Taylor Elgersma (born March 27, 2002) [1] [2] is a Canadian football quarterback for the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks. He won the Hec Crighton Trophy in 2024 as U Sports football's most outstanding player.
Elgersma was born and raised in London, Ontario and attended Oakridge Secondary School where he played high school football. [3] [4] He also played ice hockey for the London Jr Knights from 2016 to 2019. [1] [2]
Elgersma first committed to playing U Sports football for the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks in 2020, but did not play that year due to the cancelled 2020 season. [4] In 2021, he served as the backup quarterback where he played in five games and completed 24 of 38 passes for 355 yards and one passing touchdown. [3] [4] The Golden Hawks finished with a 3–3 record in a shortened season where they had a first-round playoff loss to the Guelph Gryphons.
Elgersma became the starting quarterback in 2022 where he played in eight regular season games and two post-season games where he completed 178 out of 270 pass attempts for 2,141 yards with 15 touchdown passes and nine interceptions. [3] The Golden Hawks finished in fourth place in the OUA and hosted a quarter-final playoff game where he won his first playoff start in the game against the Carleton Ravens, completing 21 of 28 passes for 303 yards and two touchdowns. [3] In the semi-final against the Western Mustangs, Elgersma struggled as he completed just eight of 17 pass attempts for 52 yards and one interception as the Golden Hawks lost 45–9. [3]
In the 2023 season, Elgersma led the country in passing yards and completions as he recorded 206 completions out of 274 pass attempts for 2,641 yards with 18 touchdown passes and four interceptions in eight regular season games. [5] The Golden Hawks finished in second place in the OUA with a 7–1 record and Elgersma led the team to playoff victories over the Waterloo Warriors and Windsor Lancers to qualify for the program's first Yates Cup game since 2016. [3] In the 2023 Yates Cup, Elgersma completed 27 of 43 pass attempts for 242 yards with one touchdown pass and two picks as Laurier had their season ended by Western for the second consecutive season. [3] At the end-of-season awards night, Elgersma was named a U Sports Second Team All-Canadian at quarterback. [6]
In 2024, Elgersma played in all eight regular season games where he completed 178 of 239 pass attempts (74.5% completion rate) for 2,643 yards with 20 touchdowns and nine interceptions. [7] He led the Golden Hawks to an 8–0 record where the team finished in first place in the OUA for the first time since 2005. [8] In the Yates Cup, Elgersma completed 18 of 30 passes for 306 yards and four touchdown passes as he was named the game's MVP in the championship win over the Western Mustangs. [9] In the following week, in the Uteck Bowl, he set a bowl game record for most passing yards in a game with 452 yards while throwing five touchdown passes in the victory over the Bishop's Gaiters. [10] Elgersma was named the Uteck Bowl's offensive player of the game as the Golden Hawks qualified for their first Vanier Cup game since 2005. [10] In the 59th Vanier Cup game, Elgersma completed 23 of 34 pass attempts for 246 yards and two touchdowns, but the Golden Hawks suffered their first loss of the season to the Laval Rouge et Or by a score of 22–17. At the end of the season, Elgersma was named the OUA MVP and won the Hec Crighton Trophy as the most outstanding player in U Sports football. [12] [13] He was also named a U Sports First Team All-Canadian. [13]
After completing his fourth year of playing eligibility, with one year remaining, Elgersma qualified to be selected in the 2024 CFL draft. [14] In the winter edition of the CFL Scouting Bureau rankings for players eligible in the that draft, he was ranked as the 20th-best player available and the ninth-best U Sports player available. [14] Elgersma also accepted an invitation to play in the 2025 Senior Bowl, becoming the second U Sports player to ever be invited to play in the game. [15] [16]
The Vanier Cup is a post season university football championship game, used to determine the national champion in U Sports football. The game is the final for the winners of the Uteck Bowl and the Mitchell Bowl. In turn, the participating teams are determined by the winners of 4 bowl games: the Loney Bowl (AUS), Hardy Cup, Dunsmore Cup (RSEQ), and Yates Cup (OUA).
Greg Marshall is a former Canadian football running back and current head coach for the University of Western Ontario's football team, the Western Mustangs. Marshall was the head coach with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League (CFL) from 2004 to 2006. Prior to his time with the Tiger-Cats, Marshall was the head coach of McMaster University's football team. He is the brother of Blake Marshall.
Erik Glavic is a former Canadian football quarterback who played CIS football for both the Calgary Dinos and the Saint Mary's Huskies. Glavic is the only CIS football player to have won the Hec Crighton Trophy with two different teams. His brother Sasha Glavic is a former defensive back for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League.
The 2009 CIS football season began on August 29, 2009, and concluded its campaign with the 45th Vanier Cup national championship on November 28 at PEPS stadium in Quebec City, Quebec. Twenty-seven universities across Canada compete in CIS football, the highest level of amateur play in Canadian football, under the auspices of Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS). The Queen's Golden Gaels defeated the Calgary Dinos 33-31 in the Vanier Cup to claim the 2009 national championship and their fourth in school history.

The 44th Vanier Cup was played on November 22, 2008, at Ivor Wynne Stadium in Hamilton, Ontario, and decided the CIS Football champion for the 2008 season. The Laval Rouge et Or dominated the Western Mustangs to win the championship 44-21, en route to a perfect 12-0 season. The win gave Laval its fifth Vanier Cup in school history and its fourth in the last six years.
The McMaster Marauders football team represents McMaster University based in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. The team plays U Sports football in the Ontario University Athletics conference. The Marauders have been playing organized football since 1901 when they played their first exhibition game in the Canadian Intercollegiate Rugby Football Union. As a player, he is a two-time All-Canadian and two-time winner of the Hec Crighton Trophy in 2002 and 2003. The Windsor Lancers football team represents the University of Windsor in Windsor, Ontario in the sport of Canadian football in the Ontario University Athletics conference of U Sports. The Windsor Lancers football team has been in continuous operation since 1968. The team won its only Yates Cup conference championship in 1975 as winners of the OQIFC West Division. The program is one of six currently in U Sports football that have not appeared in a Vanier Cup game. The Lancers have had three Hec Crighton Trophy winners, with Andrew Parici in 1972, Scott Mallender, in 1979, and Daryl Stephenson in 2006.

The Gaels compete at the U Sports football level, within the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) conference. Queen's began competing in intercollegiate football in 1882. The Gaels play in the Richardson Memorial Stadium in Kingston, which has a capacity of 8,000.
The Waterloo Warriors football team represents the University of Waterloo in the sport of Canadian football in U Sports. The Warriors U Sports football program has been in operation since 1957, winning two Yates Cup conference championships in 1997 and 1999. Currently, they are one of six teams to have never appeared in a Vanier Cup game and the longest tenured program in the OUA to have never qualified for the national championship game.
The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks football team represents Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario in the sport of Canadian football in the Ontario University Athletics conference of U Sports. The Golden Hawks football team has been in continuous operation since 1961 and has been playing U Sports football in every year since 1962. The team has appeared in five Vanier Cup championships, losing in 1966, 1968 and 1972, and winning the national title in 1991 and 2005. The team has also won nine Yates Cup conference championships, most recently in 2024. The Golden Hawks have had two Hec Crighton Trophy winners, Bill Kubas in 1994 and Taylor Elgersma in 2024.

Tre Ford is a Canadian professional football quarterback for the Edmonton Elks of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He was named a Hec Crighton Trophy winner in 2021 as U Sports football's most outstanding player and won the Lois and Doug Mitchell Award as U Sports top male university athlete.
The 2023 U Sports football season began on August 25, 2023, with the defending champion Laval Rouge et Or visiting the Sherbrooke Vert et Or. On the following day, ten Ontario University Athletics teams, four Atlantic University Sport teams, and two RSEQ opened their schedules on August 26, 2023. On the following weekend, the six Canada West teams opened their seasons on September 1, 2023.
The 2024 U Sports football season began on August 23, 2024, with the defending champion Montreal Carabins hosting the Sherbrooke Vert et Or. On the following day, four Atlantic University Sport teams and six Ontario University Athletics teams opened their schedules on August 24, 2024. The Canada West conference began their season one week later on August 30.
