HPO) is a Canadian orchestra based in Hamilton, Ontario. The orchestra gives concerts primarily at the FirstOntario Concert Hall.

The Victoria Symphony is a Canadian orchestra based in Victoria, British Columbia. It is considered Vancouver Island's largest and best-known performing arts organization. Currently conducted by Danish conductor Christian Kluxen, the orchestra consists of 34 full-contract, and 15 part-contract musicians. Typically, the orchestra delivers more than fifty main series programs per season, as well as a two-week-long summer series. The National Academy Orchestra of Canada (NAO) is a professional training orchestra primarily based in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Founded in 1989 by late conductor Boris Brott, it is currently helmed by Artistic Director and Conductor Tania Miller. The NAO is recognized as a Canadian National School for professional training. Each year, hundreds of Canadian musicians audition for a spot in the orchestra.

Brott Music Festival, presents annual classical, opera, jazz, pops, and children's education concerts in Hamilton, Halton and Niagara regions in Ontario, Canada as well as touring to other music festivals in southern Ontario. The festival was founded by late conductor Boris Brott and has grown into Ontario's only and Canada's largest orchestral music festival. Operating under the umbrella of the Brott Music Festival, it showcases staged opera performances and opera recitals annually in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
