The taxicabs of Mexico are a common form of transportation in most cities of the country. Taxicabs in Mexico tend to have very low fares compared to that in more economically developed countries.
There are more than 140,000 taxicabs in Mexico City, [2] making it one of the largest taxicab fleets in the world.
Modern taxicabs in the country had their origin in 1970 when the government took measures to give Mexico City an affordable taxi transport. Instead of the big cars used through the '50s and '60s, the Volkswagen Sedán (Beetle type 1) was the car selected to serve as taxicabs. They were colored with yellow panels and white roofs. During the late '70s, however, other automobiles started to run as taxis, such as the Nissan Tsuru and the Datsun 160J.
Sometime in the early '90s, government decided to change taxi and other public transport such as Peseros panel color to green, in order to give an impression of "eco transport", and the VWs started to be called "taxis ecológicos" (ecological taxis). Soon, very few yellow taxis were running by the city although it is still possible to see some of them occasionally - and a yellow color scheme is used by a private airport taxicab company "Yellow Cab" and another called "Sitio-300".
In 2003, the government decided to change the colors again - to a full white colored car with a red stripe on both sides of the panels. At the same time, the old 2-door VWs were retired and replaced with 4-door saloons or subcompacts such as the Nissan Platina, Hyundai Atos the most populous taxicab choice the Nissan Tsuru(1991-2017).
The colors changed again in 2008 this time to maroon with golden rooftops and a row of the city symbol, the Angel of Independence. in 2014 color changed again to Mexican pink and white by this time all the Volkswagen beetle taxis were not in service
However, there are no more Volkswagen beetle taxis anymore as the government does not allow for a taxicab to run after 8 years
In Mexico City, according to Mexican legislation introduced in 2001, public taxicabs (in contrast with private taxicabs, or 'taxis de sitio') must be 4-door red cars, with a white roof. Before 2001 most taxicabs were green Volkswagen Beetles with a white roof. They had the front-right seat removed in order to ease entry for passengers. Originally they were yellow with white roof, until they were changed in mid-90s (allegedly because of yellow color being the official color of the Partido de la Revolución Democrática who at the time was competing for the newly created position of Head of Government of the Federal District with the Partido Revolucionario Institucional which is mostly identified with the green. Officially it was to identify green taxicabs as environmentally-friendly 'ecológicos', but they are exactly the same polluting Volkswagen Beetles. As in most of the world a special license must be obtained in order to run a taxicab.
However, due to the increasing demand for public taxicabs, and the difficulties and cost of obtaining such license, there are many illegal 'pirata' taxis. These look like common taxis, but lack the legal and regulatory requirements to carry fare-paying passengers. Pirata taxis pose a higher security risk for passengers due to the lack of background checks for drivers, and can be distinguished because they carry a regular private vehicle licence plate (which is brown in the format XXX-YYY where X a number and Y a letter) or have a number drawn or printed in place of a licence plate instead of a taxicab licence plate (which is in the format LXXXXXX where X is a number). These pirate taxis are common throughout the city due to government's failure to enforce the regulations. Indeed, sanctions have been threatened by the trade unions, and others, should there be any clampdown on the illegal taxis. [3] [4] [5]

Matchbox launched in 2004 a 1:64 scale model of the Volkswagen sedan taxi, released as "Beetle taxi".
The Volkswagen Santana is a nameplate used by Volkswagen for various sedans and station wagons since 1983. The first generation is based on the second-generation Volkswagen Passat (B2). It was introduced in 1981 while production started in 1983 for China. The use of the "Santana" badge rather than "Passat" echoes the use of different names for the sedan versions of the Polo (Derby) and Golf (Jetta).
In the automotive industry, rebadging is a form of market segmentation used by automobile manufacturers around the world. To allow for product differentiation without designing or engineering a new model or brand, a manufacturer creates a distinct automobile by applying a new "badge" or trademark to an existing product line.
The Nissan Sunny is an automobile built by the Japanese automaker Nissan from 1966 till 2004. In the early 1980s, the brand changed from Datsun to Nissan in line with other models by the company. Although production of the Sunny in Japan ended in 2004, the name remains in use in China and GCC countries for a rebadged version of the Nissan Almera.
Checker Motors Corporation was a Kalamazoo, Michigan, vehicle manufacturer and tier-one subcontractor that manufactured taxicabs used by Checker Taxi. Morris Markin established the company in 1922, initially named the Checker Cab Manufacturing Company, in Chicago through a merger of Commonwealth Motors and Markin Automobile Body. The manufacturer moved to Kalamazoo in 1923 and was renamed to Checker Motors in 1958.
The Nissan Sentra is a series of automobiles manufactured by the Japanese automaker Nissan since 1982. Since 1999, the Sentra has been categorized as a compact car, while previously it occupied the subcompact class. Until 2006, Sentra was a rebadged export version of the Japanese Nissan Sunny, but since the 2013 model year, Sentra is a rebadged export version of the Sylphy. The Sentra nameplate is not used in Japan. Many other countries in Latin America sell their versions of the Sunny as the Sentra. In Mexico, the first three generations of the Sentra were known as the Nissan Tsuru, and the B13 model was sold under that name until 2017, alongside the updated models badged as Sentra.

Hong Kong taxicabs are the principal taxi service in Hong Kong. Although a few taxis are independently owned and operated, the vast majority are owned by 17 independent taxi companies that rent out taxis on a shift basis to 40,000 self-employed drivers.
In New York City, taxicabs come in two varieties: yellow and green; they are widely recognizable symbols of the city. Taxis painted yellow are able to pick up passengers anywhere in the five boroughs. The Ford Maverick is a compact car manufactured and marketed by Ford for model years 1970–1977 in the United States, originally as a two-door sedan employing a rear-wheel drive platform original to the 1960 Falcon — and subsequently as a four-door sedan on the same platform. The Maverick replaced the Falcon in most of the world, but Australia kept selling and developing the Falcon.
Taxicabs of the Philippines are one of the modes of transportation in the country. They are regulated by the Department of Transportation (DOTr), the Land Transportation Office (LTO), and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB). The taxicabs there vary from models and uses. Most taxicabs have yellow colored license plates, taxi signs, LTFRB Registration number, and taximeter, which is mandatory in every cab.
The Volkswagen Beetle was introduced to Mexico in March 1954, inside the exhibition "Alemania y su Industria". Four different Volkswagen vehicles were brought to Mexico through Veracruz City for the first time. Those vehicles were: two Sedans 113 in "Export" trim, a convertible, and a VW Bus in luxury trim. Officially, the Bug/Beetle was named "Type I sedan" and the Bus was named "Type II station wagon", though variants included single and double cab pickups.
Taxicabs of Venezuela is a form of public transport in Venezuela. At difference with most taxicab services in the world, in Venezuela there is not taximeter, nor any other form of measure the fare. The way it is measure is by a 'Carrera' which varies between driver. Due to this way of charging, it is a custom to ask and often negotiate the fare before getting inside the taxicab.
Checker Taxi was a dominant taxicab company and national franchisor that was based in Chicago, Illinois. Checker Motors was an American vehicle manufacturer based in Kalamazoo, Michigan that built the iconic Checker Taxicab, sold commercially as the Checker Marathon until 1982. Both companies were owned by Morris Markin by the 1930s.
Taxi livery varies greatly from country to country. In some countries, livery is determined by Government legislation, in other countries, taxi operators have choice on colours.
The São Paulo International Motor Show is the biggest and most important automotive event in Latin America. The São Paulo International Motor Show has been held in São Paulo, Brazil since 1960. Originally being held irregularly, it has been a biannual show since 1984. In 1990 the event became internationalized and the domestic industry showed its capacity for global competition.
