Team Origin was Great Britain's bid to compete in the 33rd and 34th America's Cups. It was launched in January 2007 [1] but stopped running the racing team in 2010. The syndicate was founded by Sir Keith Mills, also known for being the deputy chairman for the organizing committee of the London 2012 Olympic bid. Grant Simmer was the CEO and the team competed under the burgee of the Royal Thames Yacht Club.

2010 Americas Cup

The 33rd America's Cup between Société Nautique de Genève defending with team Alinghi against Golden Gate Yacht Club, and their racing team BMW Oracle Racing was the subject of extensive court action and litigation, surpassing in acrimony even the controversial 1988 America's Cup. Since the two parties were unable to agree otherwise, the match took place as a one-on-one deed of gift match in gigantic, specialized multi-hull racing yachts with no other clubs or teams participating. The Golden Gate Yacht Club won the match 2–0 as their yacht USA 17 powered by a rigid wing-sail proved to be significantly faster than Société Nautique de Genève's yacht Alinghi 5. The litigation leading up to the match included which club would be the challenger, the dates and venue for the regattas, certain rules governing the regattas, and the construction of the boats.

2013 Americas Cup series of boat races held on San Francisco Bay

The 34th America's Cup was a series of yacht races held on San Francisco Bay, in September 2013. The series was contested between the defender Oracle Team USA representing the Golden Gate Yacht Club, and the challenger Emirates Team New Zealand representing the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. Oracle Team USA defended the America's Cup by a score of 9 to 8, after winning eight consecutive races from Race 11 onwards. Team New Zealand won the right to challenge for the cup by winning the 2013 Louis Vuitton Cup. The 34th America's Cup's race sequence was the longest ever, by both number of days and races, and the first since the 25th America's Cup to feature both teams in a match point situation.

Americas Cup yachting race

The America's Cup, affectionately known as the Auld Mug, is a trophy awarded to the winner of the America's Cup match races between two sailing yachts. One yacht, known as the defender, represents the yacht club that currently holds the America's Cup and the second yacht, known as the challenger, represents the yacht club that is challenging for the cup. The timing of each match is determined by an agreement between the defender and the challenger. The America's Cup is the oldest international sporting trophy. It will next be raced for in the southern summer, in the early part of 2021.

2017 Americas Cup

The 2017 America's Cup was the 35th staging of the America's Cup yacht race. The challenger, Emirates Team New Zealand, won by a score of 7 to 1 over the defender, Oracle Team USA. It was held on the Great Sound in Bermuda from June 17 to June 26. The races were conducted using hydrofoiling AC50 America's Cup Class yachts, which are slightly larger than the AC45F yachts used in the 2015–16 America's Cup World Series.

History

Sir Keith Mills initially announced his intention to create a team to challenge for the Americas' Cup on 4 January 2007, and announced the decision to appoint Mike Sanderson as Team Director on 29 March 2007. In May of the same year, Team Origin announced it was becoming a partner of the RYA Onboard scheme, which has over 60 centres across the UK. Sanderson commented at the time that he hoped to "raise awareness and participation of the sport.

Mike Sanderson is a New Zealand sailor. Perhaps best known for being awarded the prestigious ISAF World Sailor of the Year Award for winning the 2005–06 Volvo Ocean Race as skipper of ABN Amro I. At 35 years old, he became the youngest skipper to ever win a Volvo Ocean Race in the 2005–2006 edition of the race..

Less than a month later, it was announced that Team Origin would be partnering the Royal Thames Yacht Club (of which Sir Keith Mills is a member), because of its balance between old and new, tradition and technology, and also its central location in Knightsbridge, London.[ citation needed ]

After its acquisition of SUI-75 in May 2007, an almost identical boat to SUI-64, which was used by the Swiss to win the 31st Americas' Cup match, all that was missing was the crew, the majority of which were announced in September 2007.

In December 2007 the team announced its intention to scale-back activities in anticipation of legal wrangling causing significant delays to the 33rd Cup's schedule, anticipating that 2009's cup would be delayed by at least 2 years.

Team Origin competed in the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series in 2009 and were a participant of the Louis Vuitton Trophy. In May 2010 Team Origin appointed Grant Simmer as the team's new CEO, replacing Mike Sanderson. [3]

The trophy for the overall 1851 event was The Trafalgar Cup for the match racing series which was won by Team Origin.

In 2010 Ben Ainslie and Team Origin won a Tour Card for the World Match Racing Tour, and despite only entering six of the nine events they won in Sweden, Bermuda and the Monsoon Cup in Malaysia and were crowned ISAF Match Racing World Champions 2010.

In October, it was announced that Mills had scrapped plans to campaign for the 2013 America's Cup, which came as shock to the team. The decision was based on the rule changes for the America's Cup to the boat specifications that meant the team had no chance of winning. [4]

In January 2012, Ben Ainslie announced the foundation of a new team to complete in the 2017 America's Cup, called Ben Ainslie Racing (BAR). [2]

Team Origin Events is still involved in running the America's Cup World Series. [5]
