Belarus, officially the Republic of Belarus, is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe. It is bordered by Russia to the east and northeast, Ukraine to the south, Poland to the west, and Lithuania and Latvia to the northwest. Covering an area of 207,600 square kilometres (80,200 sq mi) and with a population of 9.1 million, Belarus is the 13th-largest and the 20th-most populous country in Europe. The country has a hemiboreal climate and is administratively divided into six regions. Minsk is the capital and largest city; it is administered separately as a city with special status.
Tatyana Romanovna Lebedeva is a Russian track and field athlete who competes in both the long jump and triple jump events. She is one of the most successful athletes in the disciplines, having won gold medals at Olympic, world and European levels. She has a long jump best of 7.33 m and held the then indoor world record mark of 15.36 m in the triple jump. In 2017 she was banned for doping.
Aleksandr Vasilyevich Medved is a Ukrainian-born Soviet Belarusian retired freestyle wrestler of Russian ethnicity who competed for the Soviet Union and was named "one of the greatest wrestlers in history" by FILA, the sport's governing body. Between 1962 and 1972 he won three Olympic gold medals, seven world and three European titles. He served as the Olympic flag bearer for the Soviet Union in 1972, for Belarus in 2004 and recited the Judge's Oath at the Opening Ceremony of the 1980 Olympics.
The National Olympic Committee of the Republic of Belarus is one of many national Olympic committees that make up the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Created in 1991, the NOC RB, was charged with selecting athletes to represent Belarus in the Summer and Winter Olympic Games, enforcing anti-doping laws and promoting sporting activity inside Belarus. The current president of the NOC RB is Victor Lukashenko, the son of the current President of Belarus.
Athletics at the 2008 Summer Olympics were held during the last ten days of the games, from August 15 to August 24, 2008, at the Beijing National Stadium. The Olympic sport of athletics is split into four distinct sets of events: track and field events, road running events, and racewalking events.
Darya Uladzimirauna Domracheva is a retired Belarusian biathlete and coach who competed in the Biathlon World Cup from 2006 to 2018. She won a gold medal in the 4×6 km relay and a silver medal in the mass start competition at the 2018 Winter Olympics, three gold medals in the pursuit, individual, and mass start competitions at the 2014 Winter Olympics, and a bronze medal in the individual competition at the 2010 Winter Olympics. She was a Biathlon World Cup overall winner for the 2014–15 season.
Tatyana Vasilyevna Ananko is a Belarusian rhythmic gymnast. She won a silver medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics in the group all-around competition. Ananko was born in Minsk, Belarus.
Tatsiana Fedarovich is a Belarusian sprint canoer who competed in the late 2000s. At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, she was eliminated in the heats of the K-1 500 m event.
Marina Nikolayevna Znak-Sinelshchikova is a Belarusian rower, who won a bronze medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics while representing Belarus. Before 1991, she competed internationally for the Soviet Union, winning two golds and a silver medal for the Soviets at the World Rowing Championships from 1985 to 1991. While appearing at the World Rowing Championships for Belarus from 1995 to 1999, she won a further two gold medals and a bronze.
The women's 1500 metres competition was an event at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, United Kingdom. The competition was held at the Olympic Stadium from 6–10 August. The top two finishers were later found to have used prohibited drugs during this period, and subsequently disqualified. The current silver medalist, Tatyana Tomashova, had served a two-year doping ban (2008–2010) for manipulating samples and was banned after the Olympics for failing another drug test; and the 7th-place finisher Natallia Kareiva and the 9th-place finisher Yekaterina Kostetskaya were later disqualified after being found guilty of doping.
Taccjana Michajlaŭna Ivínskaja is a Belarusian former basketball player who competed in the 1980 Summer Olympics.
Elena Vladimirovna Volchetskaya is a Soviet and Belarusian retired artistic gymnast. She competed at the 1964 Summer Olympics in all artistic gymnastics events and won a gold medal in the team all around competition. Individually her best results were fifth place in the vault and eighth all around.
Belarus participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2014 in Marsa, Malta. The Belarusian entry was selected through a national final, organised by Belarusian broadcaster National State Television and Radio Company of the Republic of Belarus (BTRC). The final was held on 29 August 2014. Nadezhda Misyakova and her song "Sokol" won the national final, scoring 15 points.
Tatyana Kurochkina is a Belarusian former 400m hurdler. She represented the Soviet Union at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, where she finished seventh in the final in a lifetime best of 54.39 secs. She went on to represent Belarus at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
Tatsiana Mikhailava also known as Tatyana Mikhailova is a Belarusian speed skater. She competed in the women's mass start event during the 2018 Winter Olympics.
Tatyana Narelik is a Belarusian rower. She competed in the women's quadruple sculls at the 2004 Summer Olympics.
Tatyana Zharganova is a Belarusian gymnast. She competed at the 1996 Summer Olympics and the 2000 Summer Olympics.
Tatyana Grigorenko is a Belarusian gymnast. She competed at the 2000 Summer Olympics.
Tatsiana Piatrenia is a Belarusian trampoline gymnast, who has competed at four Olympic Games, with a best finish of fifth. She won the individual events at the 2017 Trampoline Gymnastics World Championships and the 2012 European Trampoline Championships.
On 1 August 2021, it was reported that Belarusian sprinter Krystsina Tsimanouskaya was in the process of being repatriated to Belarus from Tokyo, Japan, against her will, and had been removed from competing at the 2020 Summer Olympics, for posting a video on social media that was critical of her coaches.
